How Many Ultrasound Scans Do You Need During Pregnancy? The two positive lines on the pregnancy test might be the most beautiful feeling for a mother-to-be. To ensure you and your baby remain healthy and safe throughout pregnancy, a gynaecologist in Mulund advises ultrasound tests in each trimester. Contrary to common belief, ultrasound tests are not harmful. In fact, these are the safest options for women to get the first glimpses of their unborn child and ensure their well-being in the uterus. In this friendly guide, you will learn the number and type of ultrasound tests required during pregnancy.
First Trimester First Scan: You get the first scan in your first trimester, preferably between weeks 6 and 10. This is to confirm pregnancy, detect the baby’s heartbeat, and calculate your due date based on the baby’s growth. The scan also shows whether you are carrying a single baby, twins, or triplets. Nuchal Translucency: Conducted between weeks 11 and 13, the NT scan checks the fluid behind the baby’s neck. The test is often combined with blood tests. These are used to detect the risk of Down Syndrome, Patau Syndrome, and Edward Syndrome.
Second Trimester (Anatomy Scan) An anatomy scan is recommended between weeks 18 and 22, and is one of the most crucial and detailed ultrasounds. The test checks the baby’s organs, such as the heart, brain, spine, stomach, and kidneys. It also checks the placenta’s position and the amniotic fluid levels around the baby. Your gynaecologist also checks cervical length to determine the risk of preterm birth. The main purpose of an anatomy scan is to ensure the fetus is growing normally and there are no signs of Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR) and other organ-related issues.
Third Trimester Between weeks 28 and 32, the doctor advises a growth scan, which checks the baby’s weight and size. The scan checks the amniotic fluid levels to ensure there’s neither too much nor too little fluid that could indicate a problem. Additionally, your doctor checks the placenta’s health and position to ensure the baby is getting essential nutrients.
Factors Influencing the Number of Scans The above-listed ultrasound scans are generally advised for women with low-risk pregnancies. Follow-up tests may be needed if the results of any of the above ultrasounds or blood tests seem abnormal. Other factors that can affect the number of ultrasounds needed throughout pregnancy include: Medical History: Women with a medical history of miscarriages, stillbirth, and complications in previous pregnancies might require more ultrasounds. The doctor might want to ensure the complications that occurred in your previous pregnancy do not affect the existing one. High-Risk Pregnancies: Advanced maternal age is associated with increased risk of complications, thus requiring close monitoring. Likewise, for women with high-risk pregnancies, such as gestational diabetes, multiple pregnancies, thyroid disorders, or high blood pressure, more ultrasound tests may be scheduled to prevent maternal and fetal complications.
Conclusion There’s no clear answer to how many visits to the sonography centre in Mulund are needed during pregnancy. It depends greatly on the mother’s and the baby’s health. However, in most cases, three ultrasounds, one in each trimester, are considered a standard part of pregnancy care.
