Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) began a system-wide program called Achieving the Dream: Data Walks that provides necessary support from Central Office Administration to maximize school effectiveness. The program is designed to periodically review district and school data beginning at the onset of the school year versus waiting until the end of year to make data driven modifications to curriculum, instruction and assessments. The Data Walks are held with principals, assistant principals, school leadership teams and various faculty and staff members who work to maintain alignment with the district mission and goals in an effort to attain their highest potential in all facets of the educational realm. The Achieving the Dream checklist consists of: District benchmark and SOL data, state mandated data, minutes from professional learning community meetings, vertical planning schedules, administrative observation notebooks, peer observation notebook, overage reports by grade levels, oversight committee schedules for special education (SPED) and writing portfolios, student/teacher monthly attendance reports, activity logs for support staff, parental contact logs, growth plans, teacher rankings in order of efficacy, academic intervention and remediation plans for students, listing of SPED caseloads and accommodations, documentation of inclusion practices, behavior intervention plans, teacher and course grade distribution information, on-time graduation reports and spreadsheets of diploma and credit status.

Aspiring Principal’s Executive Program (A-PEP)

The A-PEP program is an ambitious, proactive succession program designed to prepare 21st Century leaders from a practical perspective for the demands of school administration. The program is an in-house management training program for existing assistant principals or potential administrators. Participants will receive instruction addressing real-world examples and scenarios. Opportunities for experiential, individual and collaborative learning processes will be made available. After completion of the

Differentiated Instruction

Often schools begin an initiative only to see it peter out after several years. When planning a professional development initiative in “Differentiated Instruction,” Manassas Park City Schools was determined to create a framework that would build and sustain teachers’ professional knowledge and skills. The division is in its third year of implementing this K-12 initiative. After two years of workshops by Dr. Kay Brimijoin, an expert on “Differentiation,” our initial teacher cohort is becoming “Differentiation Coaches” under Dr. Brimijoin’s tutelage. Cohort one teachers are providing training and coaching support to Cohort two teachers, who are beginning to craft and implement differentiated lessons. What an exciting experience for both groups of teachers! Through “how to coach” sessions, Dr. Brimijoin is providing modeling and feedback of coaching conversations. Cohort one will videotape differentiated lessons to use for “coaching” practice and create a video library of instructional practices. This professional development framework has been enthusiastically received by teachers and administrators. Middlesex County Public Schools uses the FileMaker Pro database management application to maintain specifically and strategically tailored achievement and intervention plans for each of our students. Like many school districts, Middlesex houses assessment, attendance, and discipline data, but our use of FileMaker Pro is uniquely rich as we translate those data into a student profile allowing us to craft and document individualized remediation and enrichment, truancy prevention, and behavioral intervention plans. Based on benchmarks, SOL scores, and other variables, principals have the ability to “watchlist” a school’s most struggling learners, immediately identifying students who need additional support. Subsequently, teachers work collaboratively to build a specific intervention plan which may include after school remediation, strategic scheduling, mentorship, or other support measures. Moreover, for ease of tracking and monitoring, each student’s file may be accessed or amended by teachers and administrative staff ensuring that all of us have a complete picture of the student’s current progress and support. Panther 5 was created by teachers and presented by teachers to teachers. It Incorporated 5 rules all teachers enforce as well as create classroom management plans that contain routines and consistency from classroom to classroom in the school. This information was communicated to parents and students. Discipline data from the 2010-2011 school year was used by a teacher driven discipline committee to identify areas that need improvement, surprises, and positives. While many substitute applicants are licensed and have classroom experience, many applicants have no classroom experience or knowledge of classroom management techniques and teaching strategies. Recognizing that putting substitutes into the classroom without preparation might be a recipe for disaster, LCPS has instituted training for substitutes who do not hold a teaching license (current or expired). The “Growth Project” is a highly participatory process in which teachers and leaders are collaboratively designing systems to: 1) measure and report student growth in all grade-levels/content-areas; 2) align professional evaluation systems to ensure that student growth is the centerpiece of teacher and leader evaluations; and 3) research strategic compensation models. We are ahead of the curve in developing this type of approach and are serving as a model to others in the state. The Growth Project is an investment in capacity building that will that bring about demonstrated improvements in learning as we design and implement new approaches regarding student growth and professional growth.
