The Most Flexible Format in Advanced Management Training A Format that Works for You Pursue your educational needs while continuing to lead your organization. While traditional senior executive programs have been offered for decades, only one school—Chicago Booth— has responded to the changing speed and needs of business by offering an unprecedented level of flexibility and customization in the Advanced Management Program. Composed of six nonconsecutive one-week courses over a year, the Advanced Management Program format is the result of interviews with more than 300 senior executives, who all cited the need for flexibility and an individualized curriculum. AMP at Chicago Booth is a total of six week-long sessions, and half of the sessions are completely customizable. Three core sessions give you the tools you need to be a more effective leader. Three elective sessions allow you to individualize the curriculum to your needs.
Immediate Application Put your new knowledge to work immediately. With six sessions spread over a year, you have the chance to absorb what you’ve learned, implement your new knowledge in the workplace, and bring your questions and observations to the next session. Between sessions, you will engage in coaching calls with your peers and faculty members to discuss your successes and challenges in applying the course frameworks. The ongoing dialogue created through this format is unique to the Chicago Booth Advanced Management Program. No other advanced management program offers the opportunity to continuously try new skills and techniques in the workplace and receive valuable feedback from professors and peers.
Individualized Curriculum Choose electives that best fit your needs. Three elective sessions are taken with colleagues from a range of industries and functions and focus on such areas as finance, marketing, strategy, negotiation, and decision making. These elective sessions allow you to individualize the curriculum to best complement your career goals, professional development needs, business interests, and schedule.

Participant Perspective Mark Mowat Managing Director Frontier Capital
“ I expected to become a more effective business leader and bolster my professional biography; however, I came to understand that I gained something much more important to my development as a person and a professional. I left the program with a keen desire to find greater fulfillment from my work, and as a result became a better leader in the process.”
“ The Advanced Management Program is ideal for executives looking for something new that will shake the ground they work on. Executives should be ready to consider and answer difficult but critical questions. Global Customer Delivery Head The program is thoughtfully designed, the faculty were outstanding at Nokia Siemens Networks connecting their research and content to the corporate world, and my classmates were exceptional.”

“ The Advanced Management Program has given me a chance to think outside of what I normally do on a daily basis, not as a physician, but as an executive. Even though there’s practicality to the knowledge, there’s challenge to the thought process, which enhances my critical thinking skills. It’s given me a fresh perspective on how to look at my business.”
“ I love the format. To go in for one week and be totally immersed is phenomenal. Plus, that gives you the opportunity to come back to the real world and experiment with some of the ideas. And for me, it’s helping to provide the framework for where I want to be a year from now.”
“ This has been a much deeper experience than I anticipated. AMP brings together the technical content and the complexities involved in management and leadership in a thorough, profound way.”
Sponsoring Organization Benefits The Advanced Management Program creates value not only for the participating executives, but also for the organizations they lead. A format that lets executives keep working As critical contributors, executives’ time is one of the most valuable resources for an organization. The program format never pulls executives away from work for more than a week at a time.
Immediate results and instant feedback Our curriculum was developed with practical application in mind. Sessions spread throughout the year allow participants to take their learning back to the workplace and immediately put their sharpened skills to work. Executives introduce new ideas and frameworks to their teams after each session. Furthermore, executives can report their implementation successes and challenges on interim coaching calls between sessions and at future sessions for discussion and feedback from faculty and peers.
A program tailored to individual needs With the choice of three electives from our list of open enrollment offerings, executives can select courses related to business issues currently faced by the organization. And because electives are taken throughout the year, executives can change their electives as their knowledge develops and their business needs change.
Organizational impact beyond the executive Our program starts with a focus on the executive as a leader, but our emphasis is on those around them: their team, their firm, their community. They’ll not only realize their own potential, but inspire others to achieve greater results and create lasting value for the organization. Executives leave the program armed with knowledge and skills to leverage throughout the organization.
“Chicago Booth’s ability to create focus and connect with those going through the program is one of the advantageous reasons why we partner with them.” S ponsor perspective
Michael Geary
Vice President of Human Resources, Kiewit
“Kiewit has a long history of developing our leaders. You have to continuously sharpen the edge of the saw with external perspectives, methods of thinking, and approaches to business. When we know that someone is going to have a senior role in our organization, we use the Advanced Management Program as a way to sharpen that saw and give them that external perspective and experience. “The people we’ve put through the program speak very highly that they’re growing, they’re being challenged, and ultimately they’re able to come back and apply those skills. More importantly, as executive leaders of the business, we can see a difference in the individuals. It forces them to step outside their comfort zone, so you see a higher level of confidence. They have the ability to look at problems differently, in nontraditional ways. They’ve been able to interact with a different network of people and had the ability to think about work in a setting with little or no risk, so that when they come back, they’ve had the time to step out of their normal day-to-day work and can respond with more confidence.” 5
“There’s no doubt that this program has helped me develop a more strategic mind and widened my perspective.”
“I started to get involved in a lot of international business and I needed formal, deeper preparation. I was interested in more than technical or finance skills—more ways to structure strategy and social behavior. “On the first day the professor said, ‘We are not going to teach you what to think, but how to think.’ I didn’t believe it, but it was true. I found that the balance between the case analysis and walking through structural, academic facts was important. Making decisions that way has been really helpful for me and my organization. “One of the best things I got out of the program was a structured approach to social capital. We are citizens of big corporations, big cities, and big countries. I’m engaged not just with people in my company in the US but in places like China, Brazil, Colombia, and South Africa. Logging into those networks and structuring the kind of relationships I’m going to have are key for my success and the future of my business.”
The Chicago Approach Inquiry. Insight. Impact. Three words that describe the power and outcomes of a distinctive way of learning, analyzing, and engaging others. The way we generate, refine, and apply ideas sets Chicago Booth apart from other business schools and distinguishes our students for the entirety of their professional lives.
Rigorous Inquiry Our executive participants learn to question and evaluate challenges and opportunities through foundational disciplines. They engage colleagues and press to make the best answer to a problem even better.
Cogent Insight A diverse array of analytical and behavioral frameworks gives participants useful structure for organizing information so they can readily draw on it when needed.
Enduring Impact Participants leave prepared and confident to face any business challenge and create compelling, innovative business solutions.

Ed Auslander President and CEO LORD Corporation
“The Advanced Management Program merges the two elements we needed most from any program—flexibility and real-world expertise. The program allows students to pick the time and the content, which was a distinct advantage, as well as providing application opportunities between each session. In addition to the real-world business and leadership applications taught during each session, my classmates provided a built-in network of executives with whom I continue to collaborate and explore innovative ways to solve problems.”

Developing Core Capabilities: Vision, Agility, Leadership In the Advanced Management Program, you will be immersed in three week-long core sessions among accomplished peers. You will: • Develop a structured method for learning from your experience and generating insights. • Gain new perspectives on your organization, the industry in which you compete, and the challenges you face. • Become more reflective and critical in your thinking and encourage the same of your colleagues. • Learn how to better position your organization for growth in a rapidly and continually evolving business landscape.
Engaged Learning
Continued Engagement
During each of your core sessions, you will participate in a variety of experiential learning opportunities. You will have a unique opportunity to critically examine the way you interpret, frame, and approach strategic issues.
The learning and feedback don’t stop when you leave the classroom. Between core sessions, the faculty facilitates peer coaching calls to ensure your success in applying the class framework.
You will face decisions in which you have limited expertise and must effectively sort through an overflow of information for the most relevant and compelling data. You will need to engage and influence a variety of stakeholders with diverse and sometimes competing interests. This is a crash course in enterprise leadership essentials: strategic thinking, articulate advocacy, and creative problem solving. You will learn from going through the experience yourself, and also observing how your peers approach strategy development. You will benefit from insightful feedback from your classmates and faculty.
8
You will collaborate with a small group of peer learning partners to reflect on the key takeaways and their impact for your work. These calls allow you to strengthen and leverage your peer network, and tap into faculty insight about your personal goals and challenges. Post-program, participants stay connected to Chicago Booth and their classmates through a wide range of activities, including AMP reunions, Chicago Booth flagship events, regional events, and continued peer coaching opportunities. The Chicago Booth AMP is a transformative experience and one that continues long after you leave the classroom.
Introductory Core Session – October 10–14, 2016: The Executive Managing complex situations, making tough decisions, and leading corporate initiatives require a high degree of self-awareness. Successful executive leadership requires authenticity, clarity, and agility to engage different audiences. You will also explore the critical topic of social capital and how connections with subordinates, peers, colleagues, competitors, and other critical contacts in the market explain the variance in performance differences among senior executives. Securing your foundation, this session involves familiarizing you with key principles, by focusing on the interplay between your social capital and your own leadership agility.
Topics include:
• Competitive Advantage of Social Capital • Learning from Experience • Leadership Agility
Mid-Course Core Session – April 10–14, 2017: The Organization Here is a simple question: are the people around you better off because you are there? How do you inspire, motivate, and deliver results from the organization around you? Building on the first core week, which focused on your role as an effective leader, this week looks at how your role is integrated into your organization: how can you influence and drive change, develop a result-driven culture, and create value by identifying new opportunities and mobilizing resources around you? You will become adept at identifying key stakeholders and potential strategic partners, as well as improve your ability to engage them. Just as personal agility in the first core session was essential to a business leader’s competitive advantage, maintaining capacity for organizational agility is essential to this session’s discussion of leveraging competitive advantage across an organization.
Topics include:
• Coordinating across the Enterprise and Managing Barriers to Coordination • Embedding Innovation throughout the Organization • Leading Sustainable Organizational Change
Final Core Session – October 23–27, 2017: The Community Business is exposed more than ever before to the external environment. While we operate in global markets, competitive advantage is still personal and local. The immediate environment remains critical, but risk and opportunity can now come from far away. This week will help you to think strategically about your organization as being part of a broader system. Discussion ranges over the local community and across the continents. This third core session of your Advanced Management Program journey is about juggling your roles as a leader for your interests, your company’s interests, and the interests in your profession and community more generally. You will also have an opportunity to think deeply about your future plans and your legacy as a leader.
Topics include:
• Leadership and the Broader Community • Managing Organizational Reputation • The Global Economy

“Prior to joining Johnson Insurance, I ran and owned my own firm, which was smaller and not part of a larger financial institution. I wanted to make Johnson Insurance as successful as I could and was looking for opportunities to improve my skill set for this larger, more formal organization. Our human resources director and I began looking at different advanced management programs, of course concerned with the time commitment as well as the content that would best apply to the situations I faced at Johnson Insurance. “When we read about the Advanced Management Program at the University of Chicago, it seemed ideal. I could pick the content, I could pick the week, and I could immerse myself into the curriculum in a great environment. At the time I started the program, Johnson Insurance was expanding robustly using mergers and acquisitions. I remember coming back from a finance course with a good understanding of the calculations needed for that and how they applied to the world of finance. I immediately had a better grasp of what the tools meant and how to employ them to make better decisions at Johnson Insurance.”

“I head up all the divisions that interface directly with our clients— the national sales, training and deployment, enterprise, and client services teams. I just kept going up the ladder with my career accomplishments. Without my MBA, I felt a little hesitant, but this program gave me the confidence I needed. “The faculty members really ask themselves, ‘How do we make this special for the executives? How do we make it different, useful, and valuable knowing that they have years of experience already under their belt? What’s the next step?’ “The professors were very engaged and gave us everything they had. They took time to boil down the relevant issues specific to the class. They would look at the roster and say, ‘OK, I see that I have ten marketing execs in here and I know that you’re going to get more out of this particular area, so I want to spend some extra time on that and answer your questions.’ ”
