GREETINGS FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIR
Welcome to the
Conference. While you are here, I encourage you to: Network: I hope you’ve brought a lot of business cards. A CASE conference is the perfect place to meet professional kindred spirits. I’m still friends with and rely heavily on people I met at CASE conferences more than 20 years ago. The CASE network is strong, deep, friendly and knowledgeable. Meet as many people as you can and use them in your work.
Recharge: Sometimes we need a day or two away from the office just to think, listen, laugh and look at work with a fresh eye. Try to avoid your phone, enjoy those around you and head back home with a renewed enthusiasm for your work. Engage our Resources Partners: Our sponsors have knowledge, skills and products that make your work better. Many of them are graduates of our schools, and they faithfully attend our annual district conference. Many have become personal friends. Take advantage and discover how your institution can engage them. Learn: I am impressed by the depth of the educational sessions offered this year. Mike Hutchison and the conference programming team did a terrific job. We’ve added four new tracks, so I know you will leave Fort Worth having learned something new. Our keynote speakers will entertain, enlighten and inspire us. As we enjoy our time together, we are reminded that teaching and learning have been part of society since the beginning of humanity. Oral traditions have been passed down from generation to generation. Biblical lessons were told in parables. Plato and Socrates had their schools. The first university was founded in 1088. Educational organizations have survived depressions and recessions. Dictators and oppressive regimes. Natural and manmade disasters. Shifts in political leadership. Our schools have taught the men and women who have gone on to inspire us in the classroom, on the stage, in commerce, in the international arena of governments, in the fight against cancer, and in saving the treasures of our planet, including the treasure we call earth. Learning cannot be subdued. Education cannot be subdued. We are the champions of education. We are INVINCIBLE! Jeffery L. McLain Chair, 2013 CASE District IV Conference

The Influence of High Touch Event Communication on Donor Support Texas Ballroom C
One of the most-asked questions Jim Hooker receives while presenting is, “How do I convince my president or development officer that events are worth the cost?” As an event specialist, Hooker has spent more than 15 years proving that as message delivery systems, events — when done properly — are indeed worth the cost. Using USC as a case study, he interviewed donors, deans, advancement officers, and a university president. He scrutinized patterns of giving behavior and examined the willingness of an institution to use events as an integral part of its marketing outreach. He then assessed the influences of an event on shaping a donor’s willingness to make a substantial and possibly transformational gift to an institution. The results may surprise you.

PRESENTATION OF THE 6:45 a.m. E. JOSEPH SAVOIE LEADERSHIP AWARD EARLY MORNING 5K RUN/WALK Meet in hotel lobby Dr. Steven G. Gamble President, Eastern New Mexico University
Dr. Steven Gamble arrived at Eastern New Mexico University in August 2001, moving from the presidency of Southern Arkansas University (1992-2001) and having served previously as vice president for academic affairs (19871992) at West Texas A&M University. Throughout his career in higher education, including bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in history from Texas Tech University, he has been significantly involved in institutional advancement and community outreach, and active in representing higher education in a positive light to the community. But in small, rural Portales, New Mexico, he found a perfect venue for his talents. The first decade of the 21st century was characterized by dramatic changes in technology, social media, and the demographics of college-bound students and, beginning in 2007, a dramatic economic downturn. Like many states, New Mexico was forced to reduce appropriations to higher education and forgo compensation increases to state employees. Eastern New Mexico University sustained four years of cuts (2008-2011) in state appropriations at the same time that charitable giving was also negatively impacted by economic uncertainties. Despite these challenges, Eastern New Mexico University has enjoyed a decade of unprecedented growth and success. And it is due largely to Gamble’s energy, charisma, and hard work. Since 2001, under Dr. Gamble’s leadership, Eastern New Mexico University has grown as a campus and as a presence in New Mexico and the region. He has created a campus culture where students know the president, where faculty are not surprised to see him lean into their office doorway to say hello, and where staff are pleased but not surprised when the president knows their names and asks them about their jobs or families. His candor, integrity, and the transparency he brings to university practices and goals have struck a chord with the campus community and with local, state, and regional stakeholders. He has represented the best of higher education’s ability to collaborate with community and educational partners to build a stronger community and university. In an era when public support for higher education is waning badly, public support for Eastern New Mexico University, thanks to Gamble’s leadership, has never been stronger. The students, faculty, and staff of Eastern New Mexico University take great pride in the recognition of their president, Dr. Steven Gamble, with the 2013 Dr. Joseph E. Savoie Chief Executive Leadership Award.

Panel Discussion: Social Media for Media Relations
New Realities in Capital Campaigns
For communication professionals, it’s no secret that social media has changed the way we share information, consume news, engage with our audiences, and build relationships with people we may never actually meet. As we “Pin,”“Like,”“Tweet,” and “Share” our way throughout the day, we need to understand how changing communication habits affect our work with members of the media. In this panel discussion, attendees will hear from Fort Worth area reporters on how social media has changed the way they find news and how social media can help or hinder their efforts.
Chances are your organization is devising capital campaigns based on methodologies almost a century old. Many classic principles remain relevant, but episodic approaches to fundraising are becoming less effective. The economic climate, shifting demographics, and increased competition are forcing organizations to rethink their traditional fundraising practices. This session will cover how successful capital campaigns are now part of a more comprehensive approach to development, which requires a thorough understanding of the latest methodologies and technologies for creating integrated fundraising strategies. We will also cover how to get through a stalled or challenged campaign.

University corporate relations offices are responsible for generating results by establishing linkages with companies and then expanding in order to benefit both sides and provide private revenues back to the university. Because few corporate relations offices have all of the resources they need, a common challenge is making sure efforts are focused on areas that align with the priorities and goals of the senior administration and also those that will produce the greatest ROI. Through examining the complexities of the vice president’s role, a panel of experienced advancement professionals will explore the question of which competencies are most critical for success in this leadership position. WEB
Why the Web Matters (More Than You Think) Texas Ballroom G
College websites have become ubiquitous, and while there has been marginal improvement over the last decade, most .edu websites are still mediocre at best. Unfortunately, too many campuses take their websites for granted; there is great risk in not providing the proper time, attention, resources, and management to the Web. As the Web continues to grow in importance, this will become an even bigger issue. As more services and instruction move online, the Web will become the digital manifestation of your institution. This thought-provoking presentation will make a compelling case about why your website should be thought of as your most important strategic asset. Remodeling Your Home: Arriving at a Better Information Architecture Texas Ballroom G
Information architecture (IA) is how we organize and label content on large websites. In an ideal world, doing IA is a lot like designing a custom kitchen for a new home. But let’s face it, in higher education our “house” is hundreds of years old, the appliances don't match, and nobody can agree on which drawer we should put the silverware. While good IA is that “open-concept” layout we've all been dreaming of, we can’t always knock down every load-bearing structure that lies in the way. This presentation will help you communicate the importance of information architecture in helping everyone find what they are looking for — quickly and easily. We’ll cover basic principles, look at best practices, and talk about iterative design. We’ll also go over how Web governance helps you mitigate political battles over homepage links and discuss strategies for measuring the success of your new IA. ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING CASE IV ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING
Message from the Chair Welcome to the 2013 CASE District IV Annual Conference and business meeting. Your conference committee has worked incredibly hard for over a year to assemble an extraordinary program and provide opportunities for you to network and grow professionally. The tremendous response to this conference demonstrates the great need folks in our region have for professional development opportunities and that hopefully we are on the right track in meeting those needs. CASE District IV is a totally volunteer-driven enterprise. When you review the list of Board members and Conference committee members, you will see that your volunteer leadership represents every corner of the district and every discipline within advancement. What may not be quite as evident is the number of hours they devote in support of District IV and our effort to advance our profession in the Southwest. The District IV Board has developed a set of strategic priorities to guide the work we plan over the next few years. Here’s a summary of the five general directions we have identified: 1.
Seek opportunities to provide members with program opportunities outside of the annual conference
2.
Further incorporate technology to enhance service to members
3.
Ensure diversified growth of the profession and exposure to the CASE brand
4.
Maintain policies that ensure financial stability
5.
Build upon the success of the annual conference
We carry out this work as part of a tremendously strong international CASE organization and are working to integrate even better the programs we offer and the opportunities made possible by CASE International, led by President John Lippincott. While each CASE district has its own regional flavor, the one constant is the excellence that CASE has represented for decades. I ask that you consider doing four things to support our efforts in District IV: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Take advantage of everything this conference has to offer, whether you are a veteran of professional conferences or a first-time CASE participant. The program, in particular, is broader than ever before and has something for everyone. Give us feedback about how we are doing. Don’t just fill out the program feedback questionnaire; visit with Board members or Conference committee members about what you liked and suggest ideas for improvement. I’ve even included my email address below if you have comments you’d like to share directly with me – either about the conference or anything else related to CASE IV. Get involved. Let someone know you’d like to be involved. There are lots of ways to help advance CASE IV, and we need as many volunteers as possible to carry out our myriad of programs. Most of the individuals who serve on the District Board started out in “entry level” volunteer positions. If you like what you see, please encourage others to join you in participating in CASE IV programs. We want to include as many people under the proverbial tent as possible.
Thanks again for your participation in this conference and in CASE District IV and for your contributions to advancing education in our region. Best regards,
Jim Lewis

Clarification of the Status of CASE Membership in Mexico BACKGROUND Since its founding in 1974, CASE has included members from Mexico within its North American district structure as part of Southwest District IV. While this approach made good sense at the time and was well-intentioned, it resulted in occasional engagement of Mexican colleagues in district activities due to language, cultural and geographic barriers. For a number of years, the leadership of District IV has sought guidance and assistance from CASE headquarters in overcoming those barriers and increasing service to and involvement of Mexican members. Similarly, the Mexico Advisory Group, made up of volunteers within Mexico, indicated the growing need for CASE services delivered locally and in Spanish.
Trustees passed a resolution encouraging District IV to amend its bylaws to remove references to Mexico. The CALAG also enthusiastically endorsed this resolution. This change is simply intended to clarify Mexico’s status within CASE. It is not intended to discourage cross-border engagement. On the contrary, the hope is that new opportunities will arise for members from Mexico and throughout Latin America to be involved with Districts III, IV, VII, and others.
In 2009, CASE undertook a two-year pilot program to determine the viability of a formal presence in Latin America. Based on the positive results of that effort, the CASE Board of Trustees voted in 2011 to establish CASE América Latina. The region is now served by two staff members and is represented by the CASE América Latina Advisory Group (CALAG).
NEXT STEPS In response to the recommendation from the CASE Board of Trustees, the District IV Board of Directors passed the following motion on November 6, 2012, “CASE District IV congratulates and endorses Mexico’s alignment with the new CASE América Latina regional operation. CASE District IV should adjust its bylaws and governing documents accordingly.”
PROPOSED CHANGE TO DISTRICT IV BYLAWS
The amended bylaws are presented to the District IV membership for consideration. District IV members will be asked to approve these amended bylaws during the 2013 Annual Business Meeting on Tuesday, March 26 in Fort Worth, Texas.
With the formal establishment of CASE América Latina, CASE members in Mexico now have access to a growing array of programs and services specifically designed to meet their professional development needs. As a result, continuing to include Mexico within District IV seems confusing and redundant. Therefore, at their July 2012 meeting the CASE Board of
