Top places to visit in Sunderbans: There is no such interesting place that we find in other trips. Sundarbans Tour is all about sailing in the water. Some islands have watch towers that give you an aerial view of the mangroves. If you are lucky, you may spot a deer or a tiger from the watchtower. The pedestrian bridge over the mangroves deep in the forest in Dobanki is really a super attraction. Godkhali Godkhali is the island from where your tour of the Sundarbans begins. After loading all the necessities on the boat, the boat will leave from here. Make sure you buy all the necessities from here before you leave. If you reserve your boat from Godkhali, the boat will be waiting for you on the bank of the river. Once you are there, you will find the signboard that welcomes you to the land of mangroves and tigers. This is where the photo op begins. Don't forget to pose in front of the signboard welcoming you to the Sundarbans.
gosaba This is another island on the other side of Godkhali. The boat can take you to this beautiful village if they have something to ship from the market. There is a market on the banks of the river in Gosaba where villagers from far flung areas come to shop. There is an ancient bungalow here which was established by Sir Daniel McKinnon Hamilton during the British period. He was a Scottish businessman who made Bengal his second home and lived in this bungalow. He was a close associate of Nobel laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore and Mr. Tagore had visited this bungalow long ago. The bungalow is still there, but it is in poor condition due to lack of maintenance. You can walk around the market and the bungalow and then board your boat. Pakhiralaya The boat starts from Gosaba or Gidkhali and then takes you across the mighty Bidya River. After viewing some of the river channels within the forest, the boat will take you to Pakhirlay another island. All resorts are located in or near Pakhirlay. The first night is spent here at any of the resorts in Pakhiralaya. I've never been to a resort because I like to spend the night in boats the way sailors live. It is not recommended to spend the night in a boat if you have a family. It's okay for young people to be in a boat.
sajnekhali
This is another island that has got the forest department's office to issue permits for you and your boat to go deep inside the forest. All boats leave the banks at Pakhirlay and Sajnekhali the next morning for permission. The Forest Department has beautified the place with a museum for the tourists which is really a good one which depicts the life of the local people, the life of the forest personnel who work hard to save the Royal Bengal Tiger and from the Sundarbans wildlife. There are many other things related. There are ponds with crocodiles, chital, sambar etc. It takes half an hour to an hour to get permission. Till that time one can go around the place and then it is time to go deep into the forest.
Sudhanyakhali Once permission is granted from the Sajnekhali Forest Office, it is time to delve deeper into the mangroves. After you get permission, the first destination on your way to sail within the Sundarbans is Sudhanyakhali. The place has a watch tower built by the Forest Department which gives you an aerial view of the mangroves and river channels around it. If you are lucky you may spot a wild animal. I didn't get a glimpse of a wild fellow from here because my luck favors me when I go deeper through the channels. Last time we saw a beautiful owl here in Sudhanyakhali.
dobanki After visiting Sudhanyakhali, it is time to sail and sail. The route from Sudhanyakhali to Dobanki is really long but it is the real and most exciting part of the Sundarbans boat tour. In this section your boat goes along very narrow rivulets of rivers with different types of mangroves on either side of the canals. On this section, the chances or chances of finding crocodiles and tigers are highest. Last time we saw 4 crocodiles at different places on this route.
After a long journey, the boat drops you off at DobankiGhat. There you have a foot bridge as I said earlier which takes you over the mangroves. Dobankika bridge starts from a place where your boat will drop you and ends at another place from where your boat will pick you up. It is truly a wonderful experience to walk on the bridge within the mangroves. There is a high chance that you will see a deer or some other wild companion as the Dobanki Forest Department has created freshwater ponds that actually attract animals to the freshwater. Last time we saw 2 deer and so many types of birds.
Panchmukhi After the boat starts from Dobanki, it is time to visit Panchmukhi, the meeting point of the five rivers. Five rivers meet at a point with a beautiful surroundings. Panchmukhi has a lot of chances and chances of spotting deer or herd of deer on the banks of rivers. We spent a lot of time in the middle by anchoring our boat. Actually we had the pleasure of taking a bath here by taking out the water from the bucket from the river. It is time to go from Panchmukhi towards Godkhali. Lunch is served on the way and by evening the boat drops you off at Godkhali.
