March 3 Cloteene D. Augspurger Cloteene Douglas Augspurger, 84, of Orlando, Florida, died Friday, February 26, 2010, in Orlando. She was a native of Ashley County, a resident of Orlando since 1999 and a longtime resident of Montrose, where she met her future husband of 64 years, Willard Horton Augspurger. They moved to Monroe, Louisiana, where she worked for Sears for over twenty years. She became a buyer for children's clothing and later opened her own clothing store, Cloteene's Children's Castle. She also worked for Parker Jewelers. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe and sang in the choir for many years. She moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, after retirement and became a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. She loved music and loved to travel. She spent 17 of her last 20 years as primary caregiver for her husband. She is survived by her son, Willard Douglas Augspurger and wife Lou Anne Causey Augspurger of Orlando; a brother, James Turner Douglas and his wife Evelyn of Conway; three grandchildren, Erin Ashley Augspurger, Justin Alden Augspurger and Benjamin Aaron Augspurger; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2007; her parents, Thad Dyer Douglas and Julia Stone Douglas; and siblings Lillian Douglas Lee, William Jackson Douglas, and Virginia Douglas Teague. Funeral services are at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 4, in the First Baptist Church of Hamburg with Dr. Bobby Pennington officiating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery. Patricia Huff Burnett Patricia Elaine Huff Burnett, 78, of Crossett died Sunday, February 21, 2010, after a battle of cancer. Born on October 31, 1931, in Crossett to Glee Ebert and Hazel Zastrow Huff, she was a retired registered nurse who was employed with Ashley County Medical Center for many years. Survivors include three children, Glee Allan Underwood Burt and wife Elizabeth of Jacksonville, Stacia Jones and husband Donald of Fort Collins, CO, and Holly Faulkner of Vilonia; one brother, Teddy Huff and wife Mollie; one sister, Mary Burt and husband Skip, all of Crossett; sisters-in-law, Claudine Huff of Fountain Hill, Roseann Huff of San Diego, CA, and Sara Huff of Bartlett, TN; eight grandchildren, Thomas Burt, Jennifer McLean, Amanda Baker, Jeremiah Jones, Chalace Jones, Shawn Chester, Ceann Bowerman and Moriah Harris; and sixteen great-grandchildren. Eugene Crawford Eugene Crawford, 71, of El Dorado died Friday, February 19, 2010, at the Ashley County Medical Center in Crossett. Born on April 16, 1938, Mr. Crawford was a resident of El Dorado for 60 years. He worked in the oil fields for over 50 years before he retired. A native of Peru, Indiana, a resident of Crossett for the past three years and a former resident of Crown Point, Indiana, she was a retired beautician and school bus driver. He was born May 4, 1931, to John Franklin and Allie Simmons Little in Strong. He was an employee of Georgia-Pacific for 47 years and retired as an electrical and instrumentation technician on April 1, 1999. He was an active member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church for 52 years and held the position of Sunday School Director. He was on the board of North Crossett Utilities and was board chairman for many years. He was one of nine men who pooled their money and resources to form what is known today as the Crossett Paper Mill Employees Federal Credit Union and was a charter member of First State Bank. In his early adulthood he enjoyed riding, raising and trading horses and buying and selling cattle. John and his wife also bought and farmed land in several counties. For the last 30 years or so his passion was searching for oil. A veteran of the Korean War, he was one of the youngest soldiers to rise to the rank of master sergeant. He received a Bronze Star, conduct medals, and other awards for leadership abilities. He was one of the many who fought in the infamous Battle of Pork Chop Hill. He was married to Dorothy Ann Seymore on May 4, 1951, and survived by his wife; one son, Rusty Little and wife Denise of Crossett; two daughters, Kristi Brown and husband Brent of Crossett and Sharry Guin and husband Mike of Chattanooga, TN; three grandsons; John and Richard Guin of Chattanooga and Benji Brown of Crossett; one great-granddaughter, Keely Williams of Grove Hill, AL; one sister, Olga Taylor of Crossett; and two brothers; Donald Little and wife Gelynn and Glen Little and wife Peggy of Huttig. James Riley and Doris Oden Bolin, an U.S. Navy veteran and an ordained minister and bishop of the Louisiana Pentecostal Church of God. Rev. Bolin pastored churches in Louisiana and Arkansas and most recently was pastor at the Live Oak Pentecostal Church of God in Watson, LA, for 18 years. Born Oct. 31, 1916, in Milo, he was a lifelong resident of Crossett. He owned and operated the North Crossett. Esso Service Station, had been a caterpillar operator for the Arkansas Forestry Service and was employed by Scott LP Gas Co. He finished his years of work employed at Georgia Pacific where he moved from an hourly employee to superintendent of maintenance in the plywood division, retiring in 1979. In retirement he raised a garden and did woodworking in his shop. He loved to fish. He served as vice president of the Carpenters and Joiners Union, as a board member of the Crossett Health Center and in an advisory capacity to the Forest Echoes Vocational Technical School for several years. He was a member of the Plywood Credit Union board of directors and was instrumental in the merger of the Plywood Credit Union into the Crossett Papermill Credit Union. He faithfully served his church, Cloverdale Assembly of God, for many years where he was a charter member, deacon, and Sunday School teacher. Marshall Elton Brantley Marshall Elton Brantley, 70, of Washtucna, WA, formerly of Crossett, died February 18, 2010, in Jacksonville, FL, as a result of several health complications. Born September 15, 1939, in Crossett to Leon & Aileen Robinson Brantley, at the age of 15 he joined the U.S. Navy and was trained as a cook on an aircraft carrier and while in the Navy, was an extra in the movie, Don't Give Up the Ship, starring Jerry Lewis. Mr. Brantley was a veteran of the Vietnam War and retired from the U. S. Navy after 20 years of service. He then operated a saw mill and built houses in Washington. Mr. Brantley was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed living close to his favorite sturgeon fishing hole on the Snake River. Survivors are his fiancée, Lee "Red" O'Keeffe of Washtucna; three daughters, Angela Swartz of Arizona, Holly Brantley of California and Joy Brantley of Arizona; eight grandchildren, Lindsey Swartz, Ty Lackey, Johnny Lackey, Kathryn Swartz, Micah Brantley, Joseph Rowsell, Tracey Swartz and Keri Kemp; one great-grandson, John Lackey; one sister, Margie G. Brantley, Jr. Among his many medical problems, he suffered from dementia with Lewy Bodies which is the second most common form of dementia. This disease is so devastating to the patient and their families, and very little is known about the causes of this disease. For this reason, he donated his brain to The Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, for research and had been a patient at the clinic for 5 weeks prior to his death. The family requests memorials to the Mayo Clinic for the Research of Alzheimer's Disease. Elvie Clark Elvie Clark, 95, of Crossett died Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Ashley County Medical Center. Born on November 27, 1914, to Walter and Anna Lou Beal McDougald, Mrs. Clark was a homemaker and member of the Ashley County Home Demonstration Club. She was the first student in the Crossett school system that was allowed to be married and completed her last two years of education in one year working as a secretary for Mr. Hastings to help pay for her tuition. Mrs. Clark was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church and taught the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class for many years. Survivors include one son, Kenneth Clark of Crossett; three daughters, Joyce Holden of Ft. Smith, Janis Carter and husband James Allen and Jo Allyn Culp and husband Royce, all of Crossett; one brother, Lester McDougald of Sulphur, LA; one sister, Gladys "Pat" Creed of Ft. Lois Allison Ford Lois Allison Ford, 97, of Hamburg died Friday, March 5, 2010, at her granddaughter's residence in Weatherford, Texas. A native of Ashley County, a resident of Hamburg since 1978 and a former resident of Smackover, she was a homemaker and worked for Rose & Shamrock Drug Stores in Smackover. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hamburg. She is survived by a son, Ron Ford and wife Bobbie of San Antonio, Texas; a granddaughter and caregiver, Cindy Kennedy and husband Randy of Weatherford; a brother, Bobby Allison and wife Norma of Fountain Hill; a sister, Olive McNeice of McComb, Mississippi; seven other grandchildren, Ronnie, David, Tommy, Jayme, Jeffrey and Jaclyn Ford and Dana Hickok; numerous great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. "Zip" Harper Robert Davis "Zip" Harper, 87, of Crossett died Wednesday, March 3, 2010. Born on April 26, 1922, in White to Zemory Z. and Chloe Davis Harper, he graduated from Crossett High School in 1940 and left Ashley County to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He attended MIT as an aviation instrument mechanic, serving during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1944 as a chief petty officer. He returned to Crossett and married Christine Locke on December 25, 1945. After a brief time working in Arizona, the Harpers returned to Crossett in 1949 where Mr. Harper began working for the Bank of Crossett as a teller. He worked in all areas of the bank, was active in the Arkansas Bankers Association, was a graduate of the L.S.U. School of Banking, and retired as vice president of First National Bank of Crossett in 1980. He returned to work at First State Bank of Crossett until 1982. During his career in Crossett, he was active in numerous community and civic organizations and events, and was instrumental in the early formation of South Arkansas industrial and economic development organizations. He was active in and was a past president and served as secretary/treasurer for more than 20 years of the Crossett Riding Club. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed riding horses, hunting, fishing and operating his tractor. Scott. She was a faithful member of the Seven Star Baptist Church where she served as program chairperson, president of the Pastor's Auxiliary Club and assistant secretary/treasurer. A graduate of Arkansas Baptist College, she received a reading certification and MSE from Ouachita Baptist University. She did further studies at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Henderson State, Arkansas State, Rhodes College, Louisiana State University, Delta State, Kentucky State, Missouri State College and the University of Arkansas-Monticello. She was a member of the Delta Teachers Academy, the National Faculty, Eudora Education Association, Nation Reading Council and Retired Teacher Association. James Gilbert James Gilbert, 70, of Monroe, LA, formerly of Crossett, died Saturday, March 21, 2010, at the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Monroe. He was born August 9, 1939, on the banks of Bear Lake to Jean H. and Lucille Deckard Gilbert. After graduating from West Monroe High School in 1957, James joined the United States Army and served in Korea and Okinawa and had the privilege of marching in President John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Parade. He was part of the 82nd Airborne Group prepared to parachute into Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, but spent most of his time in B Co, 2503rd as part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He served in the military from 1960-1963. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, James was a member of Riverview Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school, RAs, and led the singing. While working part time and attending Northeast Louisiana University, he met Lyndae Ann Johnson, and they were married July 17, 1964. They transferred to Louisiana Tech University, and in 1967, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in forestry. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. He was hired by Georgia-Pacific in Crossett as an assistant forester in the Crossett District and also served as district forester for the Berlin District. He was promoted to area forester at Beekman, LA, and then to Crossett area forester, where he remained until his retirement in 2001. While a forester in Louisiana, he served on the board of directors for the Louisiana Forestry Association. He was known for raising Catahoula dogs used in hunting wild hogs and was an avid horseman. He served as choir director for North Crossett First Baptist Church and later Temple Baptist Church. He served as deacon for Temple Baptist and First Baptist Church of Crossett. He participated in two mission trips to Brazil, two to Mexico and one to South Texas.
