Murphy's Picasso WebQuest by Steven Murphy
Introduction Introduction
Tragedy by Picasso
Web Quest- What’s Under the Surface of the Art World? “Proverbio XXIX” by Antonio Machado states that there really is no set road in life but rather that the road is made by the walking. This is as true in learning as it is in life. Sometimes what we start to learn in one field, or for one purpose, leads us to experiences we would not have predicted.
This WebQuest will take you to several cities in search of information regarding Picasso and his art. Along the way you may also learn a bit about foreign travel and Spanish artists in general. During this WebQuest you will have two sections of questions. The answers for these questions will be provided in the accompanying web links. After you have answered the questions proceed to the last step. This will include a challenge involving travel planning. There will be special prizes awarded for the first three students who meet the criteria for the travel planning section.
WE BEGIN! Let’s imagine for a moment that your rich Uncle Floyd has taken you from NYC where you live to Washington DC for a little “bonding” time. You chose to humor him because there has always been talk of Uncle Floyd leaving a large sum of money to a favorite nephew or niece as he has never married nor procreated. After an hour or so at the Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian he pries you away (you have only scratched the surface in your opinion) to “get you some culture” at the National Art Gallery. It is there that you are introduced to “The Tragedy” by Picasso. Uncle Floyd says “There is more here than meets the eye”- You are not sure what he means. He also mentions things like “Blue Period” and Infrared reflectography- which don’t ring a bell at the time.
Here are some helpful sites for what you've read thus far. PICASSO INFRARED BLUE REFLECTOGRAPHY PERIOD Please proceed on to the TASK section of the Quest.
Task Task La Obra On the train ride back to New York he asks you several questions about the painting and what he has said. Lucky for you Amtrak now has Cyber Cafes!! You excuse yourself and go find the answers on the following web site. Remember that the Picasso is listed as an on line exhibit. Click here for PICASSO Help Now you are ready to answer Uncle Floyd’s questions. 1. Why had Picasso painted over the piece of wood so many times? 2. What size is the painting? 3. What are some of the images which have been found underneath through Infrared reflectography? 4. You want to REALLY impress Uncle Floyd so you even throw in a quote from Picasso. He said his paintings were the “Sum of _______________” This little excursion totally turns you on to the world of art! You become fanatical about the works of Picasso- arguably the best known artist of the 20’Th Century!! When you share this new found love with Uncle Floyd he makes you an offer in the form of a competition. Apparently he has made this same trip with several of your cousins. He develops the following test. It has two parts: the first step is to answer all of the next set of questions quickly and accurately. Please proceed on to the PROCESS section of the Quest
Process Process Make sure you have gone to the Task section before coming here. These questions all deal with one of Uncle Floyd's favorite works by Picasso- Guernica. You should be able to answer all questions from the link above. However, you are free to look for information elsewhere 1. What size is the work? _______________________________ 2. When was it created? _______________________________ 3. What day did Picasso start the work? ______________________ 4. What event caused it to be named Guernica? Who did what to whom? With whose permission? How long did the “event” go on? What exactly was used to bring it about? Now that you have answered the tests and are satisfied that you have answered correctly you will email the answers to “Uncle Floyd” AKA

Resources Intro to Resources Below you will find some resources which will help you have a deeper understanding of Spanish language and culture. The worksheet was designed to help you have one place to list all your answers.
Resources Pablo Picasso (unitedstreaming video) http://www.unitedstreaming.com/index.cfm?media_file_id=1086382 Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and ceramist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is considered one of the most dynamic and influential artists of the 20th century. Picasso's Parisian studio attracted the major figures of the avant-garde, including artists and writers such as Matisse, Braque, Apollinaire, and Gertrude Stein. By virtue of his vast energies and overwhelming power of invention: his blue period," rose period," development toward cubism and modern abstraction, and, finally, surrealism, Picasso remains outstanding among the masters of the ages.
