Ching Chen with her guests on the very first Guest Day Tournament
Since we had many much needed rainy days this past month, we had to cancel three Eclectic tournaments and one Guest Day Tournament. When we were finally able to play on January 31, everyone was happy to enjoy the lush green beautiful course and nice sunny weather. FHWGA PAST PRESIDENTS We would like to thank the hard work of all the past FHWGA presidents who are still actively contributing to our ladies group. They put their heart and soul into making all our activities fun every year. We appreciate it very much. Many of them have shared with us some fun facts and pictures. - Janet Osborn has a big family with son, Jim Osborn actively involved in the club. - Nancy Shields (1994) with Diane Robson (1995) had a hole-in-one, with Nadine Pierandozzi on the right and Donna Forlizzi on the left. Welcome back to the ladies group this year, Diane. - Kathy Kow (1996) The fiscal year of FHWGA was changed from June – May to January - December that year. She was president for an extra 6 months. - Karen Johnson (2006) That year, the board reviewed and updated the By-Laws and Standing Rules, created a database of all FHWGA members and established Locker Assignment Rules. - Barbara Carty (2014). Her son Mitch Carty is actively involved in the club. She won President’s cup with Karin James in 2014. Ching Chen (2015, 2016). She first joined Friendly Hills in 2004. 4

Food & Beverage IN THE KITCHEN by Peter Phan, Executive Chef
Peter Phan I would like to share with you my Baked Potato Soup recipe. This recipe yields about 20 cups 3 lbs Idaho Potatoes, skin on ½ lb Butter, unsalted ¾ lb Yellow Onions, diced ½ lb Celery, diced 1 TBS Dried Thyme 1/3 cup All Purpose Flour 12 cups Chicken Broth 2 Cups Whole Milk 1 TBS Salt ½ TBS Black Pepper ½ lb Sour Cream Place whole potatoes on a sheet pan and bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 60 minutes or until fork tender. Set aside to cool. Then peel the skin of the roasted potatoes and dice the flesh of the potato into ½ in pieces and set aside In a large sauce pot, melt the butter and add onions, celery, garlic, and thyme. Cook the vegetables on medium heat until the vegetables are translucent (about 6-8 minutes). Then slowly add the flour and be sure to mix well. Cook that for ab out 3-4 minutes to form a roux. The mixture should pull to the center of the pot. Add chicken broth and stir until the roux is dissolved. Bring to a simmer for 20 minutes. Add the potatoes, milk, salt and pepper and simmer for another 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and whisk in the sour cream. Adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve the soup and top with shredded cheddar cheese, bacon bits, and chives.

Men’s Golf OFF THE TEE by Jay Prestella, Head Golf Pro
Jay Prestella A JUNIOR SUCCESS This past week Kris and Raj from the Pro Shop hosted the first Junior Clinic of the New Year! Hosting 10 juniors of all ages, they taught them the fundamentals of the game we all love. The kids had a blast learning the grip, full swing, chip shots, and putting. Having contests like playing chip tic, tac, toe were some of the many fun games they participated in (all of the kids won of course). The clinic will continue on for another 3 weeks leading into future clinics, summer junior camp, and junior team play. Thank you for participating!

Tennis COURTSIDE by Missy Reyna
Missy Reyna Despite the rain, the Friendly Hills Women’s Tennis Association has managed to enjoy some fun competition on the courts. We kicked off February with a day of love... Ladies Day was hosted by Carole Macaulay and Debbie Bratton. First place went to our newest member, Kim Johnson, second Place went to Melanie Lyons and third place went to Crista Lantz. Congratulations ladies! In Team Tennis, Carolann’s Cougars are pulling into a strong first place position with 9 matches won for the year. Lora’s Panthers have 6 matches won so far, but there is still plenty of time to catch up. We are always looking for new members to join in the fun! Feel free to join us the first Wednesday of each month for Ladies Day.
WELCOME NEW TENNIS INSTRUCTOR QUINN CALDARON Quinn began his tennis career in 2002 as the Director of Tennis for his alma mater, California Lutheran University where he facilitated their Tennis camps with over forty participants and coached nationally ranked juniors. Quinn also served as Moorpark High School’s Varsity and Junior Varsity’s Head Tennis Coach, as well as California Lutheran University Men’s Assistant Coach. In 2015, Quinn was named the Tennis Director and Head Men’s Tennis Coach at Whittier College where he recruits and trains college players in addition to managing the entire tennis operation. Although Quinn has remained busy, that didn’t stop him from building Caldaron Academy where he offers group instruction, clinics and individual instruction. With six distinguished awards under his belt, including ITA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2012, we are thrilled to see Quinn Caldaron enhance our Tennis program here at the Club. He will lead all tennis programs including clinics, junior camps, player development initiatives, group instruction and private instruction at FHCC. Please join us in welcoming Quinn to the FHCC Family!
Please contact Quinn directly via phone at (805) 907-2700 or

Golf
ON COURSE by Michael Wolpoff, Golf Superintendent
Michael Wolpoff Hello from the Golf Course Maintenance Department! Well, this is La Niña… So far, since October 1st, 2016 we have totaled over 11” of rain. This has been the most consistently wet winter in my time in Southern California. The constant flow of precipitation events has resulted in our staff working some interesting hours in order to squeeze certain agronomic practices in between events. To their credit, they have been very helpful in these endeavors. With this wet, cool weather comes high pressure for disease occurrence in the fairways. Brown patch is a particularly aggressive disease on kikuyugrass in this weather. Thus far, our plant protectant program has been successful with only a few small outbreak areas. The rain has aided in the recovery of the drill and fill process that took place last fall. As I had mentioned in the previous article, while it has only been one drill and fill application so far, the results are quite positive as it pertains to moving water off of the greens surface. We do still see standing water on greens following excessive rainfall, but that water takes longer to build up and dissipates more rapidly than in the past. Our eyes are now starting to turn toward items we would like to address prior to the Member Guest events at the end of April.
It may seem like this is a long way off, but the days and weeks speed by, especially when several days are lost to rain. Our spring aerification commenced on Monday, February 27th and continued through that week. During that time we implemented a deep tine aeration ofthe greens, followed by the DryJect Maximus and a standard core aeration. Each of these processed does something a little different and they all contribute to the overall improvement of the soil properties of the greens. The deep tine aeration will help to fracture the soil and the layer that exists at approximately 4.5” which will allow deeper sand injection by the Dryject Maximus. The standard core aeration will continue to help manage the organic matter in the upper rootzone. I will be working with our Head Golf Professional Jay Prestella and Taylor Stewart to begin producing some short educational videos related to the golf course. Topics will include ball mark repair, how to fill a divot, aerification processes and other course related educational opportunities. So keep an eye out on the website for these videos coming soon. Thank you for your support!
