Former housing secretary Martínez wins Florida’s Republican Senate
Letter to La Prensa Readers:
Fahrenheit 9/11 sizzles
By KEN THOMAS Associated Press Writer MIAMI (AP): Mel Martínez, the former Bush administration housing secretary hoping to become the first Cuban-American senator, won the Republican nomination for Senate Tuesday in a primary that saw a mostly trouble-free test of the touchscreen machines introduced after Florida’s punch-card fiasco in 2000. In November, he will face Florida’s former Education Commissioner Betty Castor, a Democrat who swept to an overwhelming victory Tuesday as her party’s nominee. Martínez’ run had quiet support from the White
Political House, which had repeatedly urged him behind the scenes to seek the Senate seat. Republicans have predicted that Martínez could boost a large turnout among CubanAmericans in South Florida and a growing Hispanic community in central Florida. As a teenage refugee, Martínez also had a compelling personal story that spoke to many Floridians. In a field of seven Republicans, Martínez drew 42 percent, or 388,226 votes, with 74 percent of precincts reporting. Bill McCollum, his nearest rival and a former congressman who won the nomination in 2000, had 33 percent, or 304,630 votes.
Piñata Castor drew 59 percent, or 548,564 votes, with 84 percent of precints reporting. Editor’s Note: Colorado’s Ken Salazar also won his primary in his quest for the U.S. Senate. Joseph Montoya, a Democrat from New Mexico (1964-1977), was the last of only three Latinos to serve in the Senate during the last century. The others, Dennis Chavez and Octaviano Larrazolo, also represented New Mexico.
First Latino justice sworn in to state Supreme Court TRENTON, N.J. (AP): New Jersey’s first Latino Supreme Court justice was sworn in Wednesday during a private ceremony and began his duties immediately as a member of the state’s highest court. The oath of office was administered to Roberto Rivera-Soto by Associate Justice Virginia Long. Rivera-Soto will take a ceremonial oath during a public event scheduled for Sept. 14. Rivera-Soto replaces Peter J. Verniero, who re-
tired from the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Rivera-Soto, 50, is a career trial attorney best known in the legal community for the 10 years he represented an Atlantic City casino. The Haddonfield resident most recently worked for a law firm based in Philadelphia. He was nominated in April by Gov. James E. McGreevey. He has no previous judicial experience and declined under questioning during his Senate confirmation hearing in June to comment on what
positions he would take on legal topics such as abortion and the death penalty. Verniero said he cut short his seven-year term so he could make more money in the private sector.

Most of you probably know this already, but one of the biggest hit movies of the summer was made by a guy from Michigan—Michael Moore. His movie is called Fahrenheit 9/11, and even though a lot of it deals with the war in Iraq, it’s about much more than that. One of the most powerful parts of the movie doesn’t take place in Iraq, but in Flint, Michigan. Michael Moore took his camera up to Flint to show the poverty that exists in many cities in this country and to show one of the darker secrets about the war—that many of the people fighting joined the military because they are poor and there are no jobs available. It’s what a lot of people call the poverty draft, and Fahrenheit 9/11 shows how it works. Brothers and sisters, we’ve all seen UAW jobs get shipped down South and outsourced to other countries, and we’ve seen how this hurts cities like Flint and Detroit. It used to be that a kid getting out of high school could get a job working the line for Ford or GM, but what can they do now? Well, in Fahrenheit 9/11, we see that many of the kids in these cities that have lost their jobs sign up for the army, since it’s the only job they can get. In one scene in the movie, Moore follows two Marine recruiters around a shopping mall in Flint, as they try to get young kids signed up for the service. They don’t tell the kids about serving their country, about the war they’ll be fighting—they talk about the Marines like it’s just a cool job they can get. They even tell one kid that the Marines will help him get a career in music. In that same scene, the recruiters decide not to go another mall because it’s in a wealthier part of town, and they figure that they won’t be able to get any wealthy kids signed up. I’m not blaming these recruiters for being part of an unfair system—they’re just doing their jobs. But the fact is, Fahrenheit 9/11 makes a very important point. No matter how you feel about President Bush or the war in Iraq, there’s something wrong with a system where the poor and working people have to go fight the wars but the rich people get to make all of the decisions. In another scene, Moore goes to Washington D.C. asking members of Congress if they’ll sign their children up to go fight in Iraq. Since all the politicians talk how important it is to fight for your country, Moore wants to know why their kids aren’t the ones doing the fighting. None of them—not the Democrats nor the Republicans—sign their kids up. This kind of thing isn’t just true with the war in Iraq—how many kids of Congressmen do you know working in the auto plants here in Detroit? Yet the politicians and wealthy executives get to decide when our jobs our shipped away. Even though a lot of Fahrenheit 9/11 is certainly against Bush and the Republicans, you don’t have to be a Democrat to agree with the fact that we—the workers—are the ones fighting a war every day, on the shop floor and in our communities. Flint and Detroit look a lot like each other, and in both cities we’re in a battle to keep our jobs and our rights on the job; we’re also in a war to have good schools and healthy communities. The enemy we’re fighting in this war isn’t Saddam Hussein or Osama Bin Laden; it’s the system that lets our jobs get shipped away and forces our kids to sign up for the military because they don’t have any other way to make a living. I read an article the other day that reminded me of Fahrenheit 9/11. The article talked about “green card soldiers” in Iraq, immigrants who sign up for the military because they are told that if they serve, they will get their green cards. According to this article, as many green card soldiers have died in Iraq as other soldiers, but these immigrant soldiers don’t get counted in the body counts. This made me think of all the immigrant workers who get jobs in the U.S., but who are never counted among U.S. citizens, never get to have the same rights as the rest of us. To me, the most powerful message of Fahrenheit 9/11 is that the war in Iraq is connected to what’s happening to workers and poor people here in the U.S. And that means when people tell me to support the troops, I tell them I do support the troops, but I don’t support the politicians. I support the green card soldiers and all other the poor kids who are fighting in Iraq and don’t even have jobs to come home to, and I stand in solidarity with all my brothers and sisters fighting the war here in the union and on the shop floor. Sincerely,
John Martínez Editor Local UAW 22 Michigan

La Raza calls on Bush to eliminate his document disclosure requirement for migrant medical treatment insufficient review. “It lacks support among the very hospitals it claims to help and it is going to terrify immigrant communities, including those who are legally present and keep them from seeking life-saving emergency care. The public health implications of this proposal could be catastrophic. “This proposal also fosters racial and ethnic profiling in health care settings and undermines attempts to close racial disparities and discrimination in health care.” NCLR urges CMS to eliminate conditions requiring that patients receiving emergency care have their immigration status recorded and maintained. This law was enacted to help eliminate some of the financial strain that health care providers may have due to uncompensated care; instead, it works to create additional burdens on health care professionals. Many
busy and overextended emergency room workers will have to divert their attention from treating patients in order to fulfill complex, immigration-related paperwork requirements. In addition, the proposal does not provide any protection against patient information being used for purposes other than reimbursement to providers, and does not limit information-sharing. There is nothing in the law that requires CMS to interpret it in this manner, and there are alternative methods for determining the size of a provider’s undocumented patient population. NCLR urges the Bush Administration to eliminate the current documentation requirements that only serve to harm Latino and immigrant communities and disrupt the public health system.
‘‘
The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), a national Latino civil rights organization, called on the Bush Administration last week to rescind a proposal issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) which would undermine public health, deter immigrant communities from seeking emergency health care, and overburden hospitals. The CMS proposal interprets Section 1011 of last year’s Medicare Act which would provide funding to providers serving emergency room patients regardless of their immigration status. NCLR President Raul Yzaguirre stated, “I’m not sure what CMS and the Administration are trying to accomplish through this illadvised proposal; I would hope they would recognize the danger of moving it forward so quickly and with

RAMIRO BURR’S LATIN MUSIC: Ely Guerra likes to keep changing her style By RAMIRO BURR Mexican alt-rock singersongwriter Ely Guerra says she hates order and predictability, especially in her music. “I believe in constant development. I believe that disorder is necessary in a culture,” Guerra said in her native Spanish in a recent interview. “I really don’t like those musicians that are doing the same thing every record. It’s not interesting to me. The surprise or the freshness of the music is a really important part as a composer, as a creative person.” Freewheeling, jam-filled rock with unpredictable start/stop tempos, sprinkled with psychedelic and jazzy flavorings, is about the closest way to describe Guerra’s latest CD, Sweet & Sour, Hot y Spicy. Guerra, who played with Café Tacuba and Control Machete at Planeta Bar-Rio in July, said her passion for change and evolution comes in part from considering herself a devoted fan.
“Normally I do my stuff with musicians, but I am also part of the audience sometimes,” she said. “I buy music and I also buy records, not as much as other musicians. And I like to be a part of the audience.” As a fan, Guerra said she always enjoys spontaneous creativity, which is what she aims for in her music. “I put a lot of effort in each one of my songs in order to let them grow, in order to really experiment in something different that makes me feel that I’m in the middle of a challenge,” she said. “Right now I’m 32. I did my last record when I was 27. I am not the same person because I’ve been growing and experimenting in so many things, and I believe in development.” Born in Monterrey and raised in Guadalajara, México, Guerra was the middle of three daughters in a middle-income family. Her mother was a model and homemaker while her father
was a professional soccer player. Musically, she counts Depeche Mode, Agustin Lara and Edie Brickell among her influences, as well as a lot of the Brazilian music her parents played at home. Her previous album, Lotofire, was critically praised, which was a problem for the singer. “It’s hard for me to say that my last record ... was a really big record for me,” she said. “It was a big moment for me. But I really needed to make a move to be satisfied, to feel so much confidence with the new record. And I guessed if I did something similar to Lotofire it would be the second part of Lotofire, and to me it’s not really fair.” Overall, Sweet & Sour, with its retro-rock touches, sounds darker and more intense than the last album. Mas Bonita sounds like Iron Butterfly jamming with a mellow Janis Joplin, while Puerto Vallarta has a light bossa nova feel. Te Amo, I Love You mixes folkish sentiment, jazz singing and

psychedelic meanderings for a strange brew that sounds best suited for a rock speakeasy. Guerra can also get romantic, as on the breezy pop of Besame, a tropical rock jam where she coos a simple desire for a kiss. When she whispers her longings, she sounds like a laid-back Suzanne Vega. As a singer, Guerra has power, control and range. Despite her diminutive size (she stands just over 5 feet), she can belt the blues. But she also can lower the vocal intensity, shifting the focus to her direct and introspective lyrics. On Te Amo, she describes the fears and doubts, the confusion and the conflict, that sometimes come when a new love arrives. Her music, especially live, evokes the nostalgic ‘70s days of freewheeling album rock with its guitar feedback, fuzz-tones and tempochanging dynamics. Along with the musical shift toward a harder edge, Guerra changed her image for this album, sporting a huge Afro and a disco-eralooking dress. “I’m always changing my hair. I think it’s a necessity for me. I have been bald and I’ve been blonde, and worn different styles,” she said.
“For me it’s not that radical. It’s just another way of feeling. Every time I feel different inside, I need to do something with my image.” Guerra, who was one of the headliners at the recent Latin Alternative Music Conference in Los Angeles, has been busy with other projects. She sang and cowrote the first single off the soundtrack of the hit film Amores Perros, and also wrote the only vocal track on the soundtrack for the film De la Calle. She also was part of the Los Tigres del Norte tribute album, recording a version of La Tumba Falsa. Editor’s Note: Ramiro Burr covers the Latin music scene

Tom Capone, top Brazilian music producer, killed in LA crash following Latin Grammys LOS ANGELES (AP), Sept. 3: Tom Capone, a Brazilian music producer nominated for five Latin Grammys, was killed in a motorcycle crash hours after being shut out at the awards show. He was 38. Capone, whose real name was Luis Antonio Ferreira Goncalves, was widely known as a producer for many top names on the Brazilian music scene. He died early Thursday when his Harley Davidson collided with a car in the Van Nuys area of the city, police said Friday. Capone was thrown from the motorcycle. The driver of the car was not injured.
A toxicology test was under way, Los Angeles County coroner’s spokesman David Campbell said. A preliminary report showed Capone died of multiple traumatic injuries and that investigators noted the odor of alcohol on him, Campbell said. Capone had five Grammy nominations, including producer of the year; two for record of the year (Maria Rita’s A Festa and Skank’s Dois Rios); album of the year; and best engineered album for Rita’s eponymous CD. He failed to receive any awards at the ceremony Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

“The Latin Recording Academy, Brazilian music and the world have lost a great music maker,” Gabriel Abaroa, president of the Latin Recording Academy, said in a statement Friday. Capone, who lived in Rio de Janeiro, worked with major Brazilian artists such as Paralamas do Sucesso, Legiao Urbana and the late Cassia Eller. He produced for rock acts such as Raimundos, Skank and O Rappa as well as for more traditional Brazilian artists like Milton Nascimento, Marisa Monte and Carlinhos Brown.

LICE, TX, (AP): Laura Cantu, a pioneer of Tejano music, died here on Aug. 29. She was 78. She died of natural causes, her family said. Ms. Cantu and her sister, Carmen, gained stardom during the 1940s as the singing duo Carmen y Laura and went on to perform for two decades. Tejano music combines influences from country music, rhythm and blues and popular Latin styles. Ms. Cantu recorded her first song, “Se Me Fue Mi Amor,” in a living room with blankets on the walls to dampen the sound, her nephew, Armando Marroquin, told The Corpus Christi Caller-Times. “They used to put blankets with rope all around the room to have acoustics,” he said. “They really improvised.” Ms. Cantu and her sister have been recognized by the Tejano Conjunto Hall of Fame in San Antonio, the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame in Alice, Tex., and other organizations.

Third Hispanic Business Expo tremendous success Growing migrant Latino businesses and the explosion of Latinos in the United States are just some of the reasons that the third annual Hispanic Business Expo and Economic Summit, which was held last week at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center, drew some 800 attendants, a fourfold increase from previous years. According to co-organizer Enrique Carrillo, Vice President of Public Affairs, Comerica Bank & Chairman, “It was our goal to provide a venue for Hispanic, small and minority businesses would have access to the buyers and purchasing agents from Fortune 100, 500 and Public Sector agencies. “Corporate America wants to tap into the Latino market, in all its forms. Networking was also provided. “The comments I heard from those that purchased booths were unbelievably positive. One minority-owned vendor, Evigna, approached me at 8:30 a.m. and said, “Enrique, the leads we have obtained in the past 20 minutes have already justified the expense of participating today.” Numerous businesses—both Latino and non-Latino— purchased booths to familiarize those in attendance with the nature of their respective businesses. A luncheon was provided, courtesy of General Motors. A panel discussion followed. “Today, we established a very high goal for future Expos. We had the participation of the governor of Michigan, Jennifer Granholm, Wayne County executive, Robert Ficano, and the mayors of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick, and Lansing, Antonio Benavides—thus, the CEOs of the state, county, and city where the event took place. “We had nearly 800 participants and that is a significant number of individuals for any event, Hispanic or otherwise. We shall continue to grow this event, particularly on the side of exhibitors and participants,” said Carrillo. According to Mexican Cónsul Antonio Meza Estrada, who was in attendance, “I congratulate the organizers. The Expo is an outstanding event that shows us how Latino businesses are growing in Detroit, with close ties to the community. “I’m proud to represent the government of México and we are able to evolve into organizations like HBA to improve the economic ties between Latino businesses and México.” The Expo had numerous sponsors and partners.

Hay Love y amor at credit union One of the goals of the Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union (TUFCU) is to bring a branch and its community services that the credit union now provides to a predominantly African-American customer base to the region’s Latino community. According to Suzette Cowell, CEO and treasurer of TUFCU, Guadalupe “Lupe” Love will be critical to the success of this second branch, which will probably be lodged in East Toledo by the first of the year. Love, who has worked with Cowell at the Dorr Street office since February, is wellpositioned to make TUFCU’s move into the Latino community a success. The Tejana—a 20-year Toledo resident—comes from a family of migrant workers. She opted to move away from her small-town Texas beginnings years ago to forge a better lifestyle. Love’s first move was to Wisconsin where she met her husband-to-be. The couple, now divorced, moved to Toledo when he was transferred here by Jeep. Lupe spent 10 years with UPS, six years with a nonprofit agency, and eventually caught the eye of Cowell who recruited her to TUFCU. Part of Love’s duties include providing bilingual services to customers, duties which will expand after the opening of the credit union’s second branch.
Lupe Love “We have here a lot of people from a variety of Latin American countries who use Western Union to send money back home,” said Love. “Our service—International Remittance—will be much less expensive for them.” As Love explained, many Latinos don’t have a lot of faith in banking institutions. “I remember my childhood. My parents never used banks. They kept all their money at home. They still do. I visited my parents recently in Texas and my mother is still keeping her money under a mattress.” Lack of bilingual services, said Love, contributes to the distrust of such institutions. She and Cowell hope to overcome at least that part of the reason for such distrust. “It will be easier for our customers,” said Love, “and we will provide a personal contact. Love balances her banking career with family and school obligations. She has three daughters: Lakisha, 21; Nicole, 19; and Mimi, 16. Lakisha and Nicole are students at Xavier University in Cincinnati. Mimi is a junior at Whitmer High School. Love is pursuing a degree in business and finance.
Bishop A. James Quinn, Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland, will accompany the Latino Catholic community at the bilingual Eucharistic celebration that begins at 7:00 p.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 3114 Scranton Road, Cleveland. This year’s guest homilist will be Rev. Mr. Alfredo Díaz from the Diocese of Toledo. The liturgy will also include the participation of representatives from the different parish choirs. A reception with refreshments and desserts will follow in the St. Michael Gruss Hall. Among the various performers at the reception will be ‘RAICES,’ a children’s dance group from St. Bernard’s, Akron. All are welcome to this festive and joyous event being held during Hispanic Heritage Month! For more information, please contact María C. Berríos at 216-696-6525 or 1-800-869-6525 extension 2530.

ABLE celebrates 35 years of providing accessible legal services Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE) and its affiliate, Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO), are celebrating thirty-five years of access to justice in northwest Ohio. Established in 1969 by a group of attorneys looking to develop a program that would provide affirmative advocacy on behalf of the poor through civil rights and law reform work, ABLE and LAWO have become models for legal services programs across the country. “Since our inception, we have focused our efforts on providing high quality civil legal services to lowincome individuals and groups, helping them to achieve equal opportunity, equality, and self-reliance in our community,” says ABLE Executive Director Joseph R. Tafelski. “Because of the many dedicated and involved lawyers and others who have supported ABLE and LAWO we have been able to stay true to this mission throughout our history.”

More board-certified physicians. The
ER for prompt, personal care.
While the time you’re likely to spend at most ER waiting rooms is roughly the same, the number of board-certified physicians on staff to assist you can vary greatly. That’s why, at The Toledo Hospital and Toledo Children’s Hospital, our ER is staffed by more board-certified physicians, each with the tools and the training to diagnose problems, direct treatment and drive recovery times. Because quality emergency care isn’t just about how fast you’re seen, it’s about how quickly you return home.
