While reading the book, I Like Bugs, with Krash one night an idea hit me.
He really enjoyed the book and asked me to read it several times. My days of teaching Kindergarten flooded back to me and the image of a pocket chart popped into my head.
So what did I do? I said goodnight and jumped on the computer to create my first set of Pocket Chart Printables! I can’t sleep when an idea hits me and I wanted to act on his love for the book and have it ready for him the next day!
What did we do with the pocket chart printables? We read the book and then laid the strips all around the floor…
We went back and read the book one page at a time and Krash found the matching strip for the pocket chart and put it up…
After they were all up, we read the story in the pocket chart together!
Several times {pencil pointer is from Target $1 section}!
These were very easy to make and he enjoyed the activity a lot. I decided to go ahead and make a couple more sets for other easy readers…
Old, New, Red, Blue is actually a favorite book for Ladybug-to the point that she can almost “read” the entire book herself. I plan to use this set with her!
I made a set for the book, The Frog and the Fly to go along with our upcoming pond theme!
If you have any easy readers you’d like me to look into making sets for, let me know! I forgot how much I loved a pocket chart and we have really been putting ours to good use lately {you can see it in recent Tot School photos}. They do have pocket charts in the $1 section at Target right now, I am not certain of the size. If you have a Target definitely check it out. You could always buy 2 if they aren’t big enough and hang them side by side! You can download these sets and any others I create here on my website for FREE!

Back when I taught Kindergarten we always had a writing center and a part of that center was the “Read & Write the Room” activity. I did this with PacMan when he was in Kindergarten and it is now time to begin with Krash! I am working on adding printable sets to go with our different themes, some will be included in new Preschool Packs, others will be grouped in with the Tot School Printables themes since I often base our whole theme for school around Ladybug’s current theme. The idea is simple and one that can be expanded on in many creative ways-this is just one way to do it. Print the image/word cards and cut apart. Tape these around the schoolroom or school area in your home. Give your child a clipboard, and a pencil and have him/her go around and find the words and record them on either the tracing sheet (younger kids) or on the blank lines (older kids). For fun, allow your child to use funny glasses, a fun word pointer, and a special pen or pencil! You could even slip the recording sheet into the Crayola Dry Erase Center and have your child use that to write on with a dry erase marker! This past week Krash had his first experience. I made cards to go along with Ladybug’s theme: nature. I hung the 10 cards all over the school room…

I gave Krash a clipboard and his recording sheet and sent him on the hunt.
Tot School
The goal of Read and Write the Room is to reinforce print awareness. It is not for spelling practice {although it could be for older children}. It is a way to connect pictures with words and practice handwriting in a fun way.

You could expand on this idea to hang up sight words and have your child hunt for them, use just letters or any theme. There are MANY possibilities to this idea!! You can find word cards to download for free in the Tot School Printables units starting with letter Jj. You can also see the new Read & Write the Room webpage here for even more free printables!

I am so excited to share add-ons I have created for the You Can Read program! I must admit I am actually surprised with how well Krash is doing with this program. I knew it would be good exposure for him but had no idea he would move so quickly and love it so much! Below you will see all of the EXTRAS that are only available in the You Can Read Bundle. Anything new added down the road will also be available to those of you who have purchased. I found a box font I love and created these handwriting printables for all of the words in the You Can Read program.
Unit Review BINGO, I created a BINGO game for every 4 units. Words will be included from the most recent 4 units and also extra words from the units prior to those.
Assessment Tools! I created reading and writing assessment tools for the entire word list. I also include instruction sheets on how to administer the assessments.
Sight Word Sensory Bin Search These were created after being inspired by Stephanie from Shining Our Lights Preschool. You can see how I will be using these on her blog here!
Word Caterpillar ~ a simple way to grow your sight word collection and practice words that have already been learned!
Stamp a Word ~ each word has a simple box set up to use with letter stamps.
Sight Word Graphing ~ many of our Preschool Packs have the graphing activity and it is a favorite so I created sets for each You Can Read Unit and a blank cube if you want to write your own words! See ideas for using Roll and Graph printables here!
You can see ALL You Can Read Units in action on my blog in this Kindergarten with Krash At a Glance post, where I have all of our posts listed out and linked up! See info about purchasing the You Can Read Bundle ! FREE You Can Read Printables are here!

I have a new PowerPoint show available in the Members Only section, featuring words from Bob Books.
Krash has been enjoying the Bob Books, which are a great partner to the You Can Read program. The Bob Books pull in phonics, while the You Can Read works on high frequency words and recognizing by sight. We use this show to work on sounds and blending, he enjoys that the words are directly from his Bob Books. You will see I color coded the slides by book and put a little teacher note in the bottom right corner so you know when to stop the show {not going beyond books your child has read. I also want to mention a wonderful blog which is entirely focused on teaching reading using Bob Books, she actually helped me behind the scenes a bit. There is a link to her blog on the first slide also. This show features words from the first set of Bob Books, 1-7. Books 8-12 will be in another show coming soon! You can access this show in the Members Only section of my website. If you are not a member already, you can learn more info here. See what is in the Members Only section now and what is coming soon here!

Learning to read doesn’t always involve a book or a piece of paper! There are many, many fun ways to incorporate word work into your little one’s school time. This post will be an ongoing collection of many word play ideas, many of which I used while using my You Can Read program! In no particular order, here are many hands on ideas for word play fun! Some are new ideas, some are ideas I used when I taught public school Kindergarten. Some are my ideas, some are ideas that have been passed down by teachers through the years! Make words with small objects! Favorites are jewels {we have gotten ours at Dollar Tree and various craft stores}, and Learning Links. The possibilities are endless with this!
Take the idea a step further and challenge your child to find toys to make words out of! Here we used Twisters/Twister Curves…
Stamp words! He was actually stamping Batman this day, but we also use them to stamp our sight words! {we just ordered these cool stamps, they aren’t here yet though!}
Which Word is Right? Mom ~ write 3 spellings of the sight word, only 1 correct. Have your child erase the wrong words, leave the correct spelling! Throw in a little healthy fruit snack as a treat for getting the answer correct!
Dry Erase Writing…Simply have your child write the word you call out on a dry erase board. Allow him/her to look at the word wall if needed to keep things positive!
Word Wall Search…Use a toy {Krash uses his favorite dolphin to jump} find the word you {or a helpful sibling} call out on the word wall!
Make the word with large foam letters from a floor puzzle {we got ours for $10 at Ross a few years back}. Krash is also using his dolphin to flip the ball down the word as he calls out the letters to spell and say the word!
Use small letter tiles {or abc magnets} to make words and a fun pointer to have your child point to the words you call out. Before starting this, you could also work with your child on putting the ABCs in order!
Roll & Read…Use an cube and an Education Cubes insert, having your child roll and read!
See how active this idea can really get!!!
Water paint the words outside on a warm day! Add in a cube for even more active play. Krash rolled the cube, ran to get it, ran back and painted the word!
Use the Leap Frog Word Whammer to spell phonetic 3 letter words. I thought it was hilarious that the whammer asked K to spell pub!
Lay out the words your child knows {ours are cut and laminated from our color by # cards}.
Have your child roll the cube {or you can just yell out a word}, and toss a fun object/ball onto the correct word!
Make words out of play dough {I recommend this recipe}…
Do you have an idea for word play fun? Feel free to link up any idea that involves learning words in a fun, hands-on way! This is not going to be a weekly linky, just a large gathering of ideas in one place. You can come back and link up new ideas when you write posts about them! I will link to this Word Play post in each of my Kindergarten with Krash posts. Please Note ~ Links that do not share a family friendly reading idea will be removed in order to help others searching specifically for word play ideas!
