MSC Hiring Process STEP 1. Determine Credentials: Each mariner applying for a position with MSC is required to have a Merchant Mariners Credential. Endorsement levels will depend on the persons level of military, mariner or civilian experience and each endorsement requires various forms of documentation, maritime classes, skill levels and sea time. The USCG National Maritime Center will review your application and issue you endorsements based on your qualifications. STEP 2. Information Request Form: The first step in the profile create process is filling out an information request form (IRF), do this by visiting https://apply.sealiftcommand.com/irf. Here you will enter your basic contact and background information in addition to confirming you have the necessary documentation to apply with MSC. Be sure to enter a valid email address here as you will be contacted by MSC immediately upon submission. STEP 3. Verify & Complete Profile: After filling out and submitting the 3 page IRF, you will receive a verification email from MSC. Click the link (or cut & paste in your browser) to verify and be directed to the Profile Overview page your newly created profile. This page will give you a summary of information missing from your profile. You can click through each tab of your profile and update information as necessary. Once your profile shows 100% in the upper right corner you are ready to begin applying. STEP 4. Develop Evaluation Criteria: While you can come and go from your profile and take as long as you’d like to complete it – that is not the case with the application. Once you click “Submit an application” you have a finite period of time to complete it. For that reason we suggest applicants spend time considering what they may want to include in their application. One very important (and time consuming) portion of the application is the Evaluation Criteria – These are used by evaluators to determine levels of experience and comprehension and help distinguish candidates from one another. In order to avoid being timed out of the application process we recommend candidates download the Job Opening Announcement for the position of their choice from https://sealiftcommand.com/now-hiring/, read the Evaluation Criteria and use a word processor (such as Microsoft Word or text edit) to develop answers. STEP 5. Application Submission: With your profile at 100% complete, click “Apply for a Position” In the yellow bar in the bottom right corner of the profile. Select the position you would like to apply for from the list of open positions, then read the description and requirements carefully. If, after reading the duties and requirements of the position you would like to apply, click “Apply for this Position” at the bottom of that page. On the “Evaluation Criteria Statements” page, there is a link to download the Job Opening Announcement where you can read each of the criteria before addressing them below with examples of your knowledge, skills & abilities based on the requirements of the position. (This is where we suggest you cut and paste your responses from earlier). On the next page review the resume developed from your profile and “Evaluation Criteria” information. If there is any information on your resume you would like to update click the “Edit” at the top of the document, if you are satisfied with all of the information, click “Continue”. On the final page you will select that you “Agree” to submit your application, include the last 4 numbers of your social security number as a digital signature and the click “Sign” to finally submit your application. Upon submission you will be taken to a page stating you’ve “Successfully Submitted Your Application” which will be your confirmation that we have received the application. STEP 6. One on One Interview: Applications will be asked to participate in an in-person or web-based interview to begin the hiring process. STEP 7. Conditional Offer of Employment: Once your application has met MSC’s conditions of employment, and if selected a confidential employment offer will be made. STEP 8. Pre-Employment Requirements: There are several pre-employment prescreening efforts that must have happened before a selected applicant is scheduled for New Employee Orientation (NEO). STEP 8A. Background Check & Drug Screening: The first step is the successful completion of MSC’s security clearance process. Electronic Questionnaires for Investigations Processing (EQIP) in tandem, our drug screening will be scheduled at an MSC approved facility. STEP 8B. Medical Evaluation The next step is the medical evaluation of applicantsMSC will schedule a physical exam at the nearest MSC authorized testing facility. The medical screening is paid for by MSC. In order to be hired, applicants must be found Fit for Hire by our MSC Medical Office. STEP 9. New Employee Orientation: Once found Fit for Hire, you’ll be scheduled for New Employee Orientation (NEO) in Norfolk, VA. Upon arrival some positions will require applicants to pass an English Language Competency Test. On your first day, you’ll complete new hire paperwork and be officially employed by MSC. This class runs for 4-5 days and consists of the following subjects: Government Employee Paperwork Security Medical Employee Relations Legal – Standards of Conduct Benefits Placement of Vessels Wages Manning Equal Employment Opportunity STEP 10. Additional Training: Upon completion of NEO, all newly hired CIVMARs attend mandatory training sessions for 4-6 weeks at the MSC training in Freehold, NJ or San Diego, CA. STEP 11. Ship Assignment: After completing NEO, newly hired CIVMARs are given either an East Coast or West Coast shipboard assignment from their Marine Placement Specialist.
