Dear Friends, I am very pleased to present to you the 2011-2012 Annual Report. As you glance through the report you will notice many figures, statistics and percentages. I am sure that you realize that these are measurements of the Beaumont story, but not the heart of the Beaumont story. They are ways to measure the success of our school but they do not contain the essence of who we are. At the heart of the Beaumont story are the girls! That is the reason for our existence as we educate them for life, leadership and service. The story does not stop there. It flows on into our dedicated staff and faculty who make unbelievable sacrifices to continue the Ursuline mission of education. It continues on into our parents, alumnae and friends who also recognize the importance of our mission and are quick to support it. Their prayers, their encouragement, and their financial support make all the difference in the story of Beaumont. As you read through this financial report, strive to see it as a measurement of the living history of the Beaumont tradition which has existed since 1850, seventy years this year at the corner of Fairmount and Lee. We thank you for your prayers and support of our efforts here at Beaumont. We look forward with you to the continued development of the rich tradition of Beaumont School.

academics S
tudents of all academic abilities continue to thrive at Beaumont. At the Baccalaureate Mass at year’s end, the recognition and honors the girls have accumulated over their career at Beaumont are lengthy and impressive with achievements in math and science, language, writing, music, fine arts and more. Out of the classroom, scholarship continues through clubs from the Pre-Engineer Club to the Drama Club, and from business and entrepreneurial activities to the language clubs, French, Latin and Spanish. Service remains an integral part of the Beaumont experience. While all students are required to complete 80 hours of service before graduation, the girls always exceed the minimum requirement, doubling the amount of hours spent working for organizations throughout Northeast Ohio, and through mission trips to El Salvador and Honduras. The Class of 2012, for example, completed 17,770 service hours over four years. (The minimum would have been 8,800.)
service
Popular Service Projects include Christmas on Campus, in which innercity children come to Beaumont for an afternoon of games, snacks and “shopping” (with a ticket system) for their parents and siblings. Fall of 2011 was the inaugural year for the All-School Service Day, a day in which all students and faculty members are out of class and working somewhere in the area – at non-profit organizations, nursing homes, and for some, right at Beaumont, beautifying the campus. The All-School Service Day is sure to become an annual high point for the entire Beaumont community.

t
he 2011 – 2012 school year saw the culmination of the faculty’s dream to offer an entirely new level of education, exploration and enrichment to Beaumont students. The Academic Scholars started with 53 students in 9th and 10th grade and grew in one year to 77 students in 9th, 10th and 11th grades. This year the program will have about 100 girls, fully a quarter of the school. Academic Scholars, girls who achieve unilaterally in the 90th percentile, take advantage of field trips guest speakers and mentoring opportunities, exploring topics from botany to glass making to genetics. The school year also saw the advent of the Pre-Engineering program and a club for girls who are interested in pursuing a career in the sciences. A team of students competed in the AWT RoboBot competition for the first time with the support of their sponsor, Christopher Tool in Solon. The “Beaumontsters” defeated all its challengers, coming in second place after a split decision from the judges in the tied last round. An article in the September, 2012 edition of Cleveland Magazine featured this group of future problem solvers and their ability to apply lessons learned from the classroom and the lab to create a winning robot, named Deus ex Machina.
science
In more conventional Science competitions, Beaumont students continued the tradition of garnering many prizes with a Gold medal, 5 Silver Medals, 5 Bronze Medals and an Honorable Mention in the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair. Beaumont students received 21 of the 82 sponsored professional awards, gaining accolades not only for their science projects, but for their demonstrated presentation skills to the judges as well. Ten students advanced to the Ohio Science Day in May at The Ohio State University and all received awards. 2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT

The James P. and Catherine E. Conway Scholarship Fund When you think of true love, there are often certain people that come to mind. Jim and KT Conway were one of those couples. Married for 56 years, the Conway’s were loving parents to seven children (one Beaumont alumna, Jackie Conway Scanlon ’83) and grandparents to 11 (Beaumont current students, Anne Conway ’12 and Caroline Conway ’14). Their philanthropic support of Catholic entities was far reaching, including their parish GESU, the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland and Beaumont School. An attorney and Planned Giving/Development Specialist by trait, Jim was also generous to Beaumont by lending his fundraising expertise. The Conway’s were not only Beaumont Parents & Grandparents, but they were also financial supporters, and members of Beaumont’s Legacy Leaders – those special individuals who remember Beaumont in their estate plans. Our Beaumont community mourned the loss of Jim in September 2010 and of KT in June 2011. To honor both Jim and KT’s commitment to Beaumont and Catholic education, we are proud to establish the James P and Catherine E Conway Scholarship Fund to memorialize the generosity and kindness of a wonderful couple whose example will live on at Beaumont for years to come. This scholarship will provide financial support to young women who desire and deserve a Catholic education, rooted in the Ursuline tradition. 8

visit to Beaumont is an immersion in the Arts – there’s music in the halls, artwork on the walls and art and fashion projects spilling out of lockers and backpacks. The arts agenda is packed throughout the year! In fall, the Drama and Music departments presented Just So, a modern musical based on five Rudyard Kipling stories. After student directed One-Acts early in 2012, the girls concentrated on enacting the gritty Dead Man Walking, an examination of the death penalty in the United States. The play was the culmination of a school-wide project that included reading the book by Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, and an inspirational visit from the author herself.

The Voices of Harmony caroled at Judson Manor and shared the stage with the Benedictine’s Men’s Choir over the holidays. For an unprecedented third consecutive year, Voices was invited to the Greater Cleveland Catholic high School Choir Invitational held at St. John’s Cathedral. A number of singers from Beaumont were named OMEA Music All Stars (Ohio Music Education Association) and these girls’ names were announced on WCLV FM, Cleveland’s classical music station throughout the spring.

The Mary Rose Drechsler Stock ’48 Scholarship Fund The Beaumont Class of 1948 was, and remains, a close group of women. Even though 64 years have passed since they walked through the halls of Beaumont School for Girls, the bonds that were formed have remained. Classmates are proud of the fact that they faithfully met for lunch on a monthly basis for many years, keeping their close friendships intact. Mary Rose enjoyed her time at Beaumont School and the friendships that lasted for so many years after graduation. When Mary Rose passed away two years ago, her son Marty knew that honoring his mother’s love of Beaumont was the perfect thing to do. Marty established the Mary Rose Drechsler Stock ’48 Scholarship Fund to provide financial support to young women who desire a Beaumont education and the opportunity to make lifelong friendships. If Mary Rose were here today, we know she would tell our students to make the most of their high school years and live each day to its fullest. We honor the memory of Mary Rose – her good nature, sense of humor, love of friends and family and Beaumont School.

hether they play or not, every Beaumont student is a Blue Streak, and the accolades for these athletes just keep coming. In Basketball, Annie Bova ’12 was honored for scoring over 1,000 points as a Blue Streak over four years. Anna Brick ’12 set a new Beaumont Varsity Diving Record and placed in the OHSAA State Championships. Caitlin Lawless, ’12 qualified for the State Tennis Tournament in singles. It was her second trip to the state championship. The Beaumont Softball Team won the Grand Strand Classic in South Carolina in spring. The Grand Strand is a girls’ high school fast pitch tournament open to teams throughout the country. The Blue Streaks won all five of their games. And the Volleyball team made school history as the first team to reach the Final Four games in the state tournament. After an upset win at the Regional level, defeating the Division II State Champions, Lake Catholic, Beaumont competed at States at Wright State University in Dayton. The Cross Country team qualified for the District title in October, 2011. In Soccer, Beaumont is now the #2 seed and ranked #3 in the Greater Cleveland area Division II.

Sister Erin Zubal, OSU, was named the new Athletic Director for the Blue Streaks. “Beaumont fosters strong student-athletes who can win with class and lose with grace, she says. “Our history has shown that we have quality teams who can compete at a high level both within the North Coast League and beyond at the State Level. Although winning is important, it is equally important that we are fostering young women who are good teammates both on and off the playing field.” 2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT

Kathleen Mary McCarthy Hamilton ’65 “Spirit of Spring” Scholarship Kathy McCarthy began her high school career at Beaumont in the fall of 1961, ready to make her mark at Beaumont School for Girls. Years later, her husband John told Beaumont administration that it was Beaumont that made the lasting impression on Kathy. “Anytime a conversation concerning education ever came about, Kathy would always be the greatest defender of single sex education. She felt nothing could be a better training ground to help advance women than the education she received at Beaumont,” John said. Initially started in 2004 by Kathy’s brother Dennis, The Kathleen Mary McCarthy Hamilton ’65 “Spirit of Spring” Scholarship has recently reached the level of endowment that allows Beaumont to award this scholarship to deserving young women. The name of this scholarship came from Kathy’s love of spring; for it meant renewal and new beginnings. Kathy radiated the spirit of spring year in and year out, and she was most dedicated to keeping her circle of Beaumont friends close. We are honored that Kathy’s family and friends have continued to support this Scholarship Fund and that her love of Beaumont will be shared with other students for years to come. Kathy’s senior quote in the 1965 yearbook reads, “The great man is he who does not lose his child’s heart.” Beaumont is so very fortunate that Kathy never did. 14

The Lennon
House
From 1942 until 1964, Beaumont classes for juniors and seniors were held in the former home of Kenyon Painter. In 1964 this building became exclusively the convent for the Ursuline Sisters. In 2009 this building and its property became part of the Beaumont expansion.
Photo taken 20 12
During its history, the building has been called by several names. We have recently renovated this building and gave it a central position in Beaumont’s administration and operation. In recognition of the generous gifts of Edward and Catherine Lennon Lozick, we are giving a new name to this newly renovated structure. It will now be called The Lennon House, honoring Cathey, a1963 alum. 2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT

Beaumont School’s Inaugural Gala Saturday, April 13, 2013 Celebrating The Ursuline Tradition of Excellence in Educating Women for Life, Leadership and Service For the past 22 years Beaumont School has hosted an annual fundraiser, typically held in early spring, featuring live and silent auctions, cocktails and a sit down dinner. This fundraiser, initially referred to as the “Garda Gala” eventually became known as “The Mad Hatter.” For numerous years “The Mad Hatter “ worked diligently to raise money for the school. Alternating between venues, the Mad Hatter has “Made History” at the Museum of Natural History, “Raised the Bar” at the Lakeside Courthouse, “Went the Distance” at the Browns Stadium, “Stepped Out” at the Silver Grille, “Celebrated his 20th Birthday” at the InterContinental Hotel and most recently went “Continental” as he returned to the InterContinental Hotel. This year however the Mad Hatter will be officially renamed “The Beaumont Gala.” This title helps clarify the event for those not familiar with the school and will offer greater consistency in the coming years as we continue to come together as a community to celebrate Beaumont. Our hats are off to The Mad Hatter and we acknowledge his work and are grateful! The Beaumont Gala will be chaired by an independent committee of volunteers comprised of current parents, alumnae and friends of Beaumont. It is however an official school event and will be coordinated by the
school’s Development Office. Although primarily a fundraiser to help keep tuition as affordable as possible, we believe the Gala will prove to be a communitybuilding tool that will enable us to develop and maintain important connections with a network of parents, past parents, friends and alumnae, as well as prospective parents and members of the larger community. As with any fundraiser, volunteer help is greatly needed and appreciated. There are numerous ways to lend your support to The Beaumont Gala. • Volunteer for a Committee • Donate or Secure an Auction Item. • Place or Solicit an Ad for the Auction Catalog. • Host a Procurement Party Procurements Parties are small socials given throughout the year in which attendees bring an auction item for the Gala in lieu of a hostess gift. • Secure Corporate or Personal Sponsorships • Plan on Attending the Event! Please check the Beaumont website www.beaumontschool.org for updates and forms. Questions? Contact Veronica Selby 216-325-7316;

Margaret Supp Connell Scholarship Fund Margaret Supp Connell began her career at Beaumont School in 1982 as a social studies teacher. She taught the same at Villa Angela Academy before making Beaumont her home. Peggy served Beaumont School in a myriad of ways as Academic Dean, Guidance Department Chairperson, Director of Curriculum, Assistant Principal, and Principal. As the first lay principal, she supported Beaumont’s Catholic identity, Ursuline traditions and academic excellence as established by her predecessors. When she decided to retire in 2010, a scholarship was started in her name to honor the leadership and guidance she gave to each and every person in the Beaumont community. After six short months of retirement, Peggy answered the call of her Beaumont family and came back to lead the Guidance Department through the 11-12 school year. Peggy spent her time at Beaumont making sure that graduates were ready for the demands of the twenty first century, and worked closely and collaboratively with faculty and students to make sure that individual talents and strengths were appreciated and developed as fully as possible. With the support of her family and friends, Peggy’s legacy will live on in the form of the Margaret Supp Connell Scholarship Fund to honor the contributions made during her 30 years of dedicated service to Beaumont School.

The Merici Fund Many young girls hope to be able to attend Beaumont School for their high school education. Unfortunately, many families struggle financially and have a hard time being able to afford the annual tuition at Beaumont. Since attracting and retaining qualified students at Beaumont is at the forefront of the school’s efforts, a special fund has been created by generous Beaumont benefactors, Peter and Rita Murphy ’71 Carfagna to assist in maintaining the level of financial assistance awarded to families throughout their four years at Beaumont School. The Merici Fund, named after the Ursuline Sister’s foundress, Sister Angela Merici, allows students who strive to maintain strong academic levels at Beaumont School to continue to benefit from an excellent education, rooted in the Ursuline traditions for four years. Through the generosity of the Carfagna’s and other dedicated supporters of Beaumont, we will continue to grow this necessary fund to support the young women of today and tomorrow – who want to be challenged with an education that will prepare them for life, leadership and service. We are proud to have the support and guidance of benefactors who understand the strength and benefits of a Beaumont education. 18

Courtyard Renovation & Pavers 2011 – 12 saw the transformation of Beaumont’s Courtyard from “nice green space” to a fully interactive outdoor center integral to the campus, perfect for a little quiet time in the sun, a lunch area, an outdoor classroom or just as a place to meet friends. Over the course of 24 months, the Courtyard was renovated. Walkways were built. A labyrinth was installed, courtesy of The Fathers’ Guild. The Catherine E. Abel ’96 Gathering Space was established under Beaumont’s famous lyre pine tree, and Richard Moroscak supported the St. Angela Merici Piazza in memory of his wife, Kathy Ireland Moroscak ’58. Internationally-renown sculptor Norbert Koehn carved a near-life size statue of St. Angela Merici out of granite and the statue, installed in the Piazza in January, 2012, was supported by Marge Krupansky in honor of her sister, Sr. John Mary Blaser, OSU, who served as a teacher and principal at Beaumont from 1969 to 1980. (More photos are available on Beaumont’s website, at www.beaumontschool.org.) With 150 people in attendance, the Courtyard was dedicated on May 21, 2012 with prayers and presentations by administrators and teachers. Populating the Courtyard continues, with Beaumont family and friends dedicating benches and paving stones to the space. In November students planted bulbs and planting and seasonal decorating of the Piazza is ongoing. To support the Courtyard, patrons can contact Barbara DiTurno, Development Director at Beaumont School. To create a paver, and have a little piece of Beaumont dedicated to your family or friends, see the form at right.

Golf Classic 2011 Beaumont’s annual golf outing was held at Acacia Country Club Over 60 golfers enjoyed lunch, the links and a reception afterwards on a beautiful Monday in September. Much appreciation goes to the events chairs, sisters Melissa Thayer Davis ‘66 and Deborah Thayer Testa ’70 for their commitment and enthusiasm for the event. The Golf Classic is an event hosted by the Beaumont Alumnae Association. Through generous contributions, such as proceeds from the Golf outing, the Alumnae Association raises funds to support Beaumont’s commitment to educate young women for life, leadership and service by offering scholarships to those in need. Special thanks to the Event Sponsor, Rhodes Residential Security – Bob and Mary Lee Julian Rhodes ’70, and additional sponsors Kelley & Ferraro, Stan and Melissa Davis and Van Auken Akins Architects.

reunion weekend 2012 Beaumont offers several opportunities for alumnae to return to campus every year, from the Liturgy for Deceased Alumnae in November to the Christmas party in December, honoring the women of the St. Angela Merici Society (those who graduated 50, 55, 60 and 65 years ago) to the annual summer reunion . This year, the classes of “2” and “7” celebrated their 5, 10, 15, 20th, etc. year with a gathering for alumnae only on Friday, then a wide variety of Class activities on Saturday, after a Liturgy on campus for all alumnae. Beaumont is proud of its rich legacy of alumnae not only returning to the school for reunions, parties and events, but the continuing support of the women who exemplify the Beaumont traditions of life, leadership and service.
