What Is an Electrolyte Beverage and When Do You Need One?
I know what you are going to say: that water is the most hydrating liquid and we should all just drink more of it. But the truth is that the whole conversation about health and hydration is a little more complicating that you’d think. We now know more about the way the human body works, and what it needs to be more hydrated and even heal more quickly. An electrolyte beverage now sounds like a magical drink, so in this article, we’ll look at what it is exactly. Let’s see if you need a sugar free electrolyte powder!
What Is an Electrolyte Beverage? To put it as simply as possible, an electrolyte beverage is a drink that contains water and essential minerals, with the purpose of hydrating the body more efficiently. This is a great way to rehydrate, especially after being sick, intense exercise and or if you just lost fluids through sweat. The most common electrolytes found in these drinks are: magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium and chloride. Each one of them plays a specific role, like regulating heart rhythm or supporting muscle movement. An electrolyte beverage can come in a few different forms, with the most common one being the ready-to-drink bottled option. But you can also find tablets or powder that you can put in your water. It’s important to keep in mind that not all options are the same; you can find a sugar
free electrolyte powder, while others will have sugar. Thankfully, there are options for every taste and need. You can find some that are more natural, while others are more concentrated, but they also typically work faster. But, most importantly, the ingredient quality, added sugar and mineral ratio affect how useful the product is.
How Do They Actually Support Hydration? One common misconception about hydration is that you just have to replace the lost water, but you also have to maintain the right balance of fluids and minerals. Drinking only water after doing an intense workout can actually do more harm than good, because it further dilutes your electrolyte levels. This contributes to the sense of weakness and cramps. So, if this were you after a workout, you now know why. An electrolyte beverage can help you solve this problem by replacing both fluids and minerals at the same time. As an example, sodium enhances water absorption in the intestines, helping your body rehydrate more efficiently. Moreover, potassium actually supports muscle contractions while also preventing imbalances. The magnesium and the calcium assist with muscle control and this is how all of the minerals work together to ensure that your body is hydrated. In situations in which your body requires more hydration, a sugar free electrolyte powder can do the trick. So, it’s not that water is bad for you, it’s more that there are moments when your body needs something more than plain water.
When Do You Need an Electrolyte Beverage? Truth be told, people don’t need electrolytes on a daily basis. As mentioned previously, electrolytes are especially needed if you lose fluid because of illness, intense exercising or you just need to hydrate. For most people engaging in light activity under normal conditions, water and a balanced diet provide sufficient hydration and minerals. If you don’t know exactly how to tell if you are or aren’t dehydrated, and are in need of some electrolytes, let’s take a look at some common signs: • • • • • •
Constant thirst Dry mouth/skin Low energy levels Headaches Dizziness Changes in urine colour or frequency
Know that hot or humid environments are another common trigger. Whether you’re working outdoors, traveling in warm climates, or spending extended time in the sun, sweating increases fluid and electrolyte loss. These are some of the cases in which it’s a good idea to restock your electrolyte levels, if you want to prevent dehydration-related symptoms. It’s good to put some sugar free electrolyte powder in your drink whenever you feel like your body needs a pick-me-
up. In case you are sick, especially when vomiting or experiencing fever, you definitely need to help your body heal better and quicker.
How to Choose the Right Option for You? I know that everyone technically knows to look beyond branding when choosing an electrolyte beverage, but we forget this sometimes. The first thing you want to do is to check the content, because it will be slightly different for every drink or powder. Some beverages include more sugar, which provides energy more quickly. But for daily hydration, a sugar free electrolyte powder might be more appropriate. The cleaner the drink, the easier it will be for your body to tolerate and better for frequent use. But, at the end of the day, it all depends on what your body needs and can tolerate. There is no secret recipe, but it’s more about finding which option is best for you. Even if we’re talking about athletes, they will still have different hydration levels at the end of a workout. Which is why you can try and start with a lighter and simpler option, to allow your body to adapt, and to see if you need more or less. Find out what works for the level of activity that you do, for your specific environment and health goals. Excessive levels of electrolytes can result in muscle cramps and heart rhythm issues.
Conclusion
Most people know about electrolytes, but not many know what they actually are and when you need them. They are great wherever your body needs to hydrate, which can be more often than you would think. Hot weather, a workout or the flu can require you to spice up your water with some electrolytes. As long as you don’t use an excessive amount, it should help you stay hydrated and even heal faster. Some of the most common signs of dehydration are thirst and dry mouth and dry skin, but are often accompanied by dizziness. If you notice these symptoms, you need some hydration.
