Disease Detectives look for ways that disease is spread. In our Science Olympiad Events we can expect to experience anything from food borne illnesses to investigating how pathogens spread from one human to another. This category is wide open and will require a lot of creative thinking and deductive reasoning. During our training exercise we will discuss how food contaminants are spread. We'll use a product called Glow Germs (http://www.buyemp.com/product/glo-germ-153-handwashing-training-kit2? gclid=CjwKEAiAlvilBRC5ueCzkpXb4kgSJADxop1BjIk7chdKSoLABo3Y49fucgSx7nS53_HBIkSF1jJaRoCgtDw_wcB) to illustrate this process. Glow Germs are powder simulated germs and are used by health care workers to improve hand washing and sanitation practices. They are often used in school health lessons to illustrate hygiene practices. Glow Germs are a non toxic powder that glows when a black light is shined on it. Our students will be using it as they simulate a food preparation activity. You may see a little white powder residue on their hands or clothing this week. It will wash away easily. I have had a great time with your students in Science Olympiad this year. I hope they have learned a lot so far. We have training sessions through February 5th. During Science Olympiad Training time beginning at 7:10am on February 3rd (3rd grade), 4th(4th grade) and 5th(5thgrade) students will be given a paper and pencil test covering the topics that we have addressed during our morning training sessions. This test will be 20 questions. Students may study using the links provided on the Science Olympiad Blog. http://www.mbesmediacenter.com/science-olympiad (https://webmail.fultonschools.org/owa/redir.aspx? SURL=UOfNKIf1W5H3CxHLuQQnz_k7Gjd8EB2NB3m1fHrzraJHp647kwHSCGgAdAB0AHAAOgAvAC8AdwB3AHcAL gBtAGIAZQBzAG0AZQBkAGkAYQBjAGUAbgB0AGUAcgAuAGMAbwBtAC8AcwBjAGkAZQBuAGMAZQAtAG8AbAB5 AG0AcABpAGEAZAA.&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.mbesmediacenter.com%2fscience-olympiad) Students must be present at the session for their grade level on February 3rd (3rd grade) , 4th (4th grade) or 5th(5th grade) beginning at 7:10am. If they are not present they will not be able to participate in the competition. No makeups will be offered. We have to turn in our rosters asap for the county competition so we cannot make any exceptions for students who miss these dates. During Science Olympiad training the week of January 26th, students will receive a study activity to take home. This is due by 7:40 am on the day of their grade level’s competition (3rd Grade- February 3, 4th Grade-February 4th, 5th Grade- February 5th). This study activity is worth up to 10 points. Assignments are due by 7:40 on the day of the student’s grade level competition. No late assignments will be accepted! We have relaxed the rule that students must attend 7 sessions since the Fulton County roster deadline has forced me to cut the last session and there have been so many serious illnesses (including my own which resulted in cancelled sessions) So, students will receive a point for each session that they have attended. So, all students are eligible to take the competition test at their grade level competition at 7:10 on February 3rd(3rd grade), 4th (4th grade) or 5th(5th grade) 40 students will be chosen for two science Olympiad teams. These two teams will attend the Fulton County Science Olympiad Competition on March 21st at Centennial High School. We will take the 13 highest scoring students from 3rd and 4th grade and the 14 highest scoring students from 5th grade. (Scores will include test scores from our grade level session competitions, points given for attendance and points given for the study assignment.) If your student cannot attend the competition on March 21st please let me know so they can be removed from consideration for the team. The 40 students who are chosen for the Science Olympiad teams will continue to attend training sessions every Tuesday and Wednesday morning so we can get ready for the Fulton County Competition. Please discuss these activities with your student and encourage them to study. All of the science Olympiad events are included on the Science Olympiad Blog so you and your student can get a good idea of what the competition will entail. http://www.mbesmediacenter.com/science-olympiad (https://webmail.fultonschools.org/owa/redir.aspx? Science Olympiad will meet in the library this week. This week we are studying the night sky. You'll need to know information about the stars, constellations, the phases of the moon, the planets and much much more. Take some time on your own to have a look at some of the resources below. We also have a lot of great books in the library. We're going to take a quiz during Science Olympiad practice today. So, you and your partner will need to go to the following link on your ipad when you are instructed to do so. Enter the code that you see at the front of the room and then enter a nickname that has something to do with the night sky(remember that we are using a social network. Your nickname must be appropriate for all to see) kahoot.it (http://kahoot.it) Some great study resources... http://kwisscience.weebly.com/starry-starry-night.html (http://kwisscience.weebly.com/starry-starrynight.html) Find the constellation Game... http://www.kidsastronomy.com/astroskymap/constella tion_hunt.htm (http://www.kidsastronomy.com/astroskymap/constell ation_hunt.htm) Nasa for Kids.. http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/menu/space/ (http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/menu/space/) Scholastic Study Jams http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/scien ce/solar-system/universe.htm (http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/scie nce/solar-system/universe.htm) Quizlet Vocabulary Practice (http://quizlet.com/48706784/science-olympiad-starrystarry-night-flash-cards/) Starry Starry Night Practice Test (http://www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/cms/lib3/GA01000373/C entricity/Domain/262/StarryStarry%20Night_Practice% 20Test.pptx) Starry Night Test (http://www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/cms/lib3/GA01000373/C entricity/Domain/262/StarryNightTest.pdf) Starry Night Answer Sheet (http://www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/cms/lib3/GA01000373/C entricity/Domain/262/StarryNightAnswerKey.pdf) More Starry Night Practice (http://www.washington.sgusd.k12.ca.us/res_view_fol der.aspx?id=66d32160-e2d6-4d1b-a18cf2f9944960bf&userGroupId=449aa94c-9b86-48c3-a11a36bf585c5f79&userGroup) Fact Monster (http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0769132.html) Moon Phases (http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/moon/phases .html) Kids Astronomy (http://www.kidsastronomy.com/index.htm) NASA for Kids (http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/menu/space/) Study Jams (http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/scie nce/solar-system/universe.htm)
You are going to love mystery architecture! Each group will be given a collection of materials. These materials will be unknown to the students prior to the competition event.
The objective is to build the tallest, steadiest structure that you can using the materials provided. And... your structure must be free standing and must be able to support the weight of a tennis ball. It's not as easy as it sounds!
You will be allowed to cut or alter the materials in any way but you can't alter the tennis ball and you may only use the materials provided to you by the event coordinator.
Can't wait to see your architecture this week!

Our bridge building activity was a lot of fun. Remember that the training exercises are an adaptation of the activities that students will be doing during the real Science Olympiad Competitions. I'm sending home a copy of the actual activity so your child will know what to expect and maybe they could even practice some. All it takes is some straws and a little masking tape. The Science Olympiad will ask them to build the biggest, strongest suspension bridge structure possible. Be sure to have a look at the actual event description that are linked on the Olympiad Events Listing button on to the right of this post. Our training adaptation had limits that students will not experience in the actual competition. Longest and strongest will be the competitive goal.
