CONGRESS BIKEEUROPE / VAKMEDIANET.NL Supply Chain Flexibility Changing consumer behaviour is forcing the bicycle industry in Europe to transform itself. Instead of sourcing components in Asia, production closer to markets is needed in order to bring down leadtimes. This generates supply chain flexibility and increases the speed to market. What benefits come with being fast? And, is switching production from Asia to Europe the only solution, or are there more options open to component makers? What else is needed to adjust the supply chain of the European bike industry to the demands of Internet browsing consumers who insist on having the products of their choice in hours and not in weeks? BJÖRN OFFERMANN DEUTSCHES ZENTRUM FÜR LUFT- UND RAUMFAHRT E.V. – DLR (GERMAN AEROSPACE CENTRE) Better than Batteries? The Fuel Cell Range Extender for Cargo Pedelecs from the German Aerospace Centre In comparison to modern batteries for cargo pedelecs, the hydrogen based FCREX (Fuel Cell Range Extender) from the German Aerospace Centre delivers significantly better performance characteristics by comparable weight and costs. In addition to this, the FCREX is designed as a module that fits in many frame concepts of cargo pedelecs. Thus the FCREX enables cargo pedelecs to transport higher weights for longer distances in hilly regions – if required with higher speed – and in lower ambient temperatures than battery-driven cargo pedelecs. Finally, the FCREX can be recharged within seconds and has a longer lifecycle than modern batteries.

STEVEN B. COOK Edenspiekermann AG Magic Moments: Creating the WOW! effect in the life of the customer Today, brands fight to capture our attention in the ocean of options we have to choose from. We live in an Attention Economy. Our on-demand society has resulted in brands leaving how they connect with customers to chance. Many try to out smart competitors with tricks to keep their customers online or in their store for longer, but duration of stay shouldn’t be the only way to build relationships. Brands need to create experiences that don’t waste people’s time, but impact their daily lives positively and make them feel part of the brand’s story. The time to deliver these experiences is now.

SOLVEIG LEGLER 1cc GmbH 2nd Environmental compliance for e-bikes – focus on take-back of batteries The sale of e-bike batteries is subject to a number of European waste regulations, following the environmental principle of “extended producer responsibility”. Along with manufacturers, it also affects dealers and onlineshops and results in certain legal obligations. This lecture points out the major steps to ensure compliance. It focuses on the challenge of safely taking back batteries from consumers, by tackling questions such as: What to expect from customers in the (work)shop? Which safety measures are to be taken for storage? How to organise an ADR-compliant collection?

JAMES POST, MICHAEL PECHT Battery Condition Test BV Charge Control DOUBLES E-bike Battery Lifetime & Optimal Design of E-bike Batteries: better features – lower assembly cost The most heard complaint about e-bikes by consumers is the lifetime of the battery. In the first part of this lecture, Prof. Pecht explains the factors that determine battery lifetime. A practical test at the Centre for Advanced Lifecycle Engineering (University of Maryland) confirmed that doubling the lifetime is realistically achievable. In the second part of this lecture, James Post explains the implementation of Charge Control in the BMS, as well as an external alternative that also works on existing batteries. In both cases, the cost of charge controlling is minimal, compared to the benefits. Nevertheless, BMS filters with an integrated charge indicator is the optimal solution.

CHange what you wear when it’s hot. Next-to-skin fabrics wick and dry, but they never truly cool. Until now. Polartec ® Delta™ cooling fabric is engineered with radiating surface structures that decrease friction, dissipate heat and moisture at a rate timed to your body’s natural cooling response. This ‘just right’ approach means Delta™ keeps you cooler, drier, and more comfortable than typical next-to-skin fabrics — even in the hottest conditions.
