The
Renaissance of Learning
I
ndia’s educational domain is experiencing a renaissance of sorts, with a renewed focus on liberal arts education. This resonates deeply with the nation’s rich intellectual heritage, harkening back to the ancient Gurukula system that emphasized a holistic education encompassing philosophy, literature and science. Previously overshadowed by a system prioritizing vocational training, liberal arts in India is reclaiming its rightful place. This shift is driven by several factors. Firstly, employers are increasingly seeking graduates with wellrounded skillsets. Critical thinking, effective communication and the ability to adapt to a robust and advancing world—all hallmarks of a liberal arts education—are becoming essential for success in a globalized economy. Secondly, a new generation of Indians craves a deeper intellectual engagement with the world. They seek an education that goes beyond rote learning and equips them to understand complex issues, form their own opinions, and contribute meaningfully to society.
This renaissance is not a imitation of Western models. Indian institutions are tailoring liberal arts programs to their unique context. Courses incorporate the rich collection of Indian history, philosophy, and literature fostering a sense of national identity alongside a global perspective. The road forward isn’t without challenges. Making quality liberal arts education accessible to a wider population remains a concern. However, the growing number of institutions offering these programs coupled with a shift in societal attitudes, paints a promising picture. India’s renewed embrace of liberal arts education has the potential to empower a new generation of critical thinkers, effective communicators, and responsible citizens shaping a brighter future for the nation. In this edition, titled “The Most Renowned Liberal Arts Institutes in India, 2024,” we highlight the institutions at the forefront of this educational renaissance. These institutes are preserving the essence of liberal arts education and innovating to meet the needs of students and employers. Join us as we explore their unique approaches, impactful initiatives, and contributions to nurturing well-rounded individuals equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern world!

with complex social problems, while communication and collaboration strengthen as they work alongside diverse community members. Ultimately, a more engaged liberal arts education fosters graduates who are well-versed in various disciplines and equipped to be active and responsible citizens. They possess the critical thinking skills, empathy and problemsolving abilities needed to address societal challenges and drive meaningful social impact. This reimagined liberal arts education becomes a powerful tool for individual growth and for collective progress. Let’s know more about the concept of community engagement in the context of liberal arts education, highlighting the importance of extending learning beyond the ivory tower to create tangible benefits for society!
www.theknowledgereview.in | 19
The Importance of Community Engagement in Liberal Arts Community engagement is integral to the mission of liberal arts education for several reasons: • Real-World Application: Community engagement provides students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world contexts, enhancing their understanding and fostering practical skills. • Promoting Civic Responsibility: By engaging with communities, students develop a sense of civic responsibility and empathy, becoming active participants in addressing societal challenges. • Enhancing Learning Outcomes: Experiential learning through community engagement enriches students' educational experiences, leading to deeper learning and personal growth. Challenges and Barriers to Community Engagement Despite its benefits, community engagement in liberal arts education faces challenges: • Resource Constraints: Limited funding and institutional support can hinder efforts to establish sustainable community partnerships and initiatives. • Logistical Complexities: Overcoming logistical barriers such as transportation, scheduling, and coordination with community organizations requires dedicated effort and resources. • Perceived Academic Priorities: Some stakeholders may prioritize academic rigor and disciplinary excellence over community engagement, posing challenges for integrating engagement into curricular and co-curricular activities.
20 | April 2024
Strategies for Effective Community Engagement To maximize the impact of community engagement in liberal arts education, institutions can adopt strategic approaches: • Establishing Partnerships: Cultivating meaningful partnerships with local organizations, nonprofits, and government agencies facilitates collaborative projects and initiatives. • Integrating Service-Learning: Incorporating service-learning components into courses allows students to apply academic concepts while addressing community needs. • Supporting Faculty and Student Initiatives: Providing faculty and students with resources, training, and recognition for community engagement initiatives encourages sustained involvement and impact. Successful Community Engagement Initiatives Several liberal arts institutions have implemented innovative community engagement programs: • Community-Based Research Projects: Students collaborate with community partners to conduct research on local issues, contributing valuable insights and recommendations for action. • Public Service Internships: Internship programs connect students with public service agencies, providing hands-on experience and fostering professional development. • Civic Engagement Events: Workshops, forums, and public lectures promote dialogue and civic engagement on pressing social issues within and beyond the campus community.
Advancing Social Impact Moving beyond the ivory tower, liberal arts education can drive meaningful social impact by: • Empowering Students as Change Agents: Equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to become active contributors to positive social change. • Addressing Local and Global Challenges: Engaging with communities allows students and faculty to address complex societal challenges, such as poverty, inequality, environmental sustainability, and social justice. Conclusion Rethinking community engagement and social impact in liberal arts education is essential for fostering inclusive, ethical, and socially responsible citizens. By extending learning beyond the confines of academia and embracing partnerships with communities, liberal arts institutions can empower students to become agents of positive change. Looking ahead, the future of liberal arts education lies in its ability to cultivate meaningful connections between theory and practice, preparing students to address real-world challenges with empathy, creativity, and critical thinking. The future of community engagement in liberal arts education will be characterized by innovative approaches that integrate community-based learning into the curriculum, embrace interdisciplinary collaboration, and leverage technology to amplify impact. By prioritizing community engagement and social impact, liberal arts institutions can position themselves as catalysts for transformative change, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and societal needs in an increasingly interconnected world.

He is the man who brought all of the disciplines that make up a liberal arts institution under one roof and wrote a successful tale to establish this institute. In 2010, Dr Arvind Kumar Singh was appointed Chancellor of Noida International University. He was the youngest Chancellor of any university in history. Dr Singh employed and collaborated with thousands of business professionals over the course of his career. However, he always believed that a strong cultural fit or an insightful way of thinking is more important than a degree. The school nurtures this thought process at SLA. Presently the school is nurtured by Prof. (Dr.) Aparna Sharma, Dean, School of Liberal Arts, under the efficient leadership and guidance of Hon' Vice
Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Uma Bharadwaj, Noida International University. Fostering Mental Habits School of Liberal Arts made a significant contribution in terms of the upliftment of the institute. However, the school believes in the great potential that comes with a positive attitude. It succeeded, and all the concerns were gradually resolved under an apt leadership's guidance; the faculty members' diligent work and the appropriate use of approaches was the reason behind the school overcame all adversities.

The Crisis of Purpose
Reassessing the Relevance of
Liberal Arts Education in a Vocational Society
T
he value of liberal arts education is being challenged. In a world focused on vocational skills and immediate economic returns, the value proposition of a broad, humanities-based curriculum faces intense scrutiny. Critics question the ‘usability’ of courses in philosophy or literature, highlighting the perceived mismatch between liberal arts and the demands of the job market. However, this perspective overlooks the enduring strengths of a liberal arts education. While vocational training equips graduates for specific roles, a liberal arts education cultivates a more versatile skillset. Critical thinking, honed through analysing complex texts and dissecting arguments, translates seamlessly across industries. Effective communication is the foundation of liberal arts education that allows graduates to articulate ideas persuasively, a vital skill in any profession. Furthermore, exposure to diverse disciplines fosters creativity, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to adapt to evolving workplace demands. In a rapidly changing world, these are precisely the qualities that employers increasingly value.
Let’s join in on understanding the complex relationship between liberal arts education and vocationalism, exploring the crisis of purpose faced by liberal arts institutions and their students in today's vocational society. The Correlation: Crisis of Purpose The correlation between reassessing liberal arts education and the crisis of purpose in a vocational society is rooted in the shifting paradigms of education and employment.

This perceived crisis of purpose raises fundamental questions about the value and direction of liberal arts education in a world dominated by vocational demands.
today's world. Despite the abovementioned challenges, liberal arts education offers unique benefits and value:
Challenges Facing Liberal Arts Education Liberal arts education is facing challenges. Students question the value proposition in a job-focused market, while rising costs create pressure. Institutions must demonstrate the enduring benefits of critical thinking, communication, and broad knowledge in a progressing changing world. Some of them include:
•
•
•
•
Perceived Employability: Critics argue that liberal arts graduates may struggle to secure employment in competitive job markets that prioritize specialized skills over broad-based knowledge. Economic Justification: Rising tuition costs and student loan debts have led many to question the economic return on investment for liberal arts degrees compared to vocational or professional degrees. Changing Educational Priorities: As vocational training gains prominence, funding and resources for liberal arts programs may be diverted or reduced, leading to existential threats for liberal arts institutions.
Benefits and Value of Liberal Arts Education Liberal arts education, often associated with a broad range of subjects beyond pre-professional training, offers a unique and valuable set of benefits in

Critical Thinking and ProblemSolving: Liberal arts education cultivates essential skills such as critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving, which are highly transferable across diverse career paths. Creativity and Innovation: Liberal arts fosters creativity, imagination, and innovation, essential for adapting to rapidly changing industries and societal needs. Cultural and Global Understanding: Liberal arts promotes cultural awareness, empathy, and global citizenship, preparing students to navigate complex global challenges and diverse communities.
Reevaluating the Purpose of Liberal Arts Education In a world focused on job training, the purpose of liberal arts is up for debate. While critics see a lack of practical application, a re-evaluation reveals its enduring value. Liberal arts cultivate critical thinkers, effective communicators, and adaptable citizens - qualities that thrive in a dynamic world. To address the crisis of purpose, liberal arts education must reevaluate its goals and outcomes: •
•
Integration of Practical Skills: Liberal arts programs can integrate practical skills training, internships, and experiential learning opportunities to enhance graduates' employability and career readiness. Collaboration with Industry: Partnerships between liberal arts institutions and industries can bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application,
•
enhancing the relevance of liberal arts education in vocational settings. Advocacy and Communication: Educators, policymakers, and stakeholders must advocate for the intrinsic value of liberal arts education in fostering wellrounded individuals, critical thinkers, and engaged citizens.
Conclusion The reassessment of liberal arts education in a vocational society reflects a broader crisis of purpose facing higher education. As we navigate the demands of an increasingly vocational-driven society, it is essential to recognize and preserve the unique benefits and values of liberal arts education. Looking ahead, the future of liberal arts education lies in its ability to adapt, innovate, and demonstrate its relevance in addressing societal challenges and nurturing individuals with the skills, knowledge, and purpose to thrive in a rapidly changing world. The future of liberal arts education will be shaped by efforts to reconcile its philosophical foundations with practical vocational demands. Innovations in interdisciplinary curriculum design, digital learning technologies, and lifelong learning initiatives will empower liberal arts institutions to remain relevant and responsive to evolving societal needs. By embracing adaptability and fostering meaningful collaborations with industries and communities, liberal arts education can reclaim its purpose and contribute to shaping a more inclusive, empathetic, and intellectually vibrant society.

dominant institution of community service and academic excellence.
Traditionally, the education institutions were tasked with nurturing young minds in a holistic arc, making a complete circle, the symbol of indigenous harmony. That is the reason why Rabindranath Tagore said, "The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence."
Talking about the college's journey from an institution catering to serve the community to becoming one of the most prestigious liberal arts institutes, Dr Marie Fernandes, the Principal of St. Andrew's Colleges, also sheds some light on the administration, principles, and the core values of the institution.
While one part was making progress towards attaining literacy in the country, another part was struggling to access their fundamental rights easily. With a need seen for the advanced study of Arts, Science and Commerce in the community, the then Archbishop of Mumbai established St. Andrew's College.
Colouring the Empty Canvas Even though the foundation of the prestigious college was laid by St. Mother Theresa, the active functioning of the college started on 24 June 1983, when the Government of Maharashtra and the University of Bombay granted permission. Inaugurated by the then Archbishop Simon Pimenta, it was Msgr. Nereus Rodrigues, who first headed the college.
Inaugurating and unveiling the college to the world was done by the noble hands of St. Mother Theresa MC, Nobel Laureate. Slowly mapping its way to success and bringing every prominent course under its winds, St. Andrew's College, today, has become

the education sector. Dr Fernandes says, "Besides the tradition B.A and B.Com courses which were introduced at the start, BMS was started in 1999, BMM in 2002, B.Sc. (IT) in 2001, B.Com. (Accounts and Finance) in 2003, in 2007, B.Sc. (Hospitality Studies), in 2009, B.Com. (Banking & Insurance) in 2012, (M.Com.) and PhD Centre in English in 2016." A Home-grown Visionary Educator After completing her PhD in English,
Dr Marie Fernandes joined St. Andrew's College in 1992. Starting from the ground as a serious lecturer of English, it was in 2006 when she was appointed as the eighth Principal of the college. During her journey from being a lecturer who laid the seeds of ideas, innovation, liberty and freedom in the free minds, to spearheading those values and ideas in the institution, she was appointed as a Research Guide for

St. Andrew's College, she says, "Since I was passionate about research, I introduced the research culture in college. We have been organizing at least three major conferencesNational or International in college every year, from 2008- 2009, approximately 40 in all. This is done by the English and Economics Departments and our UNESCO/ Cardinal Paul Poupard Foundation Chair for Inter-Religious and InterCultural Dialogue established in 2009." "I also introduced the annual staff conference to encourage staff members to pursue research, and this has produced wonderful results, as our staff members attend conferences and present and publish papers very regularly," she further continues saying, "For our students too, we have a student seminar and a journal where their research papers are published. We encourage them to take part in Avishkar, the University Research competition where over 800 colleges participate." Attaining International Recognition for the Institute Being a college founded on the principles of serving the community, and the management under the able guidance of Dr Marie Fernandes, the college today is a significant institution of holistic education in liberal arts. Further asserting on St. Andrew's and her significant international achievements, she says, "I received the prestigious 'International Visitor's Leadership Award' from the US Department of State, to visit Colleges and Universities across the USA, from

1-19 February 2010. It was wonderful exposure, and we saw it first hand and interacted with prominent educationists and policymakers from different states." "In 2009, we signed an MOU and established the Chair Cardinal Paul Poupard Foundation Chair for Inter-Religious and Inter-Cultural Dialogue. In 2015 we received the UNESCO Chair for Inter-Religious and Inter-Cultural Dialogue with the Cardinal Paul Poupard Foundation," she further adds. Highlighting some of the major milestones set by the college, she proudly highlights, "Through our International Conferences, we have been able to get foreign speakers. In our last conference organised by the UNESCO/Cardinal Paul Poupard Foundation Chair for Inter-Religious and Inter-Cultural Dialogue, we had speakers from several continents share their views and concerns over the issue of water for sustainable development." She continues, "There were speakers from Rio, Congo, Russia, Paris and, of course, our very own country. The Guest of Honour was the President of the UNESCO Council of Intergovernmental Hydrological Program (IHP), Mr Fadi Comair." "We received the Best College Award (2015-2016) conferred by the University of Mumbai on 26th January 2018. The University of Mumbai has over 700 affiliated colleges. We received an 'A' Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council for two successive cycles," she further adds.
Following the Footsteps of St. Mother Teresa Since St. Mother Teresa laid the foundation stone of St. Andrew's College, it has been committed to reaching out to the poor and the socially disadvantaged. The college has a Social Outreach programme where all of the Second Year Degree College students work for 20 hours with various NGOs from different parts of the city to help various groups of people in need of help. They also have the NSS and DLLE doing remarkably good work. St. Andrew's College: A Pillar of Conscious Study of Liberal Arts Having set up the hub of Liberal Arts, Dr Fernandes is proud of the constant flow of students consciously choosing to study literature. She explains the intricacies of this course and how the college thrives for student success, she says, "Students who opt for Liberal Arts are at a great advantage. As a professor of English Literature, I make my students conscious of the fact that when they read literature, particularly the great classics, they get an insight into human nature which has not changed over the centuries. The colour of the skin might be different; dressing styles might be different, the century might be different, but human nature has not changed."
Ÿ To mould students to
be morally upright, socially committed, and spiritually inspired by Christian principles; to be responsible citizens of India and the world. Ÿ To enable students to
realise their full potential in academic, cultural, and sporting pursuits. Ÿ To foster a scientific
temper and encourage students to adopt a rational approach to solving problems. Ÿ To empower students
to be good leaders who will spread the light of knowledge, harmony, and equality in all spheres of life. Ÿ To equip students
with the required knowledge and skills to face the challenges of the real world.
"Stories that have stood the test of time are relevant even today because they transcend time and place. Those who study the humanities are at a great advantage because they can understand human nature better," she further adds. Inspiring a Generation The college has a philosophy of grooming students to become leaders and enjoy all different forms of arts. Advising them on their future, an eminent educator, Dr Fernandes says, "The young generation has to discover the joys of reading. My advice to them is to read as many books as they can, for knowledge is power. Dream impossible dreams and find ways of reaching there. Talk to people and listen to some of their suggestions. Dare to be different, take the road less travelled, and leave a trail for others to follow."
Envisioning the Future Even after spearheading the institution to an international stature, Dr Fernandes still strives for success and plans to take the institution further to holistically serve the community. Envisioning the future of the institution moving forward, she says, "The National Education Policy 2020 has some very encouraging features. An interdisciplinary approach to education will allow students of Commerce, Science, Technology and Medicine to study subjects that are in the Humanities – Literature, Philosophy, History and the rest. They could also opt for more practical courses in the Fine Arts and earn credits for doing Social Work and reaching out to Economically and Socially disadvantaged groups. Education should be student-centric and exams should test the students' creative, critical and analytical skills, not their memory."
