Heroic Bangladeshi Immigrant Officer Killed in Mass Shooting in Manhattan Skyscraper
On July 28, a tragic mass shooting in a Manhattan skyscraper claimed the lives of four people, including 36-year-old New York City Police Officer Didarul Islam. Islam, a heroic Bangladeshi immigrant, was described by New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch as a brave officer who gave his life in the line of duty while saving others.
The shooting occurred in a midtown office tower, where Islam was working a paid security detail. Despite the perilous situation, Islam’s actions were nothing short of heroic. He was credited with protecting New Yorkers and helping to prevent further loss of life. In a press conference on the evening of July 28, Mayor Adams spoke of Islam's bravery, saying, “He was saving lives, he was protecting New Yorkers. He loved this city.” Islam’s commitment to his community and his selfless dedication as a police officer highlighted his sense of duty, something he continued to uphold despite the tragic circumstances.
Islam, a three and a half-year veteran of the New York City Police Department, was married and had two young sons. His wife is also expecting their third child. Officer Islam’s sacrifice was a stark reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day. Police Commissioner Tisch paid tribute to the fallen officer, stating, “He put himself in harm's way. He made the ultimate sacrifice — shot in cold blood.” She highlighted the role Islam had in securing the building and protecting others during the shooting.
As of mid-2025, Islam's death adds to the list of officers who have died in the line of duty. According to preliminary data from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, excluding Islam, 42 officers from various levels of government and military service have lost their lives.
Officer Islam's courage and commitment to protecting others will forever be remembered by his family, his fellow officers, and the citizens of New York City. His legacy as a brave and compassionate officer continues to serve as an inspiration to law enforcement officers everywhere.
At New India Abroad, we honor Officer Islam's life, his service to his community, and the ultimate sacrifice he made in protecting others.
