Say cheese
WITH 545,000 tonnes of cheese being devoured in the UK every year, it would seem fair to say the nation loves the stuff. Between grating Cheddar onto the top of lasagne, slapping chunks between slices of bread and nibbling Stilton and Brie with wine and grapes, the average person consumes 10.7kgs every 12 months. But while shoppers were once happy to stick with traditional varieties, now they are looking for something different. As a result, supermarkets across the country are stocking speciality cheeses including Leicester with green olives, white Stilton with lemon preserve and Edam with red chillies. Even mint chocolate chip-flavoured cheese made an appearance a couple of months ago.
Now the big cheese in town is cappuccino. But will it go down well with the public? Tutors, students and visitors to Craigend Resource Centre in Greenock gave the Tele a very mixed response when it decided to find out. One woman spat it out and reached for a lollipop to counter the taste, while a retired volunteer eagerly lopped off a second chunk and declared he would be adding the cheese to his grocery list. Sceptical Andrea Jenkins was unconvinced about the novelty cheese and even less impressed after sampling the delicacy during a break from teaching her sewing class at Craigend. Andrea said: 'That is disgusting. It is like ice cream. It is definitely coffee- flavoured and it is like a dessert, but it definitely doesn"t taste like cheese.' Having spent Christmas in Thailand, Andrea is no stranger to bizarre treats. She said: 'The most unusual food I have ever seen is crickets. They eat them like snacks in Thailand but I didn"t try them.' Alison Duffy, 25, mum to Kieran, 17 months, lives in Kilcreggan View, Greenock, and attends Andrea"s sewing classes. She loves chocolate and fajitas but was not keen on the coffee- flavoured cheese. She said: 'It tastes like fudge and I don"t like it. I don"t think it will be popular.' However, Tommy McCallion, a volunteer at Craigend, was an immediate fan. He said: 'It is beautiful, excellent, a lovely flavour. I have cheese nearly every day and I like most cheeses, especially cheddar.
'I will be buying some of this. It is the kind of thing I would eat in the evening on crackers. I think there will be a lot of interest.' Tommy, who lives in Belville Street, Greenock, says the strangest food he has ever eaten - apart from cappuccino cheese - was anchovies. Dad of two Brian Power, 45, who lives in Port Glasgow and works as a project coordinator, said: 'It was nice but I don"t think I will have it again, even although I liked it. 'I am not a coffee drinker and I wouldn"t want it more than occasionally. I stick to what I know and I like things like cauliflower cheese sauce.' However, Barry Rogers, 32, of Greenock, currently studying computing at Craigend, was more enthusiastic. He said: 'It is lovely. I would buy it if I could afford it, but I think, because it is really unusual, it will probably be about a tenner.' Barry was surprised to hear a decent sized wedge would cost less than £2. He then revealed: 'I once had an ostrich burger in the St Enoch Centre in Glasgow. They were selling them at a stall and had boar and alligator burgers. The ostrich was weird and a bit rubbery, but I liked it.' Lindsey Rice, 33, who lives in Greenock, was tempted to sample the cheese while visiting Craigend to use the internet. She said: 'It is unusual. I quite like mild cheese. This one is nice. I would most probably have it again. Last year I tried an apple one. I wasn"t too sure at first but it was lovely.' Child care worker Carol Street said: 'The creamy texture is nice and you can tell it is coffee-flavoured. I like the taste and I love all cheeses. There is a Mexican one which is spicy and hot and I like that.' Carol, 41, who lives in Gourock, says lasagne is her favourite meal and tripe is the most unusual thing she has ever had. She said: 'When I was in Tesco once I saw they had ostrich burgers, but I didn"t fancy that.' Noreen Green, 38, who tutors computing, is up for trying anything new and once had tiny snails while on holiday in Spain.

She described them as being "like prawns" but, despite her willingness to try unusual food, she was not impressed with the cheese, dismissing it as "minging". Reaching for a lollipop to remove the taste, she said: 'It is pretty horrible. I like cheese but not ones like gorgonzola. I like coffee-flavoured cheesecake, but I don"t like that cheese.' Even though Jean Dobbin, 67, from Greenock, admitted she did not like cappuccinos, she couldn"t resist trying the coffee cheese. With her curiosity satisfied, she said: 'I don"t think I would have it again. I like traditional stuff, but I will try anything. I was in India on holiday six years ago visiting friends and I tried some really hot, hot curries you couldn"t eat.' Cappuccino cheese is a limited edition created to look like a cappuccino coffee.
