Nari Shashktikaran in Gujarat: From Grassroots to Growth
Women are the foundation of any society, yet for decades, their potential has remained underutilized—especially in rural and underserved areas. The Nari Shashktikaran (Women Empowerment) initiative by SSSK is transforming this narrative by uplifting women in both remote and urban communities of Gujarat. Through customized programs in Ambaji, Banaskantha, Mehsana, Abu Road, and Ahmedabad, we are creating opportunities for thousands of women to lead better, more independent lives. Ambaji: Empowering Tribal Women with Skills and Support The tribal areas of Ambaji have long struggled with poverty, illiteracy, and limited access to development resources. Our Nari Shashktikaran program here focuses on basic literacy, health awareness, and skill-building. Key highlights: Literacy programs for adult women Health and hygiene awareness drives Stitching and handicraft training for income generation Women’s support groups for community development By fostering a sense of self-worth and ability, the women of Ambaji are starting to change their families' futures. Banaskantha: Supporting Rural Entrepreneurs
Banaskantha is an agricultural region where women work hard but are often excluded from financial and social decisionmaking. Our initiative builds their capacity to become financially independent and confident contributors to the local economy. Program features: Training in dairy farming and small business skills Workshops on food preservation, tailoring, and handicrafts Financial literacy sessions and bank linkage support Awareness sessions on women’s rights and safety Women here are now leading their own businesses, supporting their families, and inspiring others. Mehsana: Educating for a Stronger Tomorrow Mehsana’s women are eager to grow, but lack of access to proper education and digital skills often holds them back. Our programs here focus on education and technology. What we offer: Digital literacy programs for young women and mothers After-school coaching for girls at risk of dropping out Sessions on nutrition, menstrual health, and self-care Career guidance and leadership workshops
Women in Mehsana are now learning how to use smartphones, access online services, and apply for jobs or run small online businesses. Abu Road: Bringing Empowerment to the Last Mile In the remote corners of Abu Road, infrastructure and outreach are limited. But our mobile teams are reaching these women with life-changing tools. Our efforts include: Mobile vans for skill development (tailoring, beauty, crafts) Awareness on maternal health and children’s education Self-help circles for women to discuss issues and share solutions Local leadership training for peer support Abu Road’s women are now more aware, skilled, and confident in advocating for themselves and their families. Ahmedabad: Urban Empowerment for Low-Income Women In the fast-paced city of Ahmedabad, many low-income women face challenges such as domestic violence, lack of education, and economic instability. Our city program offers modern, skills-based solutions. Key initiatives: Entrepreneurship training in beauty, fashion, food, and tech Financial aid and micro-loan support for new businesses
Legal counseling and support groups for abuse survivors Job readiness programs including resume and interview training Women are now launching their own ventures, contributing to the economy, and taking control of their lives. What Makes Our Nari Shashktikaran Program Different? While many programs adopt a one-size-fits-all model, our approach is location-specific and community-driven. Each region's needs are different, and our programs are carefully tailored to maximize impact: Ambaji and Abu Road: Focus on access, literacy, and culturesensitive outreach Banaskantha: Emphasis on income-generating skills and economic independence Mehsana: Digital inclusion and continued education Ahmedabad: Urban resilience, legal rights, and entrepreneurship Real Change, Real Stories A group of tribal women in Ambaji now sells handmade crafts at local fairs In Banaskantha, women farmers have banded together to market organic vegetables In Ahmedabad, a woman trained through our program now employs three others in her home salon
