When Should You Get a CT Coronary Angiography? Signs & Symptoms to Know at Butler. (08) 9544 3999
CT coronary angiography is a specialised imaging test that uses advanced CT scanning technology and contrast dye to create detailed images of the coronary arteries—the blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to your heart. Unlike traditional angiography, which involves inserting a catheter into the arteries, CT coronary angiography is non-invasive, faster, and usually more comfortable for patients. During the scan: • A small amount of contrast dye is injected into a vein. • A CT scanner captures high-resolution images of the heart and arteries. • Doctors analyse the images to detect plaque buildup, narrowing, or blockages. If your doctor recommends further investigation of your heart health, you may be advised to Get CT coronary angiography scan at Butler Medical Imaging, where modern imaging technology helps provide accurate and timely results.
Why Doctors Recommend CT Coronary Angiography CT coronary angiography is commonly used to assess suspected coronary artery disease or to evaluate unexplained cardiac symptoms. The scan allows doctors to identify problems early— often before a heart attack occurs. Your doctor may recommend this test if you have: • Unexplained chest pain • Abnormal stress test results • Risk factors for heart disease
• Family history of cardiovascular problems • Symptoms suggesting restricted blood flow to the heart Many patients choose to Get CT coronary angiography scan at Butler Medical Imaging because it offers precise imaging, expert radiology interpretation, and a patient-friendly scanning environment. Early detection allows doctors to recommend treatments such as lifestyle changes, medication, or further cardiac care before complications develop.
Signs and Symptoms That May Indicate You Need the Scan Certain warning signs may suggest that the coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked. If you experience any of the following symptoms, your doctor may recommend coronary imaging. 1. Chest Pain or Angina Chest discomfort is one of the most common symptoms of coronary artery disease. It may feel like: • Pressure or tightness in the chest • Burning or heaviness • Pain during exercise or stress CT coronary angiography can help determine whether this pain is related to blocked heart arteries. 2. Shortness of Breath If you feel breathless during normal activities or exercise, it could indicate that your heart is not receiving enough blood supply. 3. Pain Spreading to Other Areas Heart-related pain may radiate to other parts of the body, including: • Left arm • Neck • Jaw • Back or shoulders
These symptoms should never be ignored and may require immediate medical evaluation. 4. Dizziness or Lightheadedness Reduced blood flow to the heart can sometimes cause fainting, dizziness, or fatigue. 5. Persistent Fatigue Feeling unusually tired even with minimal activity may be another sign that your heart is working harder than normal. If you notice these symptoms, your doctor may advise that you Get CT coronary angiography scan at Butler Medical Imaging to identify the underlying cause quickly.
What Happens During the Angiogram Procedure? Many patients worry about medical tests, but CT coronary angiography is generally quick and comfortable. Here is what you can expect: Before the Scan • You may need to fast for a few hours. • Your doctor may advise avoiding caffeine before the test. • Your heart rate may be monitored to ensure optimal imaging. During the Scan • A contrast dye is injected into a vein in your arm. • You will lie on a CT scanning table. • The scanner rotates around your chest to capture detailed images. The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes. After the Scan Most patients can return to normal activities shortly afterwards. The radiologist reviews the images and sends results to your doctor for further evaluation.
