Editor’s Message The Strongest Months of 2010 Are Yet to Come I am happy to report that for our company, and for many of our clients, the first part of 2010 has been pretty good. However, the second part of this year will be even better. Even though it will take time to get back to where we all were in 2008, growth is returning to the economy. The ETMM Buyer’s Guide marks the beginning of the second half of each year for our industry. Because of its format as a comprehensive supplier database, it is the perfect communication vehicle for helping to set up the strongest part of this recovery year. The coming months bring extremely important trade shows that will pull the industry further out of the doldrums of the 2009 crisis. In September, our industry can look forward to AMB, which is the premier metalworking show of 2010. AMB takes place in the leading European high-tech region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. This show will present more than 1,000 exhibitors from 27 countries. It has become one of the shows at which manufacturers of metalworking equipment and supplies introduce products that are actually brand-new, so this will be a don’t-miss event. Because the fairgrounds are located next to Stuttgart International Airport, this venue is very accessible for people from all over Europe. In October, the K show returns to Düsseldorf, Germany. This is the biggest plastics trade show in the world, with over 3,000 exhibitors and 200,000 visitors. At K 2010, too, companies will introduce new products. K also is extremely important to the tool and mould sector. Capping off the year, as usual, will be EuroMold. This is the most important show in the world specifically for tool and mould makers. Taking place in Frankfurt, Germany, at the beginning of December, it will offer 1,500 exhibitors and draw more than 60,000 visitors. We at ETMM are excited about all of this activity that will bring the industry together and help sustain today’s positive attitude into the future. We hope to see you at all of these events. Sincerely,
Douglas Sellers MANAGING DIRECTOR/EDITOR-IN-CHIEF www.etmm-online.com

The umbrella International Special Tooling & Machining Association (ISTMA)—known as ISTMA World— consists of ISTMA Europe, ISTMA Americas and ISTMA Asia. It organizes international activities of the industry, meeting annually as it did in June during the ISTMA World Conference in Canada. The global association is overseen by an executive committee consisting of a president, vice president and treasurer and by a general manager who coordinates all association enterprises and the administration of association assets. Each regional section of ISTMA has its own chairperson and secretary. Regional committees of ISTMA World consist of representatives of all members in each of the regional sections. All ISTMA members communicate via the general members assembly. The association exists to enhance the reputation of the industry and its employees, provide communication channels for members, defend members’ interests in dealings with international organizations and authorities, promote the efficiency and profitability of companies belonging to the member associations, review industry training and educational standards as technologies evolve, and recommend worldwide standards for standard tooling components. ISTMA is the basis of a collective partnership of all companies involved with die and mould making, stamping tools, precision machining, and special machines. Those companies and their employees benefit from affiliation with the trade group. The induswww.etmm-online.com

ISTMA A ‘World-Class Success’ in Canada: That Was the 13th ISTMA World Conference and Associated Trade Mission More than 300 international delegates hailing from some 20 countries attended the 2010 World Tooling Conference in Windsor, Canada, June 20–24. The host association and event organizer, the Canadian Tooling & Machining Association (CTMA), pronounced the gathering a “world-class success.” The CTMA is a member of the International Special Tooling & Machining Association (ISTMA). Along with the 13th ISTMA World Conference, the week included the 11th International Pattern-Model Makers Congress and an Incoming Trade Mission that was partly funded by the Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and Fed-Dev Ontario. The trade mission was designed to create global opportunities for Ontario’s machine, tool, die and mould companies. The CTMA welcomed over 30 international buyers who arrived in Canada to take part in this contact programme and arranged nearly 400 one-on-one business meetings for its member companies. One Ontario tooling shop that participated reported this: “We had 10 meetings throughout the day, eight of which were with completely new contacts, and three discussed immediate project requirements which they have
promised to send us RFQs for.” That company also held follow-up meetings at its facility with the Canadian Consulate, representatives of the State of Mexico, and another buyer. It is hopeful of immediate business, but, perhaps more important, the shop sees good prospects for future international endeavours. The CTMA particularly credits Joan Bachmeier, an experienced Windsorarea industry consultant, with making the mission successful. She worked to

engage the buyers and organize the many meetings with Ontario shops. At the ISTMA World Conference, more than 20 speakers delivered technical presentations on a wide range of topics. An additional conference highlight for buyers and conference delegates alike was the full day devoted to touring local machine, tool, die, and mould shops that put an interesting range of state-of-the-art capabilities and skill sets on display. Feedback supplied by participants in the plant tours revealed that international buyers were impressed with the expertise in evidence in Ontario’s tool shops.
