The technique to fabricate a platter or a bowl is almost identical. A platter is essentially a shallow or flat bowl. A woodblock spins on a wood lathe at a high speed and a sharp tool peels away layers of wood. Once the shape is complete more time is spent with finishing which is sanding to make the piece come to life and have that tactile feel that makes it unique.

The final steps of sanding, buffing, polishing and applying a food-safe protective coating is to make each piece unique and special. This platter will require little maintenance. It is best to keep it out of direct sunlight. Minimize exposure to wide swings in humidity levels. Do not wash with water, if necessary use a damp cloth. And finally wax lightly with a quality food safe wax or oil and buff to restore luster. Beeswax, olive oil or mineral oil work fine. This has inspired me to experiment beyond my comfort zone with color, carving and techniques borrowed from other art forms. Major influences in my work come from studying art history and twentieth century masters. Viewing nature and observing simple and elegant forms, textures and patterns have inspired organic relevance that can all be seen throughout my work.

I studied design and earned a master’s degree in Package Design from Pratt Institute. Then I founded two companies, Source Packaging and Cases by Source, which produce custom packaging for everything from aircraft instruments to medical devices.
