A Message from the Director Happy New Year Hilton-Parma Community! As we welcome in 2018, we say goodbye to an amazing year filled with so many memorable experiences with many of you. In the fall alone, we hosted a number of programs and some jam-packed events including our first ever Before & After School Recreation Program, Grandparent’s Day Breakfast, the Apple-Derby Run, Evening for the Girls, Halloween Celebration and Elf themed Community Christmas Tree Lighting. Out of all the wonderful experiences from the fall of 2017, I would like to highlight two in particular with the first being the Halloween Celebration. Over the past two years we have hosted this event in conjunction with Make a Difference Day and this year, on October 28, 2017, this community came together for one of the most spectacular efforts I have seen. On this day, 15 community groups and over 250 volunteers provided 20 service projects that were meant to help people and simply put, “Make a Difference.” Due to the diligence of the organizing committee, volunteers and the giving nature of so many who participated, we saw record numbers in most all projects. Some of these projects included the Halloween event, Fire Hall Open House, Transportation Open House, a blood drive dedicated to one of our very own, a food drive, a winter clothing drive, community clean-up, electronic recycling and certified paper shredding, to name a few. Projects like these are well enough in small doses, but this year was different and throughout a two-hour time slot for Make a Difference Day, the community helped provide some fascinating response: •Four times as much blood was collected for the Red Cross than in any other year •Over 300 pounds of food that could not fit in the Food Shelf, nor be sorted that day was collected (this has never been the case) •350 plus people received a free lunch at the Halloween Celebration •24 pallets of electronics were recycled for a net weight of 14,357 pounds •More paper was properly shredded and recycled than at any other event the shredding company had attended. These are just a few of the ways we all made a difference on this day and I cannot be more proud of being a part of a community that works together for so much good like ours. I want to thank all of the participating groups, volunteers and sponsors and if anyone is interested in being a part of this special day in 2018, please let me know! Secondly, we are pleased to report that your Parks and Recreation Department was a four time award recipient in 2017! On Friday, November 17 the Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society hosted its annual award ceremony which recognizes excellence in the field throughout the Genesee Valley Region. Due to some amazing people and ideas, our community’s efforts were recognized in four distinct categories as follows: •Dave Tresholavy, Parks & Recreation Commissioner – ABCD Award (Above & Beyond the Call of Duty) •Tony Caraglio, Caraglio’s Pizza – Outstanding Corporate Partnership Award •Creative Tech Camp for Girls – Program of Merit Award - Instructed by Angela Boccuzzi-Reichert •Ellen Fridman, 2017 Fall Intern – Dr. Christine Howe Memorial Scholarship On the following pages, we have further highlighted these wonderful accomplishments where you can get to know our recipients, the criteria for award eligibility in addition what makes them so special. As we move forward into 2018, and before you dive into this edition of our Experience Program Brochure, I would like to thank Town of Parma Supervisor Jim Smith. After faithfully serving this community for 12 years (the last four as Supervisor), Jim has retired effective December 31st. Throughout my time here, Supervisor Smith has shown a great deal of support for Parks and Recreation in this community and for that, we are all greatly appreciative. Along those lines, we would like to introduce and welcome Jack Barton who has taken over Supervisor responsibilities on January 1, 2018. As always, thank you to my team here at the Recreation & Parks Departments, in addition to our many community partners and the Town and Village Boards. Without their efforts and support, none of the fun would be possible. I look forward to seeing you soon, Thomas Venniro, Director of Parks and Recreation

Supervisor’s Note Dear Community, The Town of Parma 2018 budget has been approved. I am happy to report that we were able to stay under the tax cap even though the Town’s health care costs increased at a much higher rate than the tax cap. With the winter snow season upon us, the Parma Highway Department will be busy keeping the roads in Parma passable during the coming months. Please be patient, give them plenty of room and pass with care. Don’t forget to slow down and move over when your car is approaching first responders. The Recreation Department has already started their winter sports activities. The new Before and After School Program which was started to help working moms and dads has been a great success. Make a Difference Day, October 28, 2017, was fantastic with great participation across a wide variety of programs. There were plenty of Halloween activities at the Community Center as well so be sure to check out some of the pictures on the Hilton-Parma Rec Facebook page. The Senior Center continues with their regular social events and daily lunchesincluding a number of day trips this past year. It will soon be tax season again and the Recreation Department, along with AARP, will again help our seniors prepare their returns. Parma Town Park is now on winter hours which means the gates open at 9:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m. During heavy snow events the gates may remain closed so please be careful out in the park this winter. Allow me to compliment Park Staff for a fine job maintaining the grounds, especially considering the massive amount of rain in the spring. In development news, one group has been approved in the Town of Parma to develop a large scale solar project. Several other developers continue to work on their plans. I would like to welcome Leslie Boedicker as the new Parma Librarian. The Library staff continues to offer a wide range of programs for the community which can be found on page 34 of this brochure. They have book readings for all ages and a variety of craft programs for all. Please remember that the VFW Hall is available to be booked for your next event. This will be my last letter to this bulletin as Supervisor of the Town of Parma. It has been my pleasure to have served our community in a number of capacities over the past 24 plus years. Think warm thoughts and enjoy the winter. Drive with care and be safe. Jim Smith Parma Town Supervisor

G.V.R.P. S. Awards & Achievements
ABCD Award Dave Tresholavy The individual goes “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty” by having made an outstanding contribution to the field of public recreation and parks, significant enough to have had a stimulating effect on recreation at a town, city, state or national level. This award is open to volunteers and parttime/seasonal, park or secretarial staff. This award is not intended for full time Park and Recreation Professionals. Dave Tresholavy has held the position of volunteer Recreation Commissioner for HiltonParma Recreation & Parks, representing the Village of Hilton within the Town of Parma since December of 2008. Dave is indispensable. He is that genuine guy who cares for the community in all that he does. His job does not end at the monthly commissioner meetings as you will always see Dave at HiltonParma Recreation special events, whether asked for help or not. Without hesitation, he is the first to volunteer, say that he’ll be there or ask if he can donate something. The countless hours of time and effort given by Dave does not ever go unnoticed and everyone needs someone like Dave in their town. He is reliable, supportive, generous and kind. He is that ONE guy that loves to help and is the true definition of “the little village with the big heart.”

Outstanding Corporate Partnership Tony Caraglio
The Outstanding Corporate Partnership Award recognizes a vendor, company, or individual who has significantly contributed to the field of parks and recreation. This vendor, company, or individual shows great leadership and support by providing equipment, volunteer time, in-kind services or other contributions to a project or programs that benefits the community. Caraglio’s Pizza is located in the heart of the Village of Hilton. If you drive through Main Street you can’t miss it. It’s a staple of the main street business, but so much more to this community. The owner, Tony Caraglio opened the first of his now five Caraglio’s Pizzas in Hilton back in 2004. Tony is the ideal Corporate Partner as he truly understands the importance of community and what it means to play a vital role in his community’s well-being and growth. Similarly, he understands the importance of a Recreation Department in a community and supports it in many ways. Over the years Caraglio’s has been a part of what we do from assisting with events like our Halloween Celebration, Pizza Playoff and Experience Parma to always sponsoring a youth baseball or softball team. Tony is a standup guy and will always help out no matter what; that’s the type of person he is. He is supportive, reliable, and willing to give and help. When called upon, Tony’s signature line is “what can I do to help?” Tony and Caraglio’s have been a huge asset to Hilton-Parma Recreation for years and is a true Outstanding Corporate Partner.

Job well done!
Program of Merit Creative Tech Camp for Girls This award is given to a department that has developed an outstanding ongoing program that is innovative, creative and unique in nature or that demonstrates a new twist on an old theme while still being consistent with current trends. In the summer of 2015, Hilton-Parma Recreation offered a new program, Creative Tech Camp for Girls. The camp offers one of the most unique opportunities for young ladies in grades three through eight to learn the wonders of technology; one of the most relevant fields and trends in the world today and a field that is generally associated with men. Not only is the camp fun and engaging, but it addresses two very important issues in society today, ever-changing technology and gender equality as it empowers young girls to be and do whatever they want in life. BOCES 2 even provided a website that highlights the program at http://libguides.monroe2boces.org/techcamp. On the site, you will find a creative layout to all Creative Tech Camp activities including pictures, social media “teaser” videos, YouTube videos, technology hacks and more! “It’s giving a bigger opportunity in the real world for girls, because we don’t get as much opportunity as boys to do things like this. So it’s a special privilege for us to do this kind of thing.” -Gracie, 7th Grade Camp Participant This program would not be possible without BOCES 2, Hilton Central School District and our passionate instructor, Angela Boccuzzi-Reichert.
DR. CHRISTINE Z. HOWE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Ellen Fridman, Hilton-Parma Recreation Intern The Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society recognizes the importance of recruiting spirited, resourceful and intelligent people into the Therapeutic, Public, Private, Park, Recreation and Leisure Service industry. The future success of this professional movement into New York State demands properly prepared leaders who can demonstrate skills in management, public relations, organization techniques, public speaking, technical application and problem solving techniques. Thus, the Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society provides professional development assistance to select students pursuing a major in a Recreation, Park Management or Leisure Services program. The recipient must be at least a matriculated major in a four-year accredited Recreation, Leisure Services, or Park Management program and enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours. Ellen Fridman is a SUNY Brockport student and just finished her final semester with us as a full semester intern. She has set the bar high during her internship with Hilton-Parma Recreation and there is truly no one more deserving of the honor she has received. As a department we are so proud of her and this accomplishment. During her time here, Ellen has made so many relationships and she is truly a part of our team. Someone once told me that the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that “little extra” and Ellen puts forth that little extra effort on a daily basis in all she does.

Just Keep Swimming! Instructional Swim Lessons We are very excited to once again partner with Varsity Swim Coach Jeff Sadowski and his Varsity swimmers to provide instructional swim lessons for all abilities and ages. The levels listed below are based on the Red Cross guidelines for swim lessons. Each level is described as accurately as possible but some adjustment may be necessary in order to place your child in the proper level. Any physical limitations should be noted on your registration form. All youth will be tested for swimming ability during the first class. School District flotation devices will be made available to those in need. Levels (suggested rule is to underestimate your child’s abilities): Pre-school aquatics - Gives children ages 4-6 a positive, developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experience that emphasizes water safety and survival concepts. Students will need to have a comfort level in the water. Once successful, students will advance to Level 2. Level 2 – Primary skills: Provides the non-swimmer basic water safety and introductory swimming skills. Must be comfortable going under water and will continue to support the non-swimmer. Flotation devices available if necessary. Generally, the toughest level to pass before moving into the deep end of the pool. Level 3 – Stroke readiness: Ability to swim underwater. Introduces the crawl stroke, back crawl, and deep water. Skills to improve stamina and basic coordination. They watch over the department operations with a support staff consisting of part-time permanent employees, roughly 50 seasonal employees and approximately six dozen contractual staff. The department coordinates over 300 volunteers who commit roughly 8,000 hours of service yearly. The staff are members of the New York State Recreation & Parks Society, the Genesee Valley Recreation & Parks Society, the National Recreation and Parks Association and the International Council of Active Aging. Thank You Volunteers! We would like to sincerely express our appreciation for all who have volunteered in one way or another for Hilton-Parma Parks and Recreation in the past year and prior. Over the past year we have been fortunate enough to host over 300 people in the community who have assisted us. Various community members, students, teachers, parents, civic groups and so many others have volunteered in the following capacities: • Youth Sports Coaches • Senior Lunch Assistants • Special Event and Program Hands • Park Improvement Teams Without you all, much of what we do would not be possible. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
