Detroit Regional Yacht-Racing Association Hot Stove Meeting Minutes Grosse Pointe Yacht Club February 23, 2012
Attendees: Vice Commodore David Coleman, Treasurer Mickey Bennett, Secretary Alan Minsterman; Presenters: David Spiers, Rod Spearin, Brian Lang, Dale MacPherson, Mike McGuire, Robert Schappe, Edwin C. Theisen Jr. Total attendance was 40.
Call to Order: Vice Commodore David Coleman called the meeting to order at 1932 hours. Centennial Apparel: Sandy Davis of Albatross Embroidery was introduced and described the available items honoring DRYA’s 100 year anniversary. His items are available through his website at
[email protected] and is linked through the DRYA website. He can customize the items, including using your font as you might have on your boat.
PHRF Handicapping Report: David Spiers reported on: • BYC Mac Race – BYC requested DRYA to do all the handicapping for their race. There are some slight differences in the ratings as BYC has different credits and penalties primarily in the cruising class. For non-DRYA members, the process starts with you going to the BYC Mac Race website and enroll. For st the application form for the Mac Only Certificate, you will be linked to the DRYA website. June 1 is the BYC cut-off; DRYA will provide BYC with the valid list for access by all the competitors. For DRYA members, the normal DRYA process is followed and you will get a certificate good for any racing including the Mac race. If you are going to race Cruising class, you will get an additional certificate for the Mac Race as there are different credit & penalties. There is no extra charge for DRYA members. DRYA members will be put on a valid list and given to BYC. From the Audience for Follow-Up: Request DRYA to provide web access to get their own “.pdf” copy of their certificate (Jane does already email a copy of the certificate to the boat owner). [Frank Kern BYC] • 13 boats have been reviewed and the completed decisions have been posted on the web and owners notified. • 1 appeal has been completed and decision has been posted on the web and owner notified. st • New Valid Lists (DRYA and BYC) should be available by April 1 for everyone to view. • Currently have 150 applications in out of 235 from last year. • Too early to do starts and splits yet – will do later in the year.
Fleet Representatives: •
One Design C Course: No report. From the Audience for Follow-Up: Starts with no or only 2-3 starts are delaying the days racing for all the other boats. Can DRYA look at consolidating starts? [Tony Schornnak NSSC]
•
One Design Offshore: Rod Spearin heard that J105 fleet might be sailing PHRF (he will follow-up) but the other 4 classes, C&C 35, Beneteau 36.7, NA40 and J120 want to continue with one design starts and scoring for this year.

PHRF: Brian Lang reports that the greater percentage of Page 1 of 3

boats are sailing PHRF, with more boats coming from the other rating types. •
IRC: Dale MacPherson reported that there are still 7 boats racing IRC with most of them very serious racers and out almost every week.
Classic Boat Race: Jeff DeSandre from DYC presented the planned Detroit Classic Boat Regatta to be th
hosted by the DYC on June 16 , 2012. Invites are for any pre-1970 boats or any wooden boat. Race course is from Windmill Point, into the lake, finishing off the DYC. Overnight mooring is available at DYC which will be hosting its annual Antique Car & Boat Show the next day. More information can found at www.detroitclassicboat.com.
Multi-Sail Plan: Vice Commodore Coleman presented the committee’s recommendation (David Spiers, Brian Lang, Mike McGuire, Bob Schappe, Ed Theisen, Nick Geisz, David Coleman) that will be presented to th the Executive Committee at their next meeting on March 15 for their approval. David Spiers presented details on the generation of offsets for the credits. Recommendations: 1) Continue using a modified Multi Sail Plan for 2012 based on individual VPP data and boat assessment data. 2) Implement with database input for scoring administration and show the designated offset on the provided Certificate. 3) MSP will allow racer to notify the race committee before their 5 min warning gun is signaled. 4) Racer must stay in same class (even if JAM credit is outside the designated range with respect to the base rating). 5) All racers must fly the appropriate class flag (or their results are subject to protest by other competitors). 6) All racers not sailing their designated sail configuration must also fly a yellow streamer off their backstay. There will likely be 1 IRC start for the 2012 season. From the Audience for Follow-Up: The downwind offset calculation of 9 to 18 seconds seems way too high. [Terry Stuck BYC] From the Audience for Follow-Up: The 1/3:1/3:1/3 Calculation Rule does not represent the actual type of racing that we do – Section 15 should be changed. [Terry Stuck BYC] From the Audience for Follow-up: Provide the DRYA Handbook on the DRYA website. [Dave Coleman DYC] From the Audience: JAM fleet should sail shorter course to not delay racing of the faster fleets. From the Audience for Follow-Up: Want to see more Windward-Leeward. [Terry Stuck BYC] Vice Commodore David Coleman and Dave Spiers will accept email from anyone that would like to provide additional feedback.
