5th International Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forum
FORUM REPORT „Making Olympic Principles Work in the Life of Youth“ Radstadt, 18th - 24th September 2005
IOC
WELCOME TO RADSTADT. Patrons of the Forum sent their greetings. From the Federal Government of Austria the Secretary of State for Sports Mag. Karl Schweitzer: Welcome to Austria! The international Committee Pierre de Coubertin has taken great efforts to keep up the memory and the merits of Pierre de Coubertin as renovator of the Olympic Games and as great educator for generations of sportsmen. The installation of Youth Forums in 1997 in two years intervals contribute an important part to this purpose. The organization of the 5th Forum in Austria is an incentive for further work in this fi eld. The very best wishes for a successful meeting and work of the participants at this special event at Radstadt.
The Head of the Salzburg Government Mag. Gabi Burgstaller: Welcome to all participants of the 5th Forum Salzburg was chosen as Austria`s candidate for the Olympic Winter Games 2014. We try very hard for this bid considering the organisation of Olympic Games a great challenge for a country not only to be a good host but also to gain the advantage of having many role models for our youth. I therefore appreciate it very much that the 5th International Youth Forum Pierre de Coubertin is taking place in the Province of Salzburg, the heart of Austria. Good luck and lasting memories of your stay.
The Mayor of Radstadt Mr. Josef Tagwercher: Welcome to Radstadt Radstadt as site of the 5th International Youth Forum is proud to host young students and their teachers from all over the world. Rich in culture and sports tradition our community is looking forward to meet the participants considering it a chance for better understanding and mutual respect among men. Good luck to all and a pleasant stay
The President of the Austrian Olympic Committee IOC Member Dr. Leo Wallner: Olympic Greetings On behalf of the Austrian Olympic Committee I am very pleased to welcome the more than one hundred young participants and their accompanying teachers to 5th International Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forum at Radstadt. Students from as far away as Australia, Kenya, or Estonia will work, to sports and discuss together and will be eager to learn from each other. I consider it very important to maintain the memory of Pierre de Coubertin and to keep in mind his enormous impact on reestablishment of modern Olympic Games as well as on sports educations. The 5th Forum certainly will be an essential contribution to this aim. I wish for the event great success.
FOREWORD. When we decided to produce a report of the 5th International Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forum we had three dominant reasons. First we wanted to have a souvenir for all those that had participated, a reminder of the days we spent together playing, talking, competing and having fun. Secondly it should be an information for all members of CIPC, an incentive maybe to install Coubertingymnasiums in their country and to participate next time. An information too for all students of Coubertin. Schools who had not or not yet the chance to take part in a Forum. And third we thought it would be a token of gratitude to all those who were engaged in the organization, in the many big and tiny tasks that make an event like this a success. 3
CONFIDENCE PREVAILED. THREE MEETINGS OF THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE. When in 2004 CIPC hesitated to continue the Forums Hermann Andrecs proposed to organize the next in Austria on a more modest level as the costs were concerned. The members of the general assembly agreed and the preparations could start. A small organizing committee met three times in all to secure preconditions for a smooth run of the 5th Forum. With the federal school hostel „Tandalier“ at Radstadt a place was found to house all participants as well as the accompanying teachers under one roof. A gym hall, a disco and outdoor sports facilities rounded the place of the old castle, so no transports for the activities were necessary except for the excursions. The real advantage of the place was the presence of a host school. BORG Radstadt, a federal senior high school, was a wonderful partner. In the first OC-meeting in October 2004 information prevailed as all members of the team did not know much about the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee (CIPC), about the Forums and their intentions, the former events and some other important items. However at this early stage of preparation there were a number of good ideas and many offers for support by the Head of BORG Radstadt Mario Sarcletti and his team. The second meeting in February 2005 was especially designed to clear all details of the program and of necessary steps for the realisation of the various tasks. A final meeting in May with the presence of Ines Nikolaus who had all the contacts with the participating schools and with the assisting teachers of the host school as well as with the new director of Tandalier Birgit Kleindienst served as a final check. Eva Zacsek from the Ministry of Education was integrated in the OC and took over the scretariat for the event. After these meetings Hermann Andrecs and Mario Sarcletti could report in June at the General Assembly of CIPC in Bolbec/France that Radstadt is ready to welcome the 5th Coubertin Youth Forum.
4
CASTLE TANDALIER AS SITE OF THE EVENT. In the federal youth hostel for schools, usually boarding pupils for one week school skiing courses in winter and summer sport weeks as well as holiday projects about 150 persons can be housed "under one roof". There are sports installations and play grounds, discussion rooms and meeting places that help to organize activities within very short distances. A friendly atmosphere was spread by the young director Birgit Kleindienst and her team always ready to serve the participants not only during meal times but also in the times between. The secretariate taken care of by Eva Zacsek who had done a lot of preparatory work in the weeks before was installed in the lobby to welcome the groups. Students and accompanying teachers soon found their rooms and in the time until the first get together and during breaks in the program they could enjoy the very informative tables of the exhibition on the life of Pierre de Coubertin and Olympic Principles as worked out and presented by the Erfurt Coubertin Gymnasium. Ines Nikolaus had taken the posters also presented at the Olympic Youth Camp at Athens 2004 to Radstadt. Eager Students had a good chance to get important informations also for the Knowledge Test and the work in the discussion groups.
5
THE IDEA OF THE 5TH FORUM. Following the impressions and the results of former Forums Hermann Andrecs proposed to put emphasis on the ability and responsability of the participants them-selves. They should be involved in the organisation of their activities as much as possible. So using the network among the schools all invited groups were requested to hand in questions for the knowledge test. From the best multiple choice questions the questionairy was set up giving the very active groups the chance to find items of their own choice again in the test. The groups were also invited to practice discussions led by a member of the group assisted by a secretary and a reporter as it would be done at Radstadt. As the program in Radstadt was very dense one of the four issues for discussion „amateurism and volunteering“ was expected to be done already in the respective schools during the months before. There was a first attempt in „students for students“ within the Arts Performance of the PdC Award having a jury entirely set up by one student each of the teams. The jurors had to rate the performances twice, the first concerning the idea (the script, the content, the message) and the second considering the performance (well rehearsed, original interpretation, humor, enthusiasm). Jean Dury at the end of the presentations summed up the work of the jury as well done in spite of the fact that there was not much experience expected in this activity. All in all CIPC by this measure tried to make the Forum more of an all year activity for the teams.
6
A FIRST GET TOGETHER. The various teams arrived at different times and different places. However, transport was taken care of. So after dinner it was time to gather all groups in the gym hall. Games, some dances and even a common song helped to overcome shyness and distance and at the end of a long day travelling all students and teachers could form a big circle holding hands for a beginning friendship. The ice was broken, the wish for good cooperation to make a successful week was born.
GROUP LEADER MEETINGS. At the same time Norbert Müller and Ines Nikolaus organized the first group leader meeting which was followed by a daily up dating of all necessary measures. The idea of integrating the participants in the leading of activties required good information and feedback. (Some schools had not handed on the informations from the network to the students). At these meetings a group leader as well as an accompanying teacher was expected to participate. It took a few meetings until it worked the way it was intended to do.
BORG RADSTADT - A VERY ENGAGED HOST SCHOOL. From the very first contacts BORG Radstadt proved to be the best choice for an event like the Forum. With Mario Sarcletti as Head of the school and Andrea Stolz as one of the teachers the organizing committee could rely on the help in many fields. Mr. Sarcletti not only infected his teachers with his enthusiasm, he had the assistance of his teachers and students who took over several tasks, such as participating with a team, with the school orchestra in the Opening and Closing Ceremony, as well as at the farewell party. The students were also ready to work as assistents in the sports events and in the other activities. And they offered to make a daily newspaper, the FORUM NEWS, which was a great challenge. The teachers in the team Ilse Hartl (conducted the orchestra and composed a Forum Anthem), Elisabeth Junger, Elisabeth Mayerhofer (Forum News), Johannes Obereder, Harald.Rath and Ingrid Weissensteiner had a lot of work not only during the Forum but also in the time before.

THE OPENING CEREMONY. It really was a ceremony as the students' orchestra of BORG Radstadt surprised the audience with a new piece of music „Forum Anthem“ composed by the conductor Ilse Hartl especially for this occasion. Hermann Andrecs on behalf of the organizing committee welcomed as special guests the mayors of Radstadt and of Bischofshofen, the representative of the bid committee for the Olympic Winter Games 2014 Salzburg who later in the program presented the venue, the sites of the alpine and nordic events as well as the economical and the spiritual benefits of the event. Andrecs moderating the opening heartily welcomed the colleagues of the CIPC Board President Dr. Norbert Mueller, Michel Renaud, Ines Nikolaus and Igor Lanzoni. The Honorary President Geoffroy de Navacelle de Coubertin not able to be present at the Forum sent the following message for all participants:

The students and teachers as most important guests were then presented by Ines Nikolaus, who not only had helped her students to create the wonderful exhibition but also built up the network of PdC schools. She has invested a lot of time and energy to hand on all informations to the teams and to keep contact with all groups. Dear Olympic Family, On behalf of CIPC I would now like to present the participating groups of the 5th International Pierre de Coubertin School Forum. Having been an accompanying teacher for the 5th time, I am very happy to tell you about a new record: 15 participating delegations from 13 countries! Unfortunately, the delegation from St. Petersburg in Russia could not attend because they did not get their visas in time. I extend to you the best greetings from our Russian friends. They are very sorry that they cannot participate this time, but they want to stay in touch with all members of the International Pierre de Coubertin School Network. They wish us much success in our 5th Youth Forum in Radstadt, in the heart of the Austrian Alps. Regrettably, the teams from Cameroon and Tunisia could not attend either because their flights had been cancelled at the last minute. Hopefully, they can join us at the next Forum in two years. The host school of our 5th Youth Forum is the BORG Radstadt which will hopefully soon be called a Coubertin School, too. Here are its students: Marina Herzmayer, Magdalena Steiner, Ferdinand Seebacher, Phillip Szalay, Wolfgang Polleros, Willi Scherübl, Martin Bergmüller, Marjan Tankosic, Reinhard Kornberger. From the very beginning of the Forums a close contact to a local school was very much intended. It worked well at Bolbec 1997 and at Much Wenlock in 1999, but in the events 2001 and 2003 a good cooperation with a local school was missing. BORG Radstadt however has proved to be an excellent partner contributing a great deal of interesting assets for the Forum. In his welcome address Mario Sarcletti the Head of the school pointed out that he ,his staff and his students considered it a great honour and challenge to be a host for an international event of high quality. He told of the endeavour to be present in the Forum with a team, with the orchestra, with a number of assistents and also with a group of young editors for the Forum News. The students' representative assisted him with greetings on behalf of the students. After some remarks concerning the size and structure of Austria (82.000 km2, 9 provinces of which Salzburg is one in the middle of the country and about 2500 communities) the Mayor of Radstadt Josef Tagwercher addressed the audience. As a highlight of the morning Norbert Mueller gave a lecture on Pierre de Coubertin, on the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee (CIPC), on the Forums and the Pierre de Coubertin Award. Finally the Salzburg area as candidate of the Olympic Winter Games 2014 was presented by Gernot Leitner from the bid organization. The opening session was rounded up by the quoir of the host school with the song: We are the world, we are the children.

THE PDC AWARD - RULES FOR THE COUBERTIN AWARD. 1. Community Service: All students must undertake in their own country an activity which benefits their community. Working with elderly people, coaching groups of young children in sports and any form of voluntary service are considered acceptable. Schools receive forms for completion which should be signed by the Head of the school as confirmation of each individual student's successful participation. The forms had to be brought to the Forum in Radstadt. 2. Olympic Knowledge Test: All students as individuals had to complete a short test about the Olympic Movement. Questions on the ancient and modern Games. The life of Pierre de Coubertin, Olympic Games venues (summer and winter) were included. For the 5th Forum students were invited to contribute to this knowledge test by handing in questions they thought would be interesting. By this measure very active schools in preparing questions would have a chance to find some of their issues in the questionaire again. These were the questions for the test 2005:

Students got points in the four disciplines, the total was taken as basis for the classification. Students of schools without sport specialisation had to reach 80 points (male) and 60 points female. Students of sport schools had to reach a total of 120 (male) and 100 (female) points. The best results: Male: Sport schools

4. Arts Performance Award: All teams of the participating schools had to perform to the audience either a drama, a dance or a musical performance or another work of art. At the 5th Forum the performances of the groups were rated by a jury made up by students. Each group nominated a team member for the jury to watch and rate the performance in a scale of 1 - 6 points. Each performance was rated twice, the first for the idea (the contents, the script, the message) and the second for the performance (well rehearsed, original interpretation, humor, enthusiasm). Jean Durry of CIPC a very competent and interested observer of the performances summed up the surprisingly good work of the jury doing this job for the first time. He stated that the greatest difficulty is the rating of the first team in the series as there is no comparison yet and it is sometimes not so easy to find the idea of a plot for the young judges. However, this first attempt with a students' jury appeared to him encouraging.

5. Olympic Values - the Discussion Groups. All participants took part in three discussion groups on the Relevance of Olympic Values established by Pierre de Coubertin about one hundred years ago. Searching for ways on how to make Olympic principles work in the life of youth they delt with the topics „citius, altius ,fortius“ - the strife for efficiency, Fair Play, Mutual respect and work for peace. The forth topic „amateurism and volunteering“ the groups had been asked to deal with already at home in their schools as a kind of test too, as the dicussions in the Forum were all organized by the students themselves (moderator, secretary, reporter). After the first discussion some hints as to organize the run of the discussion contents seemed to be helpful. Helen Brownlee from Australia with her wide experience offered to assist with a strategy. Here are the suggestions Helen gave for the second and third discussion session: Discussion groups Fair Play „the important thing in life is not the victory but the battle, the essential is not to have won but to have fought well“ Pd.C Divide yourselves into 4 groups. Each group has 30 minutes to discuss one of the following topics: 1. Win at all costs - does this reflect the Olympic ideal? 2. it's not the winning it's the taking part 3. Drugs and stimulants - HOW far can we go? 4. Commercialism and its effect on sporting performance Each group needs to report back to the whole group their topic. As a whole group, (please use a different secretary and reporter) use the topics you have been discussing and decide what fair play means to you? - 30 minutes Everyone must then go to the gymnasium to report back to the whole forum Mutual Respect and work for Peace „to ask different peoples to love one another is mere childishness. To ask them to respect one another is not Utopian, but to respect ona another they have to know one another“ Pd.C „I believe that athleticism will come out grander and ennobled and that international youth will draw from it a love of peace and a respect for life“ Pd.C Divide yourselves into 4 groups. Each group has 30 minutes to discuss one of the following topics: 24
1. How do the Olympic Games celebrate humanity? 2. Does the world divide or unite through the Olympic Games? 3. How can the Olympic Games contribute to world peace? 4. HOW can young people impact and strengthen the Olympic ideals? Each group needs to report back to the whole group their topic. As a whole group, (please use a different secretary and reporter) use the topics you have been discussing and decide how young people can use mutual respect to work for world peace. - 30 minutes Everyone must then go to the gymnasium to report back to the whole forum FINAL REPORT FOR CLOSING CEREMONY All reporters must get together to create one statement from each discussion theme for presentation at the closing ceremony. Maximum 1 page per theme.

THE EXCURSIONS - NOT ALL DREAMS COME TRUE. When the Organizing Committee planned an excursion to Ramsau the venue of the Nordic World Championship 1999 we thought it would be interesting for the students and teachers to go up to the glacier on Dachstein, have a magnificent view of high mountains and snow and the chance to watch some national teams work out on cross country skis on the glacier. However, it rained all day long and the Dachstein and the surroundings were all covered in clouds and fog. Stefan Scholz had so well prepared the afternoon and the evening but he could not prevent the bad weather. In spite of this fact about a hundred participants went up with the cable car just to feel a bit snow and the cold wind and another group went to a factory for woolen cloths typical for that region. Dinner that day was offered in Hotel Matschner, a place also well equipped for the following "social evening" when the teams had the opportunity to present themselves. A great variety of ways to show what place they come from, with informations about their schools and programmes and about specialities of their regions sometimes along with little souvenirs. Much Wenlock surprised the groups and members of CIPC with a special gift. The team took with them saplings of the Coubertin-oak, planted on the occasion of Coubertin's visit to Much Wenlock in the year 1890, so with the remembrance of Coubertin, of Penny Brookes and of Much Wenlock the spirit of these early Olympians should grow and work on in generations of our time. The second excursion was one to the Castle of Hellbrunn near Salzburg, the guides sponsored by the City and a tour through the famous City of Salzburg, this time guided by teachers of Salzburg to renowned places of the City, among them also the birth place of Mozart, the Dome and the Residence. By the good contacts of Mario Sarcletti, the Head of the host school, all participants were invited for a reception in the Landesberufsschule Obertrum (a centre of gastronomy) given by the Salzburg Government, the City and CIPC. The head of the school Dr. Feichter was very pleased to welcome young students and their teachers from many countries including those of Kenya and Australia and his students assisted to make this evening a very pleasant experience. 26
FORUM MEETS RADSTADT. Another highlight in the programme was an evening in the city of Radstadt. Thanks to the very good contacts of Mr. Sarcletti to the Community Council (having been part of it for a long time) all participants were welcomed at the center of Radstadt. In the Forum News of next day we could read: „Yesterday evening a special event was given for us by a lot of interesting people. The participants and the teachers met at the center of Radstadt. While the participants waved flags and banners the marching band and the historic guardsmen of Radstadt performed a welcome ceremony. Afterwards the Big Band of the local secondary school gave a sample of their music. Our Greek guests were so enthusiastic that they spontaneously started dancing and singing. Special thanks to Mrs. Hartl and Mrs. Lugstein for their presentations with the students of BORG Radstadt. We hope all the people enjoyed this special program.“ The student reporters did not mention that at the same occasion the Mayor of Radstadt Mr. Josef Tagwercher, invited representatives of each team to his office for a reception in which he thanked President Müller for choosing Radstadt as venue for the 5th International Forum and he handed on a book of Radstadt as a souvenir for each group.
27
THE CLOSING CEREMONY. Again the orchestra of BORG Radstadt contributed to give the event a festive character. After welcoming Mr. Tomas Sithole the Director of International Relations of IOC and his assistent officer Mr. Edward Kensington the President of CIPC gave his final address: Dear Olympic friends from Africa, Australia and Europe, Dear colleagues, directors and teachers of the Coubertin network, Dear Mr. Sithole as representative of the IOC, the 5th Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forum Radstadt 2005 has come to its end. I think we all had a very successful week here in the Austrian Alps. You, dear Coubertin scholars, have given your best and you will take with you a lot of new experiences and impressions. It was not easy to perform successfully in all categories of the Coubertin Award: In sports, knowledge, arts and social service. Not all have reached their goals in spite of their endeavour. However, the most important win of the last six days was mutual understanding and friendship with participants of so many other countries. And this was a great aim of Coubertin too for the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement „to build a peaceful society, blending sport with culture and education.“ I would like to thank all accompanying teachers for your engagement in preparing and leading the groups. I especially thank the whole school community of BORG Radstadt for the wonderful partnership during the week. I am very grateful for the excellent organizing work of Hermann Andrecs, Mario Sarcletti and Ines Nikolaus with all their very competent helpers. And I would like to thank the IOC for the important moral and financial support. We from the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee as president, along with vice president Durry and the responsible delegate for the Forum Ines Nikolaus express our appreciation and gratitude to all of you.

PRESENTATION OF THE FINAL REPORTS OF THE DISCUSSION GROUPS. Mrs. Ellen Brownlee from Australia before giving the floor to the student reporters gave a short summary of her impressions of the work in the various groups. She helped to do the difficult precis for the following presentations: Citius, Altius, Fortius In summary, Citius, Altius, Fortius means faster, higher, stronger. We decided that itencourages us to compete against ourselves, and prove ourselves, rather than competing against others. The motto inspires people on a worldwide scale to face and deal with problems, to break personal boundaries, and to bet he best that they can be. The motto helps our personality by strenthening our characters. It helps us to compete in a friendly way. It can be applied not only to sport, but to relationships and our personal lives. Pierre de Coubertin intended this motto to be a motivation for those athletes competing in the Olympic Games, as well as other people all over the world who compete in sporting events. Citius, Altius, Fortius is about trying your best – not being the best. In order for a peaceful society worldwide, we all need to understand and respect this motto – helping us to convey the message of freedom to go beyond the boundaries set by records. Alexandra (Pallini), Stefan (Erfurt), Frankie (Much Wenlock)
Fair Play Our discussion showed that winning at all costs was not that important, as the emphasis should be on taking part. In our view, the people who try their hardest are the real winners; not necessarily the one who crosses the line in first place. Taking part ist fun – regardless of whether you win or not! Winning sometimes can lead to over-confidence and you do not strive to do your best. Sucessful athletes should help others to develop to a high standard, but this should be don fairly. The taking of drugs to enhance performance is not fair – as they can be dangerous to health and give a negative image and influence to young people. Television helps keep sport alive across the world inspiring us to participate in the spirit of fair play. 30
Generally, sponsors also help to promote sport and the Olympic Games in a good way. However, sometimes commercialisation can put a lot of pressure on athletes, and could force them into the areal of drugs to better their performance. Sport should be fair – giving everyone the same opportunity to develop their skills and compete as the best that they can be. If we do not participate in the spirit of fair play, then the experience is not worth it. Neil (Much Wenlock), Malcolm (Kenya), Aimar (Tartu)
Mutual respect and work for peace Our interpretation of humanity ist he idea that humans work together and cooperate through respect for each other. The celebration of humanity within the Olympic Games is shown by the unity of different cultures, beliefs and ideals. As well as this, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games clearly demonstrate humanity by welcoming all nations to come together in sport. The Olympic Rings and the Torch Relay are other tangible expressions of humanity celebrated through the Olympic Games. Physically the world is divided. However, every four years there is an opportunity to unite the world through participations in the Olympic Games. In this way, the coming together of people from different nations contributes the world peace, creating friendship, mutual respect and understanding. Young people are the future. By enganging and promoting Pierre de Coubertin’s message to the rest of society we can make a significant impact around the world. As participants of this 5th International Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forum we have demonstrated and lived out the Olympic Ideals. If Pierre de Coubertin were with us today – seeing so many young people from different countries working together in peace and harmony, I believe he would be happy to see that his dream has come true. Claire (Australia), Anna (Pyrgos), Jaroslav (Tabor), Edward (Much Wenlock)

3RD CATEGORY OF THE COUBERTIN AWARD: SOCIAL PERFORMANCE. (Summary given at the Closing Ceremony by Ines Nikolaus) It was your task in preparation of our 5th Youth Forum to contribute a social activity. This was already to be done at home and it should benefit your community. As in the previous Youth Forums the CIPC Board Members were very pleased to read about the social service completed by nearly all participants. Of course, I can only mention some examples today, so I have chosen the most impressing ones: z Michaela from Piestany taught young children how to swim, z Anna supported elderly and ill people, z Hana, Veronika and Ivan from Tábor took part in a charity campaign against cancer, z Kaur from Berlin helped to decorate a children’s centre in his home town, z David and Franziska from the same school helped to clean the Memorial of the former Concentration Camp Stutthoff, z The whole Pallini team did voluntary service during the Paralympics in Athens, z Jessica from Australia often worked as a volunteer for the organisations Mealson-Wheels and Relay for Life, z Claire from the Australian team took part in fundraising activities for the AIDS Foundation, z Kaupo from Estonia was very active in organising the School Olympics and he did an excellent job as President of the students’ self-government, z Our Austrian friends from Unterwaltersdorf organised an unforgettable afternoon in an old people’s home, z Vladica from Kosovo worked as a coach for a children’s basketball team, 32
z Thomas and Melinda from Bolbec in France worked hard washing cars and selling cakes for UNICEF, z The students from Pyrgos planted new trees to grow a forest which had been destroyed by fires. Others supported orphans and handicapped children, z Our friends from Radstadt supported disabled people during their work in a protected work place, z Francesca from Much Wenlock worked together with the community police and Victoria cared for children in hospital, z Stewart from Tanzania is a member of the Environment Club of his school and helps to keep school tidy and free from litter, z Malcom from Kenya is a member of the Agricultural Club which plants vegetables in the school garden to reduce the costs of purchasing food, z Francesca from Savona helped cleaning the beaches in her region and coached groups of young children, z The students of the Erfurt team traditionally organised a sports festival for disabled children of an orphans’ home. Unfortunately, I cannot mention all activities. But you all did a great job: You helped those who need our help!

PRESENTATION OF THE AWARDS AND DIPLOMAS. As one of the highlights of the closing ceremony President Dr. Mueller assisted by Mr. Sithole, Mr. Durry and Mrs. Nikolaus handed over the Pierre de Coubertin Award to all candidates reaching the level and the diplomas of participation to the others. And it was a good idea to present the first winners of the Coubertin-medal of Austria's sport schools in this setting. The Ministry of Education following a recomendation of CIPC and respecting the European Year of Education by Sports 2004 has started a yearly award for the graduate of each sportgymnasium who is considered as a role model. The student should be chosen by the school community (teachers, parents, students) considering outstanding sports performance, good success in the final class and exemplary conduct. The medal was created by the artist Karlheinz Oswald from Mainz, the foto of Oswald's Sculpture is also the logo of the 5th Forum. The seven winners of the Award present (out of eleven) received their medals from the President of CIPC and Hermann Andrecs on behalf of the Minstry of Education. Their names are: Marlies Deutsch, Dominik Weghaupt, Kerstin Pircher, Anna Döcker, Nadja Berger, Elisabeth Prietl and Susanne Schlattner.

The International Pierre de Coubertin Committee then thanked those who had worked in the organization and handed over diplomas, medals and flowers. „The Forums must go on“ was the motto when the organizing team of Radstadt handed over a baton with the names of the 5 Forums so far to the President and to the head of Tabor, the presumptive venue of the Forum 2007. And it fitted well into the programme that the teams of Radstadt and Tabor were asked to present their show of the arts performance again in this setting. It is a custom in Austria that at national and international events of importance the national anthem is played. Before this last act Hermann Andrecs said a few final words: "What we need above all in life is an idea for which we are ready to give our utmost", these words of Ralph Waldo Emerson are certainly true also for the life of Coubertin for he spent a life time in energy and enthusiasm for the olympic idea and for the education of young people. And I myself have also found out that olympic education in the true sense of the word is something that carried me through all my life. There are three messages among many we should keep in mind: 1) It pays to try hard, 2) Those that are gifted have a higher responsibility for others, and 3) Together we are stronger. Tomorrow morning when the busses are waiting we do not want to just dismiss you, no we want to send you forth to your schools as ambassadors for a better understanding among the youth of the world. And there is no better message than your example.

THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. A questionaire both for participants and for accompanying teachers has been worked out by Ines Nikolaus concerning the 5th Forum but also former Forums and all present at Radstadt answered the various questions. The results of this research and the moral for further Forums will be published in the next Information Letter.
THE BUDGET. Thanks to the ability of Peter Rehnelt who has a lot of experience in handling financial tasks in school sports and thanks to the support of a number of institutions and volunteering helpers the estimated costs were not exceeded. The 5th Forum in this regard can also be seen as an example of economy.
BORG RADSTADT - THE FIRST COUBERTINGYMNASIUM IN AUSTRIA. As one of the results of the „enterprise Forum at Radstadt“ we can announce that CIPC has agreed that the host school of the 5th Forum BORG Radstadt will be the first institution in Austria with the exstinctive name „Coubertingymnasium“. An official ceremony will take place in the beginning of the school year 2006/07.
A SUMMARY IN FRENCH. For the French speaking members of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee we have here a report by President Dr. Mueller as it was circulated by the secretary general of CIPC on October 8th 2005.
