COMMODORE’S REPORT Bryan Cox
Over the past couple of years I have used my report as a vehicle to promulgate my reports to the general meetings to all the members through my monthly report. Accordingly, set out hereunder is the report I presented to the Half Yearly meeting held on the 12th March in the club rooms. Before I say more may I express my disappointment at the poor attendance at the meeting which failed to have a quorum at the appointed time and required us to approach several members who happened to be on the premises at the time to attend to enable the meeting to proceed? This is the second year in a row that this has occurred and leads me to believe that holding a half yearly meeting is unnecessary. Since my report to you at the AGM last September we have started to see the Woodman Point Recreational Boating Precinct become a reality with the building of 4 new public ramps adjacent to the existing public ones together with associated roadways, the creation of a new Car park for some 300 cars with trailers to the east of the existing public car park and the lowering of the existing park to a level close to that of our parking areas. Further I am told that the existing Jervoise Close roadway will be reformed, drained and resurfaced from the junction with the road to the end of Woodman Point to the entrance to the public car parks and down to the groyne With all these changes taking place it is imperative that the CPBA maintain its position as "the better option" for all those boaties utilising the precinct . While it will be said that we do not need any more members, failure to maintain our standards will only result in our club sliding backwards and losing members over the coming years. At the beginning of 2009 we started the project to replace the club house roof when, due to the failure of one of our jetties, we had to change our priorities. As you know we replaced all of our jetties with floating style docks which we paid for out of our accumulated funds. Unfortunately this left nothing to fix the roof. In order to continue our roofing project your committee approved an approach to our bankers for a loan. To cut a long story short, our bankers suggested that as our lease only had a short time to run it would be advantageous if we renewed it with our new landlords, The Dept of Transport, before applying for the loan. Currently the new lease has been signed by us and is awaiting signature by the Minister before we can present a copy to our bank.. As a result of our approach to the Dept of Transport and a request by us for them to redraw the lease boundary to include that portion of land between our existing boundary and the road to the Groyne they have added, not all of the land but, a very significant part, to our lease and extended the lease to include ALL the land to the high water mark. As a result of this increase there will be changes to the parking arrangements in the club grounds, changes to the club entrance and exit arrangements and probably provision of some hardstand storage facilities for rental by members. Details of these changes are yet to be decided but members will be kept advised as decisions are made. Naturally all of these changes will involve cost which is part of the reason behind the motion tonight to impose a levy on members to replace the operating reserves of the club which were expended on the jetties. The club will also be applying for a loan from the bank shortly to effect the roof repairs. Since my report to you in September last year your club has continued to enjoy a busy social calendar and I must express my appreciation to Yvonne and her team for all they have organised during this period. I would particularly draw attention to the jetties opening function which was an absolute sell out success and the seafood sun-downer held recently which would have to have been one of , if not the, most successful yet – again full marks to the social committee for their efforts I would again take this opportunity to express my personal thanks to the club staff who through their dedication have made operation of the club both smooth and hassle free. And finally a very special thank you to the Flag Officers and general committee all of you have been outstanding in your enthusiasm and commitment to our club.
Have a happy Easter Happy Boating

I love it when the Weather Man gets it wrong. Like for our March dive, he forecast 18 –23 knots SE going 20 – 25 knots SW in the afternoon with 2.0 metre seas and 1.5 metre swell. Not much to look forward to, and not bad enough to cancel the dive. Three boats turned up somewhat delayed by the closure of the Freeway for the Mandurah bike ride, but still keen to keep the cray competition points clicking over. Indeed the ocean looked quite bumpy, and early returning boats confirmed that it was ‘a bit rough round Garden Island’, however we decided that seeing as we were here, we should go and have a look-see. A dive site was selected N.W. and close to Carnac island where there was a bit of lee protection and entered the water from wildly bucking boats. Once below the surface conditions were surprisingly pleasant, given that we had just come off a week of three metre swells. Visibility was out to about 8 metres and surge was negligible (the crays were also negligible)! Plenty of marine life ranging from starfish, urchins, wrasse, Skippy, and juvenile Jewfish made this quite an enjoyable dive, Once back onboard our boat we found that the Weather Man had really got the forecast wrong, by now the wind had swung to the South and dropped to a perfect 10 knots. Definitely worth another dive, this time down towards Mewstone and a bit cleaner water. Here I picked a pretty poor spot with low reef and thick weed patches. After 15 minutes of fossiking around looking under low ledges, Mary and I decided to pull the pin and move to another spot to use our remaining air. Fortunately, I had a nearby spot in my GPS, which I knew to be quite spectacular, ledges running from 4 metres down to 12 metres with sand areas sprinkled with low bombies. If I were a crayfish, this is where I would spend my summer vacation. Unfortunately, crayfish are a lot smarter than I am and were holidaying elsewhere – all except two! Oh well that’s enough to weigh in for the comp. Still, it was a pretty dive, and crayfish are not everything (wash my mouth out, what am I saying!). Having said that there were few crays around; our ‘Bubbles-boat’ managed to bag out – good effort guys. Dave M showed that quality, not quantity counts, weighing in a 99 mm cray. That puts him equal first for Largest Cray so far. From what started as a pretty dodgy day as forecast, we ended up with great dive and boating day.
That’s it from me

Next Busy Bee Saturday 10th April 2010 8.30 am
The March Busy Bee saw a roll up of 12 or more willing workers. It didn’t take long to get them organised into a couple of teams. Colin’s to look after the listed jobs and Roy’s to look after the removal of the tree. With Roy as our airborne chainsaw man, he soon had branches falling in all directions. As there was no shortage of chainsaws these branches were soon cut smaller and loaded into the skip. Unfortunately the 6 metre skip we ordered was not 6 metres long; it was 6 cubic metres capacity. Not to worry, we decided to help the contractors working on the public car park; seeing they had a pile of tree branches close by we added our surplus to it. Unfortunately their supervisor was not very impressed. Ian and his trusty Toyota Ute came to the rescue. A couple of good loads down to the local tip and we were back on track. By midday, thanks to everyone’s efforts, most jobs were completed. We would like to acknowledge one of our life members who is a regular at our busy bees; George Webb. George, at the age of 93 years has recently relinquished his drivers license and now makes the journey from Palmyra to our club on his ‘Gopher’. This round journey would be fairly close to 24 kilometres. Good on you George, you are a real inspiration and we look forward to seeing you at our next busy bee.

Sportfishing Report Angus Boult-Lyne
Fishing Competition March 2010 Participating boats were Bushranger (Des Kelly) and Stormboy 2 (Peter Anderton). On Bushranger Fred caught a Dhufish which he released, Huw caught a 70 cm Dhufish and Des caught a Big King George Whiting and a Black Arse. Peter reported that he caught several big herring.
Karratha Trip in 2011 Preliminary inquiries are being made with accommodation facilities in the Karratha area including caravan parks. The thinking at this stage is that efforts should be made to arrange a trip to coincide with the Nickol Bay Sportsfishing Club’s Bill Fishing weekend in June/July 2010. Club members who are interested in participating should attend the monthly meetings or inquire with Peter Anderton.
Other Proposed Events West End and Beyond A proposed fishing trip to the West End of Rottenest and a trip to the 360 metre line west of Rottenest are still under consideration and club members interested should attend the meetings or contact Peter Anderton. Tight Lines
Angus Boult-Lyne Next Competition: The April 2010 competition will be held on Saturday or Sunday 10 & 11 April 2010. For those interested, the fishing hours are from Midnight on Friday to 2 pm on Sunday. There will be no weigh in as the competition will be conducted under the new rules that takes account of the length of the fish. Reports can be presented to Luke Sanders or put in the club letter box. Next Fishing Group Meeting: The next Fishing Group Meeting will be held on Monday 19 April 2010 at 7.30 pm at the club. There are no formal application processes for club members – just show up on the day and you are one of us.

Jurien Bay Field Trip 2010 A group of 9 boats and 22 members made the annual trip to Jurien Bay over the weekend of 19th – 22nd March. Hopes were high for weather conditions better than last year. Although an improvement on the conditions of 2009, Saturday was rough with 18 knot SE to S winds lightening to 10 knots by midday. Sunday dawned with an improved forecast that did not eventuate with moderate winds experience offshore all day. Conditions deteriorated with the mid afternoon development of an exceptional storm similar to the one that hit Perth late on Monday. In spite of the not so good weather conditions some individual good catches and not so good catches were made:John Marston 84cm Dhufish Richard Forsyth 70cm Pink Snapper Des Kelly 5 Fugues and 1 rock Mark Seares 63 cm Pink Snapper Barry Walsh 54 cm Baldchin Groper On the social side a great Saturday night dinner with 19 members was held at the Sandpiper Bar & Grill. Sunday BBQ at the Commodore’s unit although dampened by thunder, lightning and heavy rain (fortunately no hail) was also a great success with 18 members in attendance. Prizes for the competition over the two days went to:Overall Parakeet R. Howell Saturday Polly B. Cox Sunday Majek M. Sanders Many thanks were expressed to Luke Sanders for his work on the results sheets and Mike Sanders for his deft hand at the BBQ. It was suggested that a letter of thanks be written to the Jurien Bay Sea Rescue Group for the excellent coverage given to our boats. Some suggestions for the weekend have been received and will be adopted for next year’s trip. Overall it was a great trip and thankyou to all who attended.
