The Growing Concern Progressive Myopia in Children
What is Myopia?
Myopia, or short-sightedness, causes blurred distance vision. In recent years, progressive myopia has been rising at an alarming rate in children.
By 2050, over HALF of the world’s population is predicted to have myopia – with 10% developing high myopia, increasing the risk of serious eye conditions like: Retinal detachment Glaucoma Myopic maculopathy
What’s Causing This Increase?
🔹 Genetics – A child with one myopic parent is 2.5x more likely to develop myopia, increasing to 3.5x if both parents are myopic
🔹 Lifestyle Factors – Excessive screen time & near work (reading, devices) 🔹 Less Time Outdoors – Limited exposure to natural sunlight
What Can Parents Do? Schedule regular eye exams
✅ Limit screen time to 20-30 min sessions ✅ Lead by example – Reduce your own device use ✅ Encourage 2+ hours of outdoor activity daily
