BOOK REVIEW
I
t has been almost 16 years since Johnson wrote this book. Unlike many books on science and technology, this one, like fine wine, is best tasted after years of maturation. When this book was published in 2004, Facebook was not yet created. Twitter was not created until 2006. Airbnb arrived in 2008, and WhatsApp in 2009. Now we are seeing the influence of Uber taxis and how they are driving conventional taxi companies to near panic. What do these companies have in common? They are all superstructures that are not driven top-down but bottom-up, seemingly headless and leaderless but they grow rapidly and silently. Johnson begins with the story of the slime mould. A slime mould appears like a ‘lowlife’ entity not dissimilar to an amoeba. Yet when scientists placed food at two of four exits of a maze, the slime mould was able to find the shortest route to the food. Individually, they are distinct single cell units that move separately from the others, but when conditions are right, they coalesce and move as a single whole. His next story is about ant colonies. Unlike the animated film Antz, ant colonies are not ruled or directed by a leader top-down. It is true they have a queen – but she does not rule. Her job is to lay eggs. The colony has ants with differentiated functions, but they work together such that they appear to have a solitary brain directing them.

Steven Johnson 2002 Penguin Books Call No.
Next, the author comments on the subject of the human brain. He reminds us that the human brain has millions of neurons. None of them has any influence or impact by itself. But by connecting with other neurons, together they transform the human brain into an incomparable thought machine. When we examine the neurons at work, it is like watching the ants and the slime mould. We marvel at the swarm behaviour that, to us, seems to act as a whole with a single brain. Moving onto an even larger subject, Johnson sees urban cities developing in the same way. He shows us that cities are not developed at one go. A city develops gradually, house by house, street by street, silently, and when the conditions are right (which may include the aid of some urban planning) a giant community emerges before our eyes. Johnson believes that the secret behind units growing into a whole or moving as a swarm lies in communication among the swarm’s individual units, whether the swarm is that of an ant colony or the dwellers in a city. He cites Jane Jacobs extensively in support. In her book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jacobs writes: “Vital cities have marvellous innate abilities for understanding, communicating, contriving and inventing what is required to combat their difficulties.” But they “get their order from below”, as Johnson observed.
What if scientists and engineers were to learn from the social and innate behaviour in biological entities? People like Oliver Selfridge have used that knowledge to develop the computer brain in the same manner. Rather than build a single smart programme, Selfridge created a swarm of limited ‘miniprogrammes’. And eventually, to teach a machine to recognise letters, we simply keep adding more and more layers of ‘miniprogrammes’. There is, of course, more to this. Johnson explains that basically, such programmes work because they get innumerable ‘feedback’ so that the ‘brain’ (machine) learns to differentiate and associate. The machine and organisms utilising the feedback mechanism avoid burnout by having an inbuilt ‘fatigue factor’. A brain that does not stop reverberating, Johnson points out, is described as being in a state of an ‘epileptic fit’. The individual units, Johnson observed, must act within rules. Johnson says that such rules are not unlike rules in games (such as Monopoly). He says, “Rules give games their structure, and without that structure, there’s no game: every move is a checkmate, and every toss of the dice lands you on Park Place.” That brings us to the present day. We can see some possible answers to some of the questions Johnson posed 16 years ago. “Will computers become self-aware?” “Will new
political movements or systems explicitly model themselves after the distributed intelligence of the ant colony or the city neighbourhood?” For those who did not read the book in 2002, now is a good (maybe an even better) time to read it.

Swimming in the Sink: An Episode of the Heart Author: D. Lynne Cox Publisher: New York: Vintage Books, 2016 Call No.: Adult Lending English 797.21092 COX - [REC]
The book’s title Swimming in the Sink aptly sums up the ups and downs the author experienced after a series of personal tragedies. Considered one of the world’s most accomplished open-water swimmers, Lynne Cox went from conquering treacherous waters in the English Channel, the Bering Strait, and the coast of Antarctica to splashing herself in her kitchen sink, ironically, in an attempt to get back into swimming. Cox’s memoir offers readers a glimpse into her extraordinary life as an elite athlete who not only braved through frigid waters but also put her body through extreme pain for scientific research willingly. However, what makes her story both compelling and inspiring is her honesty and humility in recounting the darkest tide that almost engulfed her. Diagnosed with a debilitating heart condition after her parents’ death, Cox recovered with the help of medication and the unwavering support of family and friends. Told in frank and unassuming prose, Cox’s story inspires one to celebrate life in every season. So dive in and take a dip in this engaging read! Contributed by Shirley Lim
