My room mate told me you can go TAD (temporary additional duty) from your duties as an active duty Marine (I don't know if this applies to all branches, I assume it does though) to be a civilian and go through a state police's (any state police?) academy. Is this true? Is there a catch?

MARINE CORPS SEPARATION & RETIREMENT MANUAL Paragraph 6405.1. Early release for Education. Rewritten. GCMCA's may authorize particularly deserving enlisted Marines to be released from active duty prior to expiration of active service for the purpose of pursuing their education via college or a vocational/technical school. A vocational school is to include any state or local police department, fire department, or state, city, or county service agency that would require the Marine to attend a fulltime course of instruction lasting 3 months or more. The educational institution must be accredited as specified in par 6405.3. This program is applicable to all enlisted personnel except: Note: Enlisted Marines requesting early release for education are eligible for promotion consideration, selection, and promotion. Draft versions of this Manual had stated they were not eligible.

I'm not sure about the Marines but while I was in the Army i'd seen people get a 6 month "school drop". Which means you just go to school for 6 months instead of reporting everyday. while, I never saw anyone go to a police academy on a school drop, I would think it could be used in such a way. Beings that police academies are accredited by VA.

Many Moons ago (about 11 years) there were a couple Air Foece SP's from Dover AFB who got to go on Permissive TDY to the DE State Police Academy. They justified it by saying the SP squadron needed some people fluent in DE laws (Scam...) but good on them for slipping it through

Is this true? Is there a catch? It's possible. Back in the day when I was on active duty as an MP, I got permissive TAD and went to the NC state BLET (state police certification) course. I learned more about LE than in all the military police courses combined.

I am a Police Recruiter. It's Tuesday night, this week I have made recruiting trips to Fort Bragg, Camp Lejeune, and MCAS New River. Last Friday I was on MCAS Cherry Point.

Gentlemen, remember there is a war. Most of the former programs are no longer used. Last week one of my applicants for our July academy called to say the Army has stop-loss him, he will not separate from the Army in June. He will be in the Army until Dec 2009. I spoke to a Corpsman today who is to separate from the Navy in July 2008, he has his letter for IRR call-up in October 2008. Most of the Marines and soldiers I speak to are not attending TAP 180 days prior to separation as per Dod regulation. They often have just returned from Afghanistan and Iraq. It is not unusual to speak to service members at a TAP who will separate in a week or two. It's hard for my Department to process an application in our goal of 12 weeks, and give a conditional letter of intent 90 days prior to beginning terminal leave. That said, in NC it is possible to attend a BLET, day or night course at a community college and get certified as a law enforcement officer. We had a number of reserve officers who were active Army. Hard to do that gig at Fort Bragg post 9/11.

I am a Active Duty Marine stationed in DC and I will be using the USMC Early release for eduction program to attend the Academy in July with my Org EAS being Oct. The academy starts right at the 90 day mark that the order says is the max amount of days you are allowed to take so I am lucky to have a chain of command that evens entertains this idea. However I am lucky enough to be SSgt with my replacement already on Deck and work for a MGySgt who supports my career choice to leave after 11 yrs and move onto bigger and better things. So even having this option for me to use is something I feel I am very forunate to take advantage of. If your SNCO's and Officers support you as my 1stSgt and Capt do it make it a whole lot easier. However nothing is set in stone. When the Col get my package and it has the "Stamp" of approval then I feel at ease about having success with this program. So the progam is out there for you to use. I have the order in a PDF file on my computer so if you would like to see it and read 1st hand what is required and needed let me know. I will help in any way I can.

I'm going to give it a try, although I don't have much faith in my battalion going for it.
