Spring/Summer 2016 Tina Turner CEO
There were lots of tears and even more laughter when colleagues, friends and family said a fond farewell at a tea party at the Hospice, as Karen Crawshaw, Chief Executive Officer retired after twenty-six years at the Hospice. Karen began her nursing career at Dewsbury School of Nursing in 1979. Apart from a few years in Leeds, Wales and Wigan gaining valuable experience, Karen spent the rest of her career in palliative care nursing. In 1990 she joined the newly opened Wakefield Hospice as a parttime staff nurse working mostly night duty. As her family grew up she moved to full time days, to ward sister, to manager, to director of patient services until in 2012 she became the Hospice‘s first Chief Executive Officer. Over those twenty-six years Karen has been instrumental in ensuring Wakefield Hospice remained at the forefront as Hospice based palliative care services evolved nationally. The people of Wakefield are lucky indeed to have had such a bold visionary at the helm. As those of you who have visited the Hospice will know, the changes have been enormous. In 2000 the Hospice doubled its size under her guidance; day therapy expanded and now offers a range of services. Beautifully furnished, the Hospice
newsletter The Hospice Board of Trustees, Staff and Volunteers are delighted to welcome Mrs Tina Turner to Wakefield Hospice. Tina joins us from The University Hospitals of Morcambe Bay Trust where she was a Divisional General Manager. Prior to this Tina was employed for two and a half years in the Chief Executive position at the Earl of Mountbatten Hospice on the Isle of Wight before leaving to marry and relocate to the mainland. Tina, who will take up the post of Chief Executive in May, has a background in Social Work and has extensive
is a home from home, a place of peace and calm and also of smiles and fun – much like Karen herself! As you will know, in order to provide all its services the Hospice successfully raises over £3 million per year thanks to the support of the good people and businesses in the Wakefield area. Helen Knowles, Director of Fundraising is constantly thinking up imaginative ways of raising money. As Helen says, she has an excellent working relationship with Karen – Helen raises the money and Karen spends it! But to be fair, Karen has raised some of her own; one of the most memorable being when she abseiled down the side of Wakefield Cathedral in her killer heels, raising over £400. She has also successfully bid for a number of improvement and development grants from national bodies.
managerial experience of working at board level in private and public sector organisations as well as in the Third Sector. Tina who lives near Wigan is the mother of five young adult children and takes an active interest in parish and community group work. We wish Tina every happiness and success in her appointment and are looking forward to working with her and to meeting future challenges together.
A caring and skilled nurse to her core, Karen has ensured the standards of care offered to patients and their families are second to none. She has provided sound leadership enabling her talented team to offer top class care. The Hospice, under Karen’s guidance consistently more than meets the standards required by all regulatory bodies. She has also had regional and national roles within the Hospice movement and her knowledge and insight has influenced palliative care over the years.
Karen sums up her career more simply – she feels very privileged to have been allowed to share the journeys of so many patients and their families. And to all of them she is grateful. Well, now it’s time for her to move to a new phase of her life. I think I can speak for everyone whose life she has touched to say farewell, good luck and know that yours has been a job well done. Thank you, Karen. Jan Firth (Trustee)

Wakefield Hospice 25th Anniversary Conference On the 14th October last year the hospice held a conference at the Unity Works in Wakefield. This was a full day event, entitled “Wakefield Hospice 25 years of Choices?” The aim of the conference was to inspire both health and social care professionals to consider choices for end of life care for patients and their significant others.
“A really informative conference, very thought provoking” “Excellent day, it has given me some ideas to take back into practice” “The experience of the service user was extremely useful” “Every part of the conference was relevant, informative and interesting”
At the event, we had a number of national and regional speakers that included a speech from Simon Chapman, the Director of Policy, Intelligence & Public Affairs for the National Council for Palliative Care & Dying Matters Coalition. Other presentations included; “What is currently happening?” “Hospice care into the future” and “Maintaining dignity and choice for patients at the end of life.” The day concluded with an expert panelist discussion/ debate on “Do people change their minds about their preferred place of care when faced with the reality of dying?” With a total of 108 attendees, the conference was a great success for the Hospice. When asked to share their thoughts and opinions on the day, we received some very positive remarks from attendees:

Our 25th anniversary year has come to an end and it seems fitting to thank our fantastic volunteers for supporting us through this significant milestone, as they have for many others. Volunteer team from Lloyds Bank
Volunteers have continued in their steadfast efforts to sort donations, serve customers, be on hand at events, keep the hospice environment a friendly and welcoming place to be and generally be an invaluable resource for all our staff, patients and their families. A conservative estimate of the monetary value that our regular volunteers give through their collective efforts is in excess of £650,000. An impressive figure in anyone’s book.
Our supporters from the business community once again stepped forward to offer team days, taking on bigger tasks than can normally be achieved in a single day. They came to our warehouse and were surprised at the volume and efficiency of the sorting operation. They came to our gardens and felt satisfied that they had made special spaces tidy and accessible for patients and their visitors. They also turned up at events, providing much needed manpower and enabling us to raise as much cash as possible. In cash value terms, their visits amounted to a figure approaching £16,000. We are working more closely with the DWP and Jobcentres than ever before, offering placements to those who are not in work but feel they would like to make a real difference to our charity. We have seen great benefits from the hours

My Hospice Experience “I was diagnosed with cancer in June 2014 and it literally turned my life upside-down. In spite of major surgery, the cancer was quick to return and I had to give up work. I lost my home and car, faced financial insecurity and this in turn led to extreme stress and pressure. My GP introduced me to Wakefield Hospice and I was surprised at the level of help and support that was available. On a purely practical level, a social worker was able to help me sort out benefits and eventually access my Fire Service pension. She also helped me to put services in place for me and my elderly mother, who lives with me and also suffers serious conditions. On a more personal level, being able to talk to staff and fellow patients in the Day Therapy Unit, helped me get my head round the situation I found myself in – after all, I had gone through major surgery only to discover the cancer was back. I was able to have complementary
therapies including reiki and relaxation, and there were other outlets such as arts and crafts, all of which helped to take my mind off my everyday worries.
can do on a daily basis to enjoy life.‘ ‘Forget yesterday and live life today’ – very good advice from staff and other patients. Different things are now more important in my life: companionship, sharing good times, dealing with practical things like making a Will and planning for end-oflife care. I know if things get too difficult, I would like to go into the Hospice as an in-patient rather than have mum try and cope.
Taking my pension lump sum really took the financial pressure off and I’ve made a start on a small ‘bucket list’ which includes a car, bike, holiday and an allsinging/dancing TV. I have also been able to concentrate on making choices –about my funeral, care provision for my elderly mother, future care plans for myself and even choices about what I
they are able to give. In turn, we have been able to provide a meaningful experience of a workplace which prospective employers will regard favourably. At our 25th Anniversary Conference, not only did volunteers assist with the planning and practicalities of the day, some attended the event itself to keep abreast of trends and developments in the field of palliative care. Such is their passion and enthusiasm for helping to deliver a first class service to the local community.
The first week of June is National Volunteers’ Week and we were blessed with sunshine at our Hospice Garden Party, an event to say thank you for everyone’s efforts. Family and friends were invited and there were stalls, entertainers, raffles and complimentary refreshments for our special guests. It was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion and one we hope to repeat.
Sometimes, in conversation, I feel like I’m boasting about having cancer – “look at me, with this big bad disease.” But NO, I’m not proud to have cancer, but I AM proud of how I cope on a day to day basis, and considerable thanks for this must go to the Hospice. The help, both practical and emotional has been invaluable.” Stephen Kaye
The depth of our gratitude to all our volunteers is enormous. They are committed, loyal, cope with changes of all kinds and are the best ambassadors for our services that we could hope for. Many have sadly experienced Hospice care at first hand and feel a very strong connection to the cause. We will always be reliant on them to support us and maintain our reputation. Whatever they do and whether this is a regular or one-off activity, we know we have a priceless resource in our volunteers. For that we are extremely grateful. Anyone interested in sharing the care by volunteering should contact the Volunteer Services Office, 01924 213900, check our website or enquire at any Hospice premises.

New Director of Clinical Services appointed to the hospice Alison Harwood has been working at the hospice since July 2015. She qualified as a nurse in 1990 in Birmingham and moved to Yorkshire a year later when she was appointed as the first respiratory nurse specialist in West Yorkshire. Following this she has worked in several hospital trusts in the area caring for patients with chronic lung disease. She then moved to Bradford as a Macmillan Lead Nurse for Lung Cancer. At Calderdale and Huddersfield she was the nursing lead for cancer care and was involved in the inspection of cancer services across the UK for the National Cancer Peer Review process. Prior to coming to work for Wakefield Hospice she was a lecturer in end of life care at the University of Bradford. Having lived in Wakefield for 25 years Alison is very proud to now be associated with the quality care that the hospice provides for people in the local area. She is determined to ensure that anyone accessing inpatient or day unit services can be assured that they will always get the best possible treatment and support at all times.
Meet our Chaplain us, especially Canon Tony Macpherson and Bishop Tony Robinson, for the words that they shared with us.
“I started work as the Chaplain at the hospice in March 2015, having been a vicar in Harrogate for the previous ten years. It was really interesting starting during the 25th anniversary year. A few weeks after starting, I took part in the Thanksgiving Service at Wakefield Cathedral. This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the previous quarter of a century and all that the hospice had done for the local community. It was also a time to look forward with hope for all that will happen as the hospice continues to care for those at a vulnerable time and their families. We were grateful to all at the Cathedral who hosted
As a newcomer, it was wonderful to meet so many people who had benefited from the care, or who had contributed in various ways to the work of the hospice. It was encouraging to see the wide support the hospice receives and the affection people have for it. One of the things many people say when they first have contact with a hospice is how pleasantly surprised they are by the place. Often people fear it will be a morbid and depressing place. Yes, many people are going through real and painful struggles. However, the emphasis is on quality of life, and trying to ease the pain (physical, psychological and spiritual) where possible. At that service, and in the year since, I have seen and heard numerous examples of when the hospice has been able to provide this. Over the past year I have had the
joy and privilege of taking part in various fundraising activities. It has been good for me too as I have re-discovered running. In 2015 I took part in the Wakefield Hospice 10K and the Great North Run. (I also grew a “Movember” moustache in November. As I wouldn’t usually have a moustache, this amused some people, although it wasn’t to my wife’s personal taste!! ) On April 24th this year I will be taking part in the London Marathon. I ran the marathon ten years ago and, as a personal challenge, I want to beat my previous time. I find I get a bit stiffer after the long training runs than I remember a decade ago! It’s a privilege to be raising money for this wonderful place, where I have great admiration for all the staff and volunteers. I am very grateful to all those who have supported. If you would like to do so, I can be sponsored online at www.virginmoneygiving. com/DarrenMcClintock.” Many thanks, Darren McClintock (Chaplain)

Spring/Summer 2016
Staff and volunteers celebrated 25 years with some incredible and creative themed displays all designed to attract customers into our shops. We launched our Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter collections with fantastic reviews from our customers. We embraced the popular TV drama Downton Abbey with beautiful table displays reflecting the grandeur of that era. The Halloween inspired windows could have come straight out of a Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing horror film. We then paid tribute and remembered those who bravely fought for our country with a poignant elegant poppy display. To celebrate World Book Day we created our very own page turner with a dress made from the pages of The Devil Wears Prada. Following trends we introduced our very own Black Friday event where staff and volunteers worked from 7am to 7pm. The day proved to be a huge success and one we will repeat this year.
A huge thank you is owed to everyone who has volunteered, shopped or donated to our retail outlets.
Business Buddies Supporting us in so many ways Many local companies support the hospice by becoming a member of our Business Buddy scheme. In return for supporting us financially, they receive various benefits; PR opportunities, their details on our website; and invitations to regular, FREE networking meetings where they can meet and explore business opportunities with other local companies.
Some businesses have particular services they can provide – for example, one of our longstanding Business Buddies, Debbie Melton of Red Media (Europe) Ltd, recently provided us with hospicebranded lapel badges to promote membership of the scheme, then followed this up with attractive name badges for our networking meetings.
Once businesses become involved, we find they are keen to help us in a variety of ways. Some volunteer at our events, some take up sporting challenges and raise sponsorship through family and friends, some attend our Sporting Dinner or other black-tie celebrations.
If YOUR business would like to know more about the ways in which you can support our work, contact Keeley Harrison, fundraising manger, on 01924 213900 or e-mail: keeley.harrison@ wakefieldhospice.co.uk Debbie Melton

High Ropes for the Hospice As a special event to celebrate the hospice’s 25th anniversary the 299 Parachute Squadron TA Unit based in Wakefield ran an abseil down the western tower of Wakefield Cathedral on Saturday 3 October.
Family Care Nurse, Cathryn Hartley
All the participants were very brave as they first had to climb the 157 narrow and winding steps leading to the tower of the tallest church in Yorkshire where they were met by TA personnel to be harnessed and trained on how to use the ropes to lower themselves from the tower’s edge. Our Family Care Nurse, Cathryn Hartley and Sarah Nayler our Bereavement Support Co-ordinator both successfully completed the abseil, Sarah said “I took part in the abseil to raise funds for the Hospice and to recognise how brave our patients and loved ones are when we meet them on their journey..… and also because it was really exciting!” Each abseiler was asked to raise sponsorship of £250 but many raised a great deal more, in total raising £12,700. Thank you to everyone that took part.
Putting for Pounds Our annual golf tournament is our longest running event also celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015 and was held at Wakefield Golf Club in June raising £14,094 for the hospice. As a special treat we were joined by David Edwards who provided entertaining on course commentary during the competition and a fantastic trick shot show. At the prize giving the winning team from
Coca-Cola Enterprises were awarded with the George Tagg trophy, Lofthouse Gate were the runners up and event sponsor Ashleigh Signs took third place. Well done to all the teams. We would like to express our sincere thanks to our sponsors Ashleigh Signs and IJS Developments, also Wakefield Golf Club for allowing us to use their fantastic facilities for the 25th year.

SPORTING DINNER
27 Hospice runners took on the iconic Great North Run to raise as much as they possibly can for patient care. The runners combined sponsorship is in excess of £15,000 which is an amazing achievement. This is one of the largest amounts we have received from our runners in recent years so well done to everyone involved. We once again have 25 places for the 2016 Great North Run and would welcome applications from anyone wishing to take on this iconic challenge. The largest half marathon event in the world is a must do for runners of all ages and abilities.
The past 6 months have been dominated by the Rugby World Cup and more recently the 6 Nations. To celebrate this, Wakefield Hospice organised a Sporting Dinner. The guests were entertained by rugby greats Zinzan Brooke and Brian Moore who regaled amusing stories from the past and even debated recent topics about tackling in schools. The real humour was left to the very capable comedian, Josh Daniels, and the incomparable Malcolm Lord. Special thanks goes to the sponsors Chadwick Lawrence, Jolliffe Cork, YTL and PMG.

One of the paint stations was hosted by Wakefield Wildcats and players from the team joined Daddy Cool to splatter runners.
Amy Garcia from BBC Look North started the runners off in a colourful burst of powder. Runners then chose either a 3K or 5K route on which they were splattered by paint stations.
The challenge has raised in excess of £24,000 for patent care through both ticket sales and sponsorship.

Around 2,000 runners joined us for the 21st annual 10K road race and 1K mini run to raise vital funds for Wakefield Hospice on Sunday 3 April. The annual 10K Road Race and 1K Mini Run is set to raise more than £55,000 for patient care. More than enough to fund the entire hospice for one week - supporting patients and their families living with an end of life diagnosis. This year’s race was started by local runner Evie Brailsford, who became the face of this year’s Wakefield 10K appearing on leaflets, bus adverts and more after taking part in last year’s event. Evie ran the 10K again this year wearing running number 1. Sportive 2015 Taking on The Dark Peak … The 2015 Wakefield Sportive: The Dark Peak saw more than 350 cyclists raising funds for Wakefield Hospice in September. An extreme cycling challenge in its 3rd year saw brave cyclists take on a 48 mile or 72 mile route taking on climbs featured in the 2014 Tour de France stage held in Yorkshire. Sponsors West Yorkshire Windows joined us with a large team of cyclists and were motivated and coached personally by former Olympic Gold
Medallist Yvonne McGregor who started all the cyclists off on their adventure. The challenge in total raised over £9,000 for patient care. In 2016 we are planning a new cycling adventure which will see a team of cyclists pedal from Wakefield to Roubaix. We know this unique opportunity to take on the infamous Paris – Roubaix classic challenge starting and ending in Wakefield will be popular with our loyal cyclists who are each year raising thousands of pounds for Wakefield Hospice.

The ongoing work of the Hospice would not be possible without voluntary donations from local people and the business community – annual running costs are now well in excess of £3m and central funding amounts to less than 30%. We are proud to stand alongside this charity: Barclays’ colleagues have supported the hospice firstly through being members of their Business Buddy scheme, and latterly Barclays’ colleagues were pleased to be invited to become a specially selected Hospice Advocate. “In 1991 our founder John Monaghan, lost his battle with cancer. During his illness he spent time in Wakefield Hospice in its opening year where he received palliative care and we received kindness and support in equal measure. This experience created a link with the Hospice that has grown and strengthened over the last 25 years. Inspired by our experience and understanding of the vital role of the Hospice in our community we have, as a family and business made every effort to support Hospice events and take on as many challenges as possible. Since her retirement from the role of Managing Director, Marilyn Monaghan has walked The Great Wall of China, trekked the Inca Trail to the ruins of Machu Pichu, conquered the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro and baked over a thousand cupcakes fundraising in the Hospices name. As a business, over the years we have united with our workforce to raise funds and in 2015, the anniversary year, we pledged to match any fundraising events for the Hospice. They didn’t let us down, putting in a team for the 10K, completing a ‘Tough Mudder’ and eating numerous cakes, all adding up to them raising over £4,000 last year alone.”

The Tree of Life – Pete and Vicki’s story Over the years the Tree of Life has become an integral part of our garden. We recently rededicated the Tree, and with new lights now illuminating its branches at dusk it’s now a real feature all year round. Our grateful thanks to HS Electrical Services for lighting up the Tree and to the Hospice Chaplain Darren McClintock for his thoughtful rededication. Pete Fisher is one of the many supporters who has enjoyed the special setting of the Tree and chosen to dedicate one of its leaves to a loved one. Here he explains more about the Tree in his own words. “I came across the Tree of Life when my wife Vicki was a patient in Wakefield Hospice. I used to take a break when someone else was with her, and I’d wander round the garden for a few minutes. I thought the Tree was a lovely piece of sculpture so I asked about it in reception and found out I could dedicate a leaf. I told Vicki about the Tree and although she wasn’t mobile enough to go down there, she could see it from her room. Having a leaf was her idea. I dedicated a leaf to Vicki each year for three years, as I wanted a leaf
for myself and one each for my two children. To me the Tree of Life is a peaceful place. You can just go and sit underneath it, to reflect and contemplate. I came back to the Hospice quite a number of times and I felt relaxed when I was there. I’ve supported the Tree of Life and now I make a regular donation as I like to try and give back what’s been given. I know it’s hard work raising
the money to run the Hospice and I could never repay what they did for Vicki. It’s a very special place and the staff are unbelievable – we got excellent care.” If you would like to support the Hospice and remember someone special by dedicating a leaf on the Tree of Life, visit www.wakefieldhospice.org/tree or call the fundraising team on 01924 213900.
A very special gift Wakefield Hospice has been providing end-of-life care for more than quarter of a century, and we want to continue to be here for future generations. An important way of ensuring this is through legacies left to the Hospice in people’s Wills. These very special gifts play a significant part in ensuring we are here for another 25 years. Jean Masters has been volunteering for the Hospice for 26 years, and says, “The surroundings and the care are second to none for people with end-oflife illnesses. And there’s no charge, of course. So it’s important that local people keep supporting the Hospice as they do, to keep it running. You get satisfaction knowing that you’ve helped.” A new member of our fundraising team, Clare Kemsley, will be raising awareness about how people can support the Hospice with a legacy. Clare says, ‘We’re deeply grateful to everyone who considers helping the Hospice in this way. Anyone can remember the Hospice in their Will and every gift, large or small, will make a difference.’ Find out more by visiting www.wakefieldhospice.org/legacies, phoning Clare on 01924 213900 or emailing

Lottery - The ‘No Losers Lottery’ In February 2015 we re-launched our lottery and became the ‘Wakefield Hospice Unity Lottery’ which was to reduce our administration costs, increase our members odds of winning a prize AND increase the weekly jackpot to a whopping £25,000! A year on, we are delighted to report that this move has raised an incredible £50,000 for Wakefield Hospice – which will have funded a full time and part time nurse at the hospice, providing care for our patients and their families through a difficult time in their lives. In this time 1,798 people have scooped a cash prize, ranging between £1,000 and £5. Wakefield Hospice benefits from EVERY membership that is taken out and although we are part of the wider Unity lottery group you ONLY support Wakefield Hospice by joining us. We also promise never to share your details with any other charity. Please help us to raise more funds this year by joining today, either through our website www.wakefieldhospice.org, by calling 01924 213900 or emailing
[email protected]. It costs just £1 per week to play, the more people who join, the more we can raise for our patients – even if you don’t win a cash prize, you can’t lose knowing that the proceeds are going to our cause!

Spring/Summer 2016
Sponsor a candle at Lights on the Lake We’re delighted to announce that Lights on the Lake will be held at Pugneys Country Park on Saturday 11 June this year. Thank you to everyone who helped make the event a success last summer and gave their feedback to make it even better this year. The event is an occasion to remember loved ones and celebrate the work of Wakefield Hospice, where we are asking people to sponsor a candle. You can attach a personal message to your candle before it is floated on rafts on the lake. If you can’t come along on the night, you can still take part as we can light your candle for you. Patients and their families often tell us the Hospice is the light that has guided them through a very dark time in their lives. Kay took part in last year’s event and says, ‘I sponsored two candles – one for my Dad who died in the Hospice 21 years ago, and one for a very
treasured volunteer. I liked the symbolism of lighting a candle for each of them, and the Hospice is very dear to my heart because they looked after my Dad when they first opened.’ Last summer more than 1,400 candles were sponsored, raising over £17k for the Hospice’s work. With your support we hope to repeat and build on that success. Every penny makes a difference in enabling us to continue our work – our grateful thanks go to every supporter who helps to ensure the Hospice is here to care for local families. Thank you to Minster Law for sponsoring the event.
To sponsor a candle or find out more about the event, visit www.wakefieldhospice.org/lake or call the fundraising team on 01924 213900.
