Aston Crews HR9 7LW | 01989 750366 | www.thepennyfarthinginn.com
HE Penny Farthing is a traditional pub in the beautiful village of Aston Crews. It’s a historic pub that offers freshly cooked seasonal food, using the best local ingredients available. With gorgeous views of the Black Mountains and the Malvern hills from the pub’s beer garden, the pub has a unique setting. New owners, Paul Sugden, his partner Deborah Rogan and his sister Jessica Sudge took on the Penny Farthing seven weeks ago after years of running and working in bars. Paul said: “We aim to offer a very traditional menu. “We want to not only provide good pub food but also special restaurant style food as well. “The pub is in a lovely location and it’s a great experience to have the freedom of working for yourself. “We’ve had a lot of support from the community and what we want to do is build up a strong base trade. The pub has been closed for three months which is not too long, but just about long enough for people to notice it has been closed.” As well as utilising local produce, the Penny Farthing also strives to offer local ales. Paul said: “We want the restaurant to develop a good reputation and
ANUFACTURING soft furnishings from the Forest of Dean that are sent around the world is just one of the achievements obtained by a local company. Duncan Roberts, general manager of Calico Interiors explained that a well-known department store in London’s Knightsbridge sold its range and that the Harrods store was one of their many high end clients because of its quality products. But just over 30 years ago things were very different. The company was founded by Pauline Nash who started out from home making curtains and blinds on her well-used sewing machine. A short while later she formalised her business and named it Cottage Curtains and after a few years the enterprise had expanded so much that she had to move into larger premises in Coleford. And despite Calico Interiors manufacturing side expanding into other premises locally, the time has come after almost two decades for the showroom to move from Coleford. Duncan said: “The Company is moving lock stock and barrel to a building that has a purpose built interior combining our workroom, offices and showroom. “At last we have a building that can be used to our specifications and not us trying to work within a restricted space and cramp rooms.
emphasise quality by serving the best in local food. We get everything we can locally – even the ice cream. “We also strive to supply as much local drink as possible. We get wine, vodka and ales locally and being in Herefordshire it goes without saying that the cider is local too.” Adam Pavey, one of the pub’s chefs, has vast experience working in up-market restaurants in London. Ironically, one of Paul’s first ever jobs was working at the pub. He started out as pot washer before moving on. In the coming weeks the Penny Farthing will be hosting an opening event. The details have not yet been finalised, but it will include a taster menu for people to enjoy all the food and drink that will be on offer. This may include desserts, which are all made at the pub. The Penny Farthing has a children’s play area and dogs are welcome in all outside areas and the bar.

“We wanted to centralise all the company’s operations into one building. The former social club in Milkwall is our new home and we have enough space for all of us to work and a much larger showroom and it has an added bonus - plenty of free parking!” Calico Interiors has an equal split between its retail operation and its corporate contracts that includes hotels, including locally the Speech House and the Bells hotel. The company is a manufacturer of soft furnishings for other high end department stores and designers throughout England and Wales. “We are proud of our efforts in the corporate market but as our local customers have supported us over the past three decades, we wanted local people to realise they can purchase high end products quality straight from our new showroom in Milkwall,” added Duncan. “We owe a lot to the individuals from the local area who have helped us to achieve our longevity – long before the days of television make over programmes. “I believe that aside from the high standards we uphold our success is down to our great team and the fact we’ve grown organically in incremental small steps over the years and

OT MANY offices can boast of having a huge bank vault in their midst but at Griffiths Marshall Accountants’ new premises, a monster steel strongroom has become a major feature. The practice has spent the last six months renovating the former HSBC bank building on Lydney’s high street, and has sought to retain as many of its original features including its wooden panelling, to convert it into an office fit for the 21st Century. Ian Price is the partner in charge of the Lydney office and he is no stranger to the area as he grew up in and still lives in Coalway. Ian joined Griffiths Marshall Accountants in 2000 and when the practice bought out Jeremy Williams Accountants nine years later when the owner retired, he was appointed as a partner in the Griffiths Marshall business. Ian took on Mr Williams’ role working above an off license in Lydney’s high street and with the benefit of being part of a long established practice he was able to expand the business even further. And not only did he manage to keep the original firm’s client base intact, but soon he was adding to it. Ian said: “Clients expect us to know the ins and out of running a business in the Forest, something that accountants working out of

Ian added: “We like to be putting something back into the community by sponsoring events like this and we also make regular donations to the Great Oaks Hospice.” Ian’s brother Steven Price has also been welcomed onto the board of Griffiths Marshall Accountants and he will be splitting his time between the new Lydney office and the practice head office in Gloucester.

HE official opening of Griffiths Marshall Accountants’ new premises takes place on Friday, September 20 when visitors will be able to see how the firm has ‘put the heart back’ into the former bank. Neill Ricketts, CEO of Versarien Technologies Ltd based in Cinderford, one of Griffiths Marshall’s major clients, will perform the office opening. Mr Ricketts was also the driving force behind the Forest Apprentice Competition and said: “It’s a big advantage to businesses to be able to have an apprentice on board and for the apprentices themselves it gives them opportunities and experience that would otherwise be very hard to come by.” It is hoped the new offices will provide a hub for local businesses to make use of the extensive accounting, tax and business support and expertise that Griffiths Marshall has to offer.

HEN Griffiths Marshall Accountants acquired the old Midland Bank chambers building in Lydney, preserving the strongroom was the last thing on the company’s mind. But after the accountants had secured the derelict building in Newerne Street by making it watertight for the first time in at least five years, their attention turned to the rusted bank vault and sought quotes for its removal. Senior partner Chris Bourne revealed that they had quotes of around £2,000 for its removal. “And that didn’t even include the cost of hiring a crane to remove the door,” he jokingly added. “So we decided to embrace what we had and so we set about restoring it. “It is now a wonderful feature in our main office and it is now used to store our clients’ files, which are valuable to us, but not as valuable as a bank filled with mountains of those large old fivers, that would have been in circulation at the turn of the 20th Century.”
W
ITH the expansion of the Lydney office into the new bank chambers it strengthens Griffiths Marshall’s reputation within the Forest of Dean as one of the largest independent accountancy firms in Gloucestershire. Chris Bourne, Senior Partner of Griffiths Marshall said, “We’re very excited about our move into the purpose built interior. Our move forms part of our long term strategy of committing to our future in the Forest. “Being located on Lydney’s high street will enable our clients to find us more easily, whilst helping us to showcase the full range of accountancy, tax and auditing services that local businesses, large or small, can benefit from.” Since 2009 Griffiths Marshall has more than doubled the number of employees that are based in its Lydney office and more than 10 members of staff will be operating from the new premises.
L
AUREN Morgan was one of the lucky contestants who gained her place at Griffiths Marshall Accountants after winning the recent final of the Forest Apprentice - a locally based competition emulating Sir Alan Sugar’s style to seek out the best talent in the business world. Lauren, aged 19, said: “I was really pleased to win the competition and the judges obviously saw something in me to judge me as one of the best. “I hope to repay their confidence by doing the best I can to gain the relevant experience while undertaking my qualifications at the Royal Forest of Dean campus of Gloucestershire College.” The competition was held in the spring and was organised by Forest Inspiration – a group of companies willing to offer enthusiastic individuals valuable experience in the world of business and engineering.

neighbouring cities might not fully appreciate. “This was one of the overriding reasons we kept on all the original staff and over the ensuing years we have employed new staff who have a working knowledge of the Forest of Dean.” After four years working out of the small office the practice began to realise that they needed to look around for bigger premises. “We took a shine to the old Midland Bank chambers in Newerne Street, added Ian. “But as it was in a derelict state, having been empty for over five years, we knew it wouldn’t be an easy transformation to bring it back to life. “It has been completely refurbished and we’ve kept as many of the building’s original features like etched windows and wooden screens and panelling as possible.” Ian revealed that if they had set up a brand new operation in 2009 the practice would not be where it is today. He explained: “If we hadn’t taken over Jeremy Williams’s client base, we wouldn’t be in this position today had we started with a blank book.” The Lydney branch now employs 10 members of staff including Forest Apprentice winner Lauren Morgan and Suzie Tooze who has been recruited to join the firm because of her local knowledge and
curtains and blinds.” The new showroom opens on Saturday, September 7 and Duncan reflected on the move: “It will be a wrench to leave Coleford town centre,” he said. “But the relocation allows us to have a fresh start at new premises, new branding and a new logo. “But the change doesn’t mean we’ve let our standards slip as we have spent some 30 years gaining a reputation for high quality and good customer service. “We still believe in old fashioned values that if you keep a customer happy and satisfied they will return time and time again.” Calico will be looking to take on extra staff especially on the fitting and manufacturing side of the business. Duncan explained: We are looking for young people to give them the opportunity of a career in this industry. “Just look what a lot of hard graft and dedication can achieve. Pauline and her family can rightly be proud of what has been achieved over the past three decades.” Calico look forward to welcoming you into their new showroom on Lambsquay Road.

not one big leap that has ultimately been the downfall of many businesses. “We now employ 20 local people, who undertake design sales/admin roles, fitters and seamstress positions. “If you want something to last then you need a good quality product. We don’t use inferior raw materials; we source only the best to make everything you might ever need for the interior of a home.” Most of Calico’s soft furnishings, blinds and flooring are bespoke made to order, but a sample range can be viewed in the showroom. Despite the recession and difficult trading position, Calico Interiors has just recorded its best ever first quarter trading sales figures. Duncan said: “If you’ve been to a housing developer’s show home recently the chances are that we’ve provided the furniture, flooring and soft furnishings to illustrate what it could look like if you bought the house. “We also work alongside architects who are designing homes with all the latest gadgets and gizmos including automated

HIS Saturday Newent will once again be hosting the biggest onion festival in the world. The Newent Onion Fayre is back on September 13 as is the traditional onion crunching eating competition. The event begins on Saturday with Bill ‘The Bell’ Turberfield, a town crier opens the proceedings from Newent’s Market Square. The day will be packed with a variety of family fun events. At 1pm the audience will gather at the main stage for the great Onion Eating Competition. Competitors come from all over the globe to attempt this feat. The first round of the competition is the women’s event. Each entrant is given a five ounce peeled raw onion to eat in the fastest time possible. The second round sees the men chomp their way through an even bigger onion, a whopping seven ouncer.
ONION FAYRE
Once the onion is consumed the contestant has to hold their arms outstretched and mouth wide open for the judges to declare them the winner. The Onion Show, staged in the Memorial Hall, is unique in that all exhibits are only from the Onion Family, or Alliums to give them their correct name. As well as onions, exhibits are invited for blanch leeks, pot leeks, garlic and chives. Exhibitors from all over England and Wales have been bringing their exhibits for the last 18 years. There are excellent cash prizes to be won, as well as trophies for the winners of the various classes. There are also classes for children and adults to show
off their artistic talents by making an animal out of vegetables especially onions, of course. Three new classes to test competitors’ culinary skills were introduced in 2012. These cookery classes all featured onions of course! The Memorial Hall opens to the public as soon after 10.30am as possible on the day, when judging is complete. Onion Show Trophies, which are held by winners for one year, will be presented at 4.30pm on the day. The day long event will also feature live music, street entertainers, dancing, animal displays, fairground rides, exhibitions, lakeside events and over 100 stands with arts, crafts and plants to name but a few. Among the line-up of bands for 2014 are

the Roving Crows who play a mixture of folk, Celtic and country rock. One of the UK’s leading and most authentic Abba tribute acts, Swede Dreamz, will also be taking to the stage. Also appearing are the Sons of Navarone, a seven piece band playing old school ska with a bit of Two-Tone thrown in for good measure. The Onion Fayre has its origins dating back to the mediaeval period and is included in a charter of King Henry III issued during the 13th Century. The current incarnation is now in its 19th year and since 1995 when a group of volunteers re-established the event it now draws in some 15,000 people to Newent town centre.
