5 Stages of IVF Explained In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a ground-breaking technology for couples who’ve tried all possible conservative treatment options to conceive but failed. Millions of babies have been born in the world since the first IVF baby in 1978. This medically advanced technology has turned the dream of parenthood into reality for many couples. It’s conducted in five stages at an IVF centre in Mulund, each carefully performed to ensure the highest possible success rate. In this post, we’ll walk you through ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo transfer, and pregnancy—the five crucial stages of IVF.
Stage 1: Ovarian Stimulation The journey begins with ovarian stimulation, a procedure that triggers your ovaries to produce multiple eggs in one menstrual cycle. Generally, ovaries release a single mature egg. Ovarian stimulation involves hormonal injections administered for 8-14 days. During this period, the IVF specialist in Mulund will conduct ultrasounds and regular blood tests to track the follicle growth. Monitoring is a crucial step in this stage, as it allows your doctor to know how well the ovaries are responding and schedule the perfect time for egg retrieval.
Stage 2: Egg Retrieval Once the follicles have reached an optimal size (16-20mm), a minor surgical procedure to retrieve the eggs is scheduled. Timing matters the most here, as the final shot is administered for egg maturation. The retrieval is scheduled 34-36 hours after this shot. It’s a minimally invasive procedure performed under anesthesia. You are sedated, so you don’t feel any discomfort. The surgeon inserts a thin needle through the vagina to collect the mature eggs. It’s performed under ultrasound guidance. Egg retrieval is a short procedure, lasting 15-30 minutes. You can expect to go home the same day.
Stage 3: Fertilization The next step is fertilization, in which the eggs and sperm are combined to form an embryo. This can be done through natural fertilization, where the gametes are placed together in a culture dish, and the fusion occurs naturally, or through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) — injecting the sperm cell into an egg manually. The embryologist checks each egg and picks the one that’s developed into a good-quality embryo.
Stage 4: Embryo Culture The developing embryos are then kept in a controlled lab environment where their growth is monitored for several days. The embryologist closely observes embryos to check how well they form and divide. They are considered ready for transfer once they have reached the blastocyst stage, which sometimes occurs on Day 5 or 6.
Stage 5: Embryo Transfer The last stage of IVF is embryo transfer. Once the embryologist has picked the most suitable embryos for transfer, they schedule this small, usually painless procedure. They use a thin catheter to transfer one or more embryos into the uterus carefully. The embryo is then supposed to attach to the uterine lining for implantation. You need to wait for two weeks after embryo transfer to check for pregnancy. If pregnancy is confirmed, the gynecologist will run ultrasounds and other tests to monitor early pregnancy and ensure smooth progress.
