We sell computers that are right for you...
And...we are experts in repair!
Computer Concepts Offers Solutions to Your Technology Problems By Linda Landreth Phelps When you have an ailment, you typically look for doctor who is a specialist in the particular area of your need. The same applies when your computer is sluggish, wheezing, or even in need of major surgery. Will Melton hopes that when it comes to technology needs you will think of Computer Concepts for the cure. Will and his team not only feel they are uniquely qualified to completely and accurately diagnose your technology problems, but they will also offer sound solutions while establishing a personal relationship with you. Will wants his knowledgeable staff to become familiar faces you can trust. After all, he is living the life he always wanted when it comes to his work and he knows how important it is for people to have confidence in them. “I’d always been interested in computers and had tinkered around with them since I was a little kid. I started working at 14, as soon as I could get a permit. During that time I was primarily employed in the customer service area. My family and I moved here from North Carolina in 2000,” Will says. “After I graduated from Lafayette High School in 2003, I tried college, but found out I was anxious and ready to begin on the path I’d chosen. You might say I was eager to get a jump start on adult life.” When Will began his career he was initially focused on cellular technology, but soon started learning about hardware and software troubleshooting and network design and management. A year after he began working for a local computer repair company, he bought a 39 percent share of it. In July 2005, he partnered with other technology savvy businessmen and Computer Concepts was born. By August of 2006, they had expanded to their new retail space on Center Street in New Town. A large part of Will’s business activity is made up of commercial clients, but the average person with a laptop at the kitchen table isn’t forgotten. Every individual’s need is carefully assessed and met. The company’s ultimate goal is to teach and train the computer’s operator as well as solve problems as needed. From simple repairs to the most complex network system installation, Will’s team can do it all. In 2009 this personal attention and adept technical prowess led to readers of The Virginia Gazette to vote Computer Concepts their favorite computer repair service. “We offer three levels of service,” Will says. “You can come into the store to drop off your computer or just to look around, and we’ll help you try out the latest products right here on the floor. For repairs, one of our techs could come to your home or place of business. In some cases, we can actually access your computer over the Internet and fix it without ever seeing it.” What about just taking that sick computer to your techie neighbor for repair. Wouldn’t that be cheaper than dealing with a real company? According to Will, you could wind up spending less with Computer Concepts. “We have a staff that is proficient in various fields of expertise and we draw on each other for knowledge. The big box stores come to us when they get a problem they can’t solve,” Will says. “Sure, you could take your laptop to the little guy working out of his garage, but he’s just one person, who might not even be able to figure out what’s wrong, much less fix it. In that case, all he can tell you is that it’s time to buy another computer.” If your computer is running sluggishly, what’s needed may not be a new one with the latest operating system and software; maybe just a tweak of the old system would help squeeze another year of use out of it. “If you don’t need it, we won’t recommend it. We never oversell or undersell,” Will promises. “If we find that you really do need new equipment, we can offer a trade-in discount to make it a bit more affordable.” That reconditioned older model traded-in may be all a cost-conscious customer who only wants to check email needs. Decisions about what and when to buy are made differently today than they were even a few years ago because technology has changed so much. “We’ve come to think a little differently about computers and their life expectancy,” Will explains. “A high quality machine that is more expensive is expected to last for ten years, but it may not be the best solution for a business that relies on the most advanced, modern software. For instance, consider Windows 7. In less than a decade we’re on our fourth operating system, which now requires more current hardware to do an efficient job. New computers come preloaded with the latest and greatest, so you have to consider the cost of software upgrades when you’re making a decision about whether to replace your computer. Frankly, I’m advising people to spend less on their hardware and replace it more often. In the commercial world, you should expect to replace your equipment every 36 months or so.”
“From the first time I called them, I knew they were the computer shop for me."
Quick turnaround is another hallmark of Computer Concepts. Will understands that business people have needs when it comes to the use of their computers at work. Lost productivity means lost opportunity for income.
“There’s just something about Will and his staff. They are so accommodating, so personalized. And they really know their stuff . I recommend them to everybody!”
“We understand that getting it done quickly is essential since computer downtime is lost revenue for the customer,” Will says.

Your computer is geared to productivity and the more knowledgeable the input, the greater the output, so training is a big part of Computer Concept’s success story. “We offer professional training for Windows 7, Microsoft Office and other topics as another service to individuals and area businesses,” Will says. “We like to say that our business is not so much about computers as it is the people who use them. These days everyone has to watch the bottom line, and this training is crucial to the health and growth of any business. We’ve become our commercial clients’ advisors on how to utilize technology to cut costs.” Although Will’s technical proficiency is current, as the company expands, more of his time has been taken up with networking, building community partnerships, and envisioning the direction for future growth of the company. His latest concept is to offer service along the lines of boutique medical care. For a pre-set annual fee, Computer Concepts is available to the client at all times for any emergency care; additionally, they perform regular hands-on testing and maintenance procedures meant to keep the body…or, in this case, machines… operating at maximum efficiency. Clearing caches, defragmenting discs, scanning for malware and banishing viruses, all is included in the reasonable cost. The customer pays for the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your computer’s doctor is always on call.
“Of course, like any business, the ideal outcome is to make money,” Will says. “At the same time, that’s not our highest priority. I want every client to be satisfied and frustration-free. There are eight of us here at Computer Concepts, and we all know the main goal is to take care of the customer. If we do that right, we’ll be a success.”
