In the last ten years there has been a major transformation in how English is taught in India. Students are no longer expected to simply learn grammar and do well on written exams, today schools need to develop communicators who can express themselves clearly and confidently, share their opinions and contribute to the academic or professional settings they will find themselves in. One common issue in many classrooms continues to be that students may learn English, yet are often afraid to speak it. To bridge the gap, a number of institutions in Andhra Pradesh have installed structured language lab in schools that allow communication to be an everyday part of the student’s learning experience. This has also been a significant factor in turning English classes into environments that foster students’ confidence in communicating.
Why Do Many Students Learn English but Still Hesitate to Speak? In a regular English classroom, teachers will teach grammar, writing skills and how to use a textbook while building academic knowledge. To develop fluency, students need constant exposure to listening, opportunities for guided speaking and time to repeat and refine their speech. If a student has listened to lessons but has not had opportunity to speak, he/she may not be confident to speak when asked. A student with a lack of confidence often carries this with them and then has trouble in job interviews, giving presentations and being ready for future. As schools are more aware they are beginning to realize that practice time is critical
to
developing
communication
skills
and
not

on
traditional/regular methods.
How Are Schools Addressing This Challenge Today? Institutions which are looking at the future have begun using English language lab in school so that their students can engage in the English through active participation. This Language Lab is different compared to traditional classrooms in a number of ways:

•
Individualized practice of listening
•
Structured pronunciation activities
•
Structured speaking activities
Because of these English classes are more interactive and involve active participation by students rather than a lecture type of class.
A School’s Experience with Language Lab Implementation One example of this shift can be seen at Montessori’s English Medium High School, where educators wanted students to go beyond textbook learning and develop real communication ability. As teachers began to notice that while many students understood the materials presented in class very few were willing to speak up in class, they also began to notice that many of the students made errors in pronouncing the words. Additionally, students who were shy and reluctant to participate had very few opportunities to practice their speaking skills. To create opportunities for students to speak without adding to the teacher’s workload, a structured language lab software for schools was implemented. The goal is to provide each student with regular opportunities to listen, practice and enhance their speaking abilities.

What Changes Did Teachers Notice After Implementation? After regular language lab sessions, teachers observed several improvements: •
Students were more likely to engage in English learning activities on an ongoing basis.
•
Students ability to do phonetics activities became stronger due to their exposure to listening exercises.
•
Less confident students became more confident in responding to the teacher's questions.
•
The level of classroom participation increased significantly.
Teachers found tracking their student's academic progress to be much easier and giving the students direct support rather than trying to manage all of the students at once. This english language lab in school did not replace classroom teaching, it strengthened the teaching process.
How the English Language Lab Software Actually Supports Daily Teaching Having good infrastructure and laboratory setup is important, but the biggest impact happens from how software is being used in the classroom. The English Language

software
acts
as

delivering
structured communication practice. Rather than being limited to explanations from teachers, the software allows students to participate in each session's activities involving listening, speaking and understanding independently of their teacher.
How Teachers Can Use the Software in Classrooms The platform is designed to help teachers with: •
Assign lessons that include structured listening exercises.
•
Facilitate guided pronunciation practice.
•
Evaluate individual student's speaking ability.

•
Monitor progress with built-in evaluation tools.
•
Provide targeted feedback based on individual student needs.
With this capability, English sessions can now be more than just theoretical but practice based learning experiences.
How Students Benefit from Using the Software Regularly From a student’s perspective, the software provides: •
Regular contact with accurate pronunciation and sentence formations
•
Practice in speaking without worries about errors
•
Interactions that help improve fluency over time
•
A clear plan from before to after and from just hearing English to speaking confidently.
Students learn how to use English actively instead of memorizing it, leading to long-term confidence building.
Can This Language Lab Software Help Shy or Weak Students Improve? Yes, in fact they often benefit the most.

This language lab in school has a structured environment in which students can practice language skills before they speak in front of others. This helps to lessen the fear of making mistakes and to develop self-confidence as the student improves. As students practice their language skills and can hear improvement with their skills via repetition, their hesitation and fear naturally decrease. With continued participation what was once a challenge becomes a regular part of the student's daily activities. The majority of teachers view language labs not only as a resource for teaching but also as a way to increase self-confidence.
Trusted by Schools Across Andhra Pradesh While the success at Montessori’s English Medium High School highlights the real impact of english language lab in schools, it is not just an isolated example. Several other institutions across Andhra Pradesh including JMJ English Medium School (Kurnool), Naveena Vidyanikethan High School (Guntur), C.P.R.Z.P.H.S

School (Velagaleru), St.Mary's English Medium High School (Kadapa) and many more educational institutions have also adopted structured English learning solutions to strengthen student communication skills. In most cases, language labs in these schools are no longer being used just for English class, but also for practicing their presentations, using listening exercises and receiving communication training. Extending the purpose of language labs helps students to reduce their reliance on text book based learning to more practical areas of language fluency to enable them to be successful in academic settings, pass competitive examinations and develop 21st century workplace readiness skills. Now that many educational institutions throughout the region have come to understand the importance of developing strong communication skills, digital language labs are now quickly becoming something all prominent educational institutions should have to enhance their programs versus only being an optional enhancement.
Why Are More Schools in the Region (Andhra Pradesh) Adopting Language Labs? The adoption of communication focused learning environments is growing steadily. Numerous institutions within the state have implemented this language lab and have noted: •
More engaged students
•
Improved ability to pronounce words
•
Improved listening skills
•
Improved capability to give presentations
With the continued growth of this system and improvement in technology, we see that education is shifting from "delivery of content" to "development of skills." The majority of educational institutions recognize that a student's ability to communicate affects his/her academic success and career readiness.

What Does This Mean for the Future of English Education? Education today is shifting toward outcome-based learning. Previously, schools were rated solely upon performance i.e. exam results. However, schools now receive ratings based upon whether their students have developed effective communication and collaboration skills. Schools receive ratings determined by how well students are communicating and expressing themselves. This english language lab software provides schools the ability to connect the student’s acquired academic knowledge with their real-life language skills, therefore students can practice in the environment that was designed for them to begin developing their real-life English skills. As this approach of education continues to expand, the expectations of schools will be that all students will receive an education that focuses on communication-based learning and teachers and parents will expect students to communicate in the English language.
