Competency Assessment Explanation At the time of submission of this substantive change application, every individual question in every NCM course has been linked with its corresponding Essential Competency using a numbering system. This applies to both knowledge competencies and skills competencies addressed within the academic curriculum. An initial curriculum review has been accomplished to sufficiently update the current version of the curriculum. Once a final curriculum review is achieved simultaneously with the development of the online courses (see description below), NCM will be entirely assured that every Essential Competency is thoroughly and efficiently covered in its curriculum. Please Note: Skills competencies are ultimately evaluated in person in clinical settings by clinical preceptors. This will continue to be achieved through documentation of student mastery of NARM skills and completion of required clinical experience. However, the academic information linked to the skills competencies are an integral part of NCM’s curriculum and will be taught and assessed in the online courses. These “skills competencies” (as they are referred to in the MEAC Curriculum Checklist) will be evaluated in the same manner as the knowledge competencies. (Please see Competency Assessment Examples Document). Acquisition of these competencies will be documented in the form of a final grade submitted online by academic instructors. The student transcripts with final grades are kept on a cloud based system and also within student files at the administrative office. NARM skills documentation is also kept in student files. Before launch of the online program, NCM plans to also link each NARM skill with the Essential Competencies so that when clinical preceptors verify students’ successful demonstration of the skill to mastery level, they will simultaneously be ensuring that the student has achieved competency in the linked Essential Skills Competency. Once NCM hires and trains its online academic instructors, these instructors will be asked to begin the process of course development. The numbering system which links individual questions within each course to their corresponding Essential Competencies will be extremely helpful not only in ensuring that all Essential Competencies are thoroughly covered within the curriculum but also in consolidating areas of the curriculum that currently contain redundancies. This will improve focused attention on achievement of the competencies. Academic instructors will take responsibility for entire modules whenever possible. This way they can help ensure that this process works effectively within each grouping of courses.
Benchmark II.C1 (2.10) Action: Provide examples of all tools and or rubrics used to assess competency for ONE knowledge competency and ONE skill competency in at least one course with a distance education component.
