I just wanted to plug stanly.edu because after you pass the class you get academic licenses for vcenter + vsphere + workstation + fusion so its cheaper than vmug if you can wait until the end of the class for the licenses. permalink

You get the email at the end of the class, its the same webstore you get your exam voucher code from. Stanly will place the initial order for your vouchers for you and you will get them via email. It is from kivuto.com via onthehub.com. If you have used VMUG its similar. There is a webstore and you simply select workstation, esx, vcenter, etc, and it gives you 1 yr keys for each. permalink

Is VCA required or recommended before VCP? permalink
embed save
[–] vTimD
[VCIX6-NV] [S] 7 points 10 months ago
Totally not required, and personally, I wouldn't recommend it unless you really just want to. It's very marketing heavy, like which product does what. Not very tech heavy. I'd save my money for the VCP. permalink

+1 for this. It's for C-Levels and Architects, not Engineers. It's super easy and really not worth the money they charge now. I took it years ago when it was free and took about 15 minutes. permalink

"recommended" but not a requirement. you do have to take a qualifying class to be eligible for the VCP though. permalink

Just a note....the new VCA (changed around March of this year) is not as marketing heavy as in years past. You actually have to have an understanding of VMware functionality, as well as aspects of Web Client and vCenter. permalink

Agreed. I just took it in June and the free flash based prep course created by VMware was definitely geared towards the old marketing exam. I wouldn't recommend that prep course for the vca. Check out the pluralsight vca path instead. permalink

VCA6 is not a requirement - but it will help prep you for the Data Center Virtualization Fundamentals exam which is a requirement for the VCP6 cert. Here is the breakdown from VMware MyLearn site: https://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/plan.cfm?plan=64395&ui=www_edu#vca permalink

I'm using(for DCV) Stanley Community College - Manage and Optimize class for the class requirement. They give a voucher for retakes and lowers the price of the tests. It will almost pay for itself with that voucher. If you go to Install, Config and Manage class. You'll be on a waiting list. Got right in for Manage and Optimize. Then i'm using Pluralsight for the Initial run thru. Vbrownbag for the "burn in" and PasstheVCP for the end game because it has built in testing. permalink

Thank you! At my job, I somewhat became the "defacto" trainer (in certain topics)/cert info gatherer for my department. (IT training is some what limited at my Company) While I was looking for information outside of the official channels from VMware for myself to prep for the VCA6, I found that any good information was spread all over. I felt that this could be in a somewhat centralized location. That being said - if any of the resources that I provided, prove not to be relevant anymore, please let me know and I'll look for a replacement. permalink

My first VCP renewal is quickly approaching. Can anyone explain the difference(s) between the normal VCP exam and the delta version? permalink

[–] vrtigo1 [VCP] 4 points 10 months ago
The delta exam is shorter than the regular exam. It focuses more on what's new vs testing your knowledge of everything. permalink

[–] Gundam14 3 points 10 months ago
The VCP5 Delta exam is for those who need to recert the VCP5 credentials. But it was retired on March 31st of this year. The VCP6 Delta exam (2V0-621D) is out and this is used to recert/bring up-to-date those who already hold the VCP5 cert. Its the "Short-Cut" path to the VCP6 cert. The Normal VCP exam if for those who never held VCP5 cert/ or took an older (Later the VCP5) cert. permalink

[–] brianbunke [VCP] 2 points 10 months ago
Sorry, I wasn't clear. What does "shortcut" actually mean here? In other words, when I walk in to take the 6.5 VCP Delta (2V0-622D)--renewing my original 5.5 VCP--is it in any way a different experience than someone new who is taking their first 6.5 VCP exam? (The exam guide on the site looks exactly the same between the two.) Or is it strictly to help VMware know whether to cut a new cert vs. renewing an existing? permalink
embed save
parent
[–] Gundam14 2 points 10 months ago*
No worries. The Delta Exam tests on what is new with 6.5. Its thought of as a "Short-Cut" Cert path so those like yourself who hold a current VCP5/5.5 cert don't have to redo the entire training. Look the Delta Exam as renewing your Driver's License. (In a sense. This is a terrible example, but its the only one I could think of at the moment.) permalink

[–] av78130 1 point 10 months ago
it look's as though if you have a valid vcp5.5 cert, you have to delta to 6, then delta to 6.5. Or just take the vcp 6.5 full exam. This is according to the mylearn recert path info: https://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/plan.cfm?plan=100942&ui=www_cert#tab-migration permalink [–] vTimD

The delta contains less content and questions. Mainly a "what's new" from 5.5 to 6. The full vcp6 contains all of the content. permalink

It's not difference in the comparing versions sense. It is supposed to be just questions regarding new features that weren't in the last version, or questions that wouldn't apply to the previous version based on architecture, use, etc. permalink

parent
[–] eruffini 1 point 10 months ago
Right, but my experience taking the Delta exam wasn't anything to do with those types of questions. I know my Delta exam had a lot of questions on topics like PowerShell/PowerCLI, FCoE, and other things that were not applicable to new features or architecture changes. Things that I didn't study or weren't even mentioned on the blueprint study guides, etc. permalink

Something i found out (as i just started the Optimize & Scale class) is that when you go the Stanly.edu route, they WANT you to wait to take the exams because of the discounts you get post-class completion. Somewhere upwards of 70% off both exams (Foundations & VCP6-DCV) and up to 3 retries... hoping that discount holds true with the retries. ya know... just in case. Doubt you will have to re-word anything in the initial post but just wanted to put this info out there. permalink

Just a quick q on this. Do the install configure manage and optimise and scale give you the class credit for the vcp? permalink

parent
[–] oil_lio 1 point 7 months ago
Yes you get the class credit... as long as you follow up after the class and use the voucher codes to take the exams. VMWare told me that you can take the exams and class in any order but thats not the case if you go the route with Stanly. And as far as the other online classes that are offered at a discounted rate, i am not sure. Once you enroll for the online class via Stanly, you get a Stanly.edu email address and after you pass the class, you use that email address to register for the exams along with the discounted exam voucher which is linked to your Stanly.edu email. I am told that once you pass both exams, you can transfer the cert credit to a different email address so you aren't stuck using the Stanly.edu address moving forward but i am not there yet. Hopefully that helps you. permalink

Best of luck to you! I am still on track to taking the exams so I'm excited. The class isn't too bad at all, people say it's a waste of time but it's all about what 'you' get out of it. The labs similar to the VMWare Hands on Labs (that I love so much) in the way that you can really wreck the environment and be able to reset and start from scratch. The part that is lacking are the pre-recorded lectures, IMO. I was on the waiting list for ICM for a long time and then decided to sign up for OS and shortly after I was enrolled, so I can say much about ICMs content. permalink

[–] GloriousLeaderBeans 1 point 5 months ago
Well I'm almost finished the ICM, and starting OS next month. I'd agree on the prerecorded lectures, but other than that its been a fantastic experience. Labs are a bit fiddly to set up in the begining with most browsers out of Java support. Other than that its been great overall and seriously good value for money. Considering taking the RHCSA with them after Optimise and Scale. permalink

Am I correct in understanding going from a valid VCP5.5 cert to 6.5 requires one of the following?: 1. Passing the 6 delta, then 6.5 delta ($500/$250each) or 2. Passing the full VCP 6.5 ($250) Although the full VCP 6.5 may be cheaper, you will get tested over everything whereas the deltas are only based on the incremental changes in the new version. permalink
embed save
[–] TechFanGirl 2 points 10 months ago
If you have a valid VCP 5.5 cert (don't let it expire!!), then if you take the VCP 6 Delta and pass, you will be a VCP for another 2 years. You do not need to take both the VCP 6 and VCP 6.5 delta...unless you are required to be certified on a particular version for work, etc. permalink

parent
[–] VCPCoach 2 points 10 months ago
Exactly correct TechFanGirl. Keeping a current certification is more valuable (and less expensive) than letting it expire, then starting over. VMware VCP certification is now a two year certification, regardless of the test taken. So, AV78130 take the 6.0 Delta (from home I might add), and re-certify for another 2 years. Good luck. permalink

If you don't do design and architecture Day to day, I'd definitely say to start with the Deploy exam. That's more hands on, admin type stuff. The design exams require knowledge of the methodologies and stuff needed in Enterprise Architecture. 90% of people tech Deploy, then Design. permalink

v6 and v6.5 should be cross compatible. I think you’ll be able to get the 6.5 cert with that combo. I can ping cert ops to find out for sure. permalink

Nice, thanks! I suppose either way I'll have to take another test to get the 6.5 cert now that I think of it. Might as well just take the 6.5 test and if it turns out I need the 6.5 foundation test, I'll just take that and be good. permalink
