5 Tips When Planning a Home Addition Do you need more space? As our families grow and their needs change, we often find that we need more room. Rather than sell your house and move, consider adding on the extra space you need to the home you already own.
01
Decide if a Home Addition is Right for you First, consider why you need extra space:
Extra bedrooms
Space for entertaining A shop, man-cave, or craft room Mother-in-law quarters Once identified, your purpose will determine whether it’s best to add onto the existing structure of your home, or if perhaps something like a basement remodel might be more appropriate.
02 Set a Budget for the Desired Addition Before meeting with a contractor, determine how much money you want to invest in your remodel project, and how you will pay for it. You may want to speak with your bank about refinancing your mortgage or taking out a home equity loan.
03 Confirm Possible Zoning and/or HOA Restrictions Research local zoning laws and check with your neighborhood’s homeowner’s association to confirm the legality of building an addition to your home. Examine you home’s plot layout to establish whether there is room for the planned addition.
04 Develop a plan for your Home Addition Time spent with a licensed architect pays for itself in the long term. Communicate what you hope to accomplish by building onto your existing home, and discuss style choices you envision for the space. Your designer should develop and draft a plan that is both functional on the interior and aesthetically pleasing on the exterior.
05 Find a Reputable Contractor With plans and budget in hand, you’ll now need to find a reputable contractor. Check references and ask for recommendations. Gather estimates from at least three contractors. Their estimates should be detailed and in writing.
