ABSTRACT
Nesvi Nolita, (2014): The Correlation between Students’ Self-esteem and Their Reading Comprehension at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency.
Based on School Based Curriculum (KTSP), the purpose of learning English is to develop students’ competence in oral and written communication in order to reach the functional literacy. After doing the observation at Junior High School 10 Tapung, the researcher found and identified several problems that students had in reading comprehension such as some of the students got difficulty to identify information from descriptive text, some of the students had lack of vocabulary, some of the students gave up when they face any difficulties in reading task, and some of the students had low confidence in learning reading. The purpose of this research was to determine self-esteem of the seven grade students at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency, to determine reading comprehension of the seven grade students at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency, and also to determine whether there was or not significant correlation between students’ self-esteem and reading comprehension of the seven grade students at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency. This research was a correlational research. Questionnaire was used to determine self-esteem of the students and test was used to determine the students’ reading comprehension. The subject of this research was the seven grade students at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency. Overall the research population was 112 students. The researcher took 30 students as the sample. In analyzing the data, the researcher used pearson product moment correlation formula. The result of the analysis of this research was 0.628 higher than rtable at level 5% (0.374) and at level 1% (0.479). It can be concluded that null hypothesis (H o) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In other words, there was significant positive correlation between students’ self-esteem and their reading comprehension of the seven grade at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency. Thus, it can be concluded that the higher the students’ self-esteem is, the higher the students’ reading comprehension will be.

Nesvi Nolita, (2014): Hubungan antara Harga Diri Siswa dengan Pemahaman Membaca Mereka di SMP Negeri 10 Tapung Kabupaten Kampar Berdasarkan KTSP, tujuan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris adalah agar siswa mampu mengembangkan kompetensi berkomunikasi dalam bentuk lisan dan tulisan untuk mencapai tingkat literasi fungsional. Setelah melakukan observasi di SMP Negeri 10 Tapung Kabupaten Kampar, penulis mengidentifikasi beberapa masalah meliputi: beberapa siswa kesulitan dalam mengidentifikasi informasi dalam teks deskriptif, beberapa siswa kesulitan dalam memiliki kosa kata yang minim, beberapa siwa mudah menyerah ketika menghadapi kesulitan dalam tugas reading Bahasa Inggris dan beberapa siswa memiliki rasa percaya diri yang rendah dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui harga diri siswa kelas tujuh SMP Negeri 10 Tapung Kabupaten Kampar, untuk mengetahui pemahaman membaca siswa kelas tujuh SMP Negeri 10 Tapung Kabupaten Kampar, dan juga untuk mengetahui apakah ada hubungan yang signifikan atau tidak antara harga diri siswa dengan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas tujuh SMP Negeri 10 Tapung Kabupaten Kampar. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian korelasi. Penulis menggunakan angket untuk mengetahui harga diri siswa dan menggunakan tes untuk mengetahui pemahaman membaca siswa. Jumlah populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah 112 siswa yang terdiri dari 4 kelas. Penulis mempunyai 30 siswa sebagai sampel. Dalam analisis data, penulis menggunakan koofisien korelasi pearson product moment dengan menggunakan bantuan SPSS 16.00. Hasil analisa penelitian ini adalah ro = 0,628, lebih tinggi dari r tabel pada taraf 5% (0.374) dan 1% (0,479). Dari hasil tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa hippotesis Null (Ho) di tolak dan hipotesis Alternatif (Ha) diterima. Dengan kata lain, ada hubungan positif yang significan antara harga diri siswa dengan pemahaman membaca mereka di SMP Negeri 10 Tapung Kabupaten Kampar. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa semakin tinggi harga diri siswa maka semakin tinggi pemahaman membaca mereka.
