Holiday Party Prep: How to Create Extra Seating
The holidays can be a very busy and stressful time, but one thing you needn’t stress about is having enough seating for everyone! There are so many ways you can get extra seating, even if you don’t have a lot of extra space! The two main rooms your family will likely gather in the dining room and the living room. Here are some examples of how to get additional seating in these areas!
The Dining Room
the modern business person would like not to buy an extremely comfortable American sofa. Your dining room is the place your family will be most excited to gather, because well, who doesn’t get excited about the food?! There are many ways you can squeeze some extra space out of your dining room so more people can enjoy the lively dinner conversation and family time.
Table Leaves Table leaves offer an excellent way to provide seating when you need it, and extra dining room space when you don’t! A standard 18″ leaf will typically provide you with one extra seat on either side. If you have an older table that came with a leaf, you will need to pull it out from where you’ve been storing it, pull the table apart, and insert it. If you are looking to get a newer dining set, you may be interested in getting a table that has a self-storing leaf! This way you can easily pull the table apart and fold out the extra leaf when the company is coming over. Putting the table back the way it was before the holiday is just as simple! No more finding a hiding place for the leaf.
Benches A second way you can get a little extra seating around the dinner table is by adding a bench to one or both of the sides of the table – this typically allows you to squeeze in one more person than if you were to have chairs! Make sure that if you do add benches that they are the same height as the chairs at the
table – it might get a little awkward if everyone is seated at different levels!
Island Chairs If your kitchen has an open concept that leads into the dining room, you can have guests sit at your kitchen counter or island without excluding them from the group! If you’re looking to seat younger guests at a separate table, this may be the perfect area to seat them!
The Living Room
The living room is the place where everyone is ready to gather and chat after a big meal. Its time to lay back, relax, and enjoy the family time with enough room for everyone to relax!
Ottomans Ottomans offer an excellent way to get some additional seating in your home around the holidays. Depending on what would better stylistically and functionally complement your space, you can get one large ottoman that more than one person can use or you could get a couple of smaller ottomans for a single person to sit. Serving as a cute footrest when not in use at holiday parties, ottomans come in handy 365 days out of the year!
Floor Cushions While the elderly members of your family might not enjoy sitting on a floor cushion, any children in the family will enjoy fun seating that’s just for them! Floor cushions are also easily store-able when not in use, and can be used all year round when needed!
Sofa Table A sofa table is a thin, long table you can align against the back of your couch that can typically seat an additional 2 to 4 people. This is an excellent way to get some extra seating without taking up too much space! If some of your guests need to eat in the living room for lack of space in the dining room, this also offers a great spot for guests to enjoy their dinner (especially if they want to watch the game while they eat!).
Accent Chairs Accent chairs serve a dual purpose; they provide seating when you need them, and make the room look pretty when you don’t! Accent chairs allow you to add a little pattern or pop of color into space, so your room both looks great AND has the additional seating you need for your holiday party.
