At the age of 36, on the verge of a completing a decade's worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi's health began to falter. He started losing weight and was wrecked by waves of excruciating back pain. A CT scan confirmed what Paul, deep down, had suspected – he had stage four lung cancer. One day, he was a doctor making a living treating the dying, and the next, he was a patient struggling to live. Just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined, the culmination of decades of striving, evaporated.

The Memory Eaters
BOOK REVIEW
T
here are discrete genres in literature because there are discrete readers, on the fact that people enjoy reading Harry Potter books or print stories of Star Wars, adapted from the films. The Memory Eaters begins like a story in the ghost and horror genre, but it quickly spins into a swashbuckling, conspiracy-laden samurai tale. By the time the last page is turned, philosophy-loving and romance readers who spurn it from just reading the blurb on the book cover will have missed a gem. The backdrop is an account of how a conscience-stricken Kuyin (a spirit that thrives on the memories of humans) decides to take her latest victim on a journey to recover the identity that she robs him of when she eats his memories. Little does this Kuyin know that she has stumbled upon her victim during a time of unrest in the province of Miyazu, where Lord Mokaga Narihiro is plotting revenge and rebellion against the Matsudaira clan that tricked Mokaga’s ancestor from joining the big battle in which Matsudaira led an eastern army to defeat the western one, thus becoming the Overlord of Japan, a title granted to him by the emperor. What Matsudaira saw as a matter of practicality – breaking up the Miyazu properties to weaken the territory – Mokaga sees as treachery.

Janice Tay 2017 Straits Times Press Call No. English TAY
In the months leading up to the climactic insurrection, a surveyor, Amanashi Gennosuke, and his assistant, Kyugo, survey Miyazu, checking on the rice produced to see if there is any evasion of tax. Gennosukeon’s decision to go for a hot bath is the principal event that turns the entire story, but we will not know why until much later. The complications in the tale occur in three other places. The first is the theatre in which the legendary actor, Matsushima Zenya performs with the Nishiyama-za troupe. After a performance in which he wins rapturous applause, Zenya mysteriously disappears. The second is the geisha house in Keijo (Kyoto) known as the Shimawara. The third is the temple known as Renga-Ji, north of Keijo. There, the temple priest, Teizen, and his 12-yearold apprentice attends to the Kuyin and her human victim. By this time, the Kuyin has given her victim a name – Amado (meaning “shutter” although the author prefers the meaning “curtain”) – and Amado, in turn, gives the Kuyin the name Sudare. The nondescript naming incident will become the anchor of the romantic part of the novel; but it is not so obvious, for there is a third party – an older, stronger male Kuyin whom Sudare names Ryuuwake. To dwell on this is to give away too much.
As the preparations for the rebel assault intensify, Mokaga becomes nervous and a couple of incidents cause him to act, but is his timing correct? It is also around this time that it becomes clear to Sudare that there is something about Amado that Mokaga has found out. Sensing danger to Amado’s life, Sudare makes plans to protect him. But is Mokaga after Amado, or someone else? By the time the battle at the Mokaga mansion takes place, the reader will have been pondering over deep questions of the connections between our memory and our identity. Without the former, can we have the latter? Without the latter, can we exist as a human being? Amado attempts to answer that last question. We must not forget, “[h]umans too are memory eaters”. How do we ingest memories and make them make us better humans?

No One Understands You and What to Do About It Author: Heidi Grant Halvorson Publisher: Boston, Massachusetts: Harvard Business Review Press, 2015 Call No.: Adult Lending English 158.2 HAL
Good communication is the key to desired outcomes in relationships or networking. However, there will be times where we fail to get our intentions across the way we want to. No One Understands You, written by social psychologist and bestselling author Heidi Grant Halvorson, and based on extensive research in psychology and social science, helps readers understand the intricacies of communicating. This book shows us how we can get a better understanding of what other people perceive from our actions and words, and how we can use this knowledge to control the signals we send, and shape others’ perceptions of us. If you’ve ever been frustrated by miscommunication, this is the book for you. Contributed by Herman Rothman
Zapped: From Infrared to X-Rays, the Curious History of Invisible Light Author: Bob Berman E-book
Have you always been curious about physics but found it a daunting subject to explore? Zapped is a layman’s guide to the physics of light and their many modern applications. Berman’s passion for the subject is evident through his writing – he uses humour to make the book a light and fun read, and debunks the notion that physics is a rarefied, complicated science. The author deftly illustrates difficult concepts with examples taken from both fiction and reality, and guides readers with lines including “read the preceding paragraph one more time”. Zapped is recommended for anyone who is curious about the physics of light, and is searching for a suitable read as a stepping stone to further study. Contributed by Gary Soh

True Names and the Opening of the Cyberspace Frontier Author: Vernor Vinge E-book
Virtual reality, personal data protection, cryptocurrencies and social media might be commonly used terms in 2017 but such ideas were already being explored and discussed as early as 50 years ago. In this seminal collection of essays and short stories, find out how eerily prescient the authors were in predicting the current landscape of cyberspace. From cautionary predictions about digital avatars to forecasting the looming spectre of artificial intelligence, these thought-provoking pieces were ahead of their time in providing insight into the debates that are only just now gaining traction. True Names and the Opening of the Cyberspace Frontier is truly an eye-opener for anyone wanting to trace how a once speculative future has become the present and what possible realities lie ahead. Canary Author: Duane Swierczynski Publisher: Mulholland Books, 2015 Call No.: Adult Lending English SWI - [TH]
A strong female lead? Check. Pulp fiction elements in a modern hard-boiled plot? Check. In Canary, Duane Swierczynski once again wields his inimitable style in another crime thriller that’s begging to be adapted for the big screen. After she unwittingly gets arrested as an accomplice in a drug case, 19-year-old Sarie is forced by an ambitious cop to become a confidential informant. But things get from complicated to surreal to just plain lethal when it turns out the case involves a network of student drug dealers, a real-life drug kingpin, a fake women’s clinic, corrupt cops, and a kill team that is methodically torturing and ‘disappearing’ confidential informants in town. Sarie has no chance of survival... or does she? Served with equal parts cool and menace, Canary is a wild, unexpected ride. Contributed by Roy See

Check Up Tulisanmu: Mengetahui seperti apa karaktermu & orang lain Lewat Tulisan Tangan Penulis: Jasmine Asyahida Penerbit & Tahun Penerbitan: Yagyakarta: Notebook, 2014 Nombor Panggilan: Malay 155.28 ASY

How has being a parent changed you, and the way you live your life?
We often read and hear of people causing problems to themselves and others due to alcohol intoxication. Little is known about how alcohol, a social drink, creeps up and takes hold of people. Even less is known about how to help someone who succumbs to excessive drinking or the extreme of ‘alcoholism’. Through an engaging story, Ram shares his knowledge in this area. He focuses on four main points:
Join us as we make sense of our parenting journey together, and rediscover how we can honour our dreams in our role as parents. Be prepared to make new friends as we look back on our past selves to become the parents we want to be today.
