Suprapubic Catheterization Procedure What is Suprapubic Catheterization? Suprapubic Catheterization, also known as suprapubic cystostomy, is a surgical procedure where a catheter is inserted into the bladder through a small incision in the abdomen, just above the pubic bone (pubic symphysis), rather than through the urethra. This is typically performed when long-term catheterization is needed when the patient is unable to drain their bladder via the urethra due to damage or blockage, or If they are not able to use an intermittent urinary catheter.

Lightening as needed Gather all the supplies - Sterile Gloves, Antiseptic Solution, Sterile water or saline, Lubricant, Drainage Bag, Syringe, Tape, Gauze Before stating the process, inform the patient about the process Before starting the process firstly, Washing hands with soap and water Wearing two pairs of sterile gloves Lay the patient in comfort (supine) position attach syringe to balloon port of the catheter to empty the fluid from the balloon completely Use antiseptic solution to clean the area around the insertion site slowly pull out the catheter After this process, the old catheter is removed Now prepare new Catheter Lubricate the tip of the new catheter Now insert the new catheter as deep as the old catheter Attach syringe to balloon port of the new catheter to Inflating the balloon with 4-8 ml of sterile water After inflating the balloon, Ensure that the balloon holds a catheter tube. Checking for the urine to drain out Attaching the drainage bag.
How can you care the Suprapubic Catheter At Home? Open the catheter regularly at night while you sleep. Close it again in the morning. Wash the catheter from the inside with soapy water, then gently shake the drainage bag with soapy water to loosen anything stuck inside. Rinse with clean water until all the soapy water is removed. After rinsing with clean warm water, rinse the bag with a solution of vinegar and water, shake it, and leave it for 15 minutes.
