Keratoconus & CXL: Answers to the Most Common Patient Questions How do I prepare for the CXL procedure?
Are both eyes treated at the same time?
On the day of the procedure, avoid eye makeup, eat a light meal, and stay hydrated. Arrange a ride home, as you shouldn’t drive for a few days. Follow all post-op care instructions carefully.
Only one eye will be treated at a time. If both eyes have progressive keratoconus, the decision on how soon the other eye will be treated is best left for your doctor.
Does vision improve after the CXL procedure?
Are there any side effects of the CXL procedure?
The CXL procedure is not the same as LASIK. It is undertaken to slow or stop the progression of keratoconus. Very rarely does it change the vision or make it better. In most cases patients have to continue to wear prescription glasses or contact lenses for their vision even after the CXL procedure.
Mild irritation, watering, or a gritty feeling is common on the day of treatment and usually eases within 24–48 hours. Use tear lubricants for 2–4 months to relieve dryness. Serious side effects are rare.
