WELCOME TO LODI FARMS NURSERY! Here’s our story... Long, long ago (OK, back in 1986) Dan and Jane Riddle began a landscape contracting business called Timberscapes out of their house in Saline. The business steadily grew, and was moved to the present 18-acre location on Wagner and Waters Roads in 1987. In 1988 Dan and Jane’s new house (with the window that inspired the logo) was built. Their daughter, Rachel, was designed and added in 1989. We began the retail nursery in 1992, with a prayer and a onepage price list. People were pleased with the level of service and quality of the plants so they kept coming back, told their friends, and we kept growing! We added the greenhouse in 1995 which everyone appreciated on wet or cold days. During that time we had a kids gardening club, participated in the Ann Arbor Flower Show, and started growing some of our own plants. During the last 5 years we’ve expanded Landscape Contracting, and, in 2003, bought a 56-acre tree farm in Parma, Michigan (just west of Jackson). Our success comes from God’s blessings, a great staff, wonderful customers and hard work! It’s fun to come and shop for plants here--we have crazy sale days, including hopscotch day, sing a TV theme song, find the cats or hug the dog and lots more! Stop by often to see what’s new, what’s blooming, what’s on sale and how we can help you!! We will make every effort to have the plants listed in our catalog in stock; however, some plants are subject to availablility, and popular plants can sell out. We may have other plants not listed in the catalog. Prices are subject to change. Feel free to call to check if the plant you want is in stock. We may be able to special order plants at certain times of the year.

NEED BARK? (or topsoil? or woodchips? or stones?) Here’s our “magic formula” to find out how much you need! Our bulk materials are sold by the “cubic yard.” Here’s how to determine how much you need to order. Start by measuring in feet, then TAKE LENGTH X WIDTH = AREA DIVIDE AREA BY 27 (THIS GIVES YOU 12” THICK OF MATERIAL) DIVIDE THIS TO GET TO THE THICKNESS YOU WANT. We recommend a minimum of 4” thick for bark to keep the plants protected and the weeds away (so divide by 3) and at least 2” thick for topsoil (divide by 6) and 4” of plant mix (divide by 3). Our minimum delivery is 3 yards (of the same material--we can’t mix materials in one truck) and there is no additional delivery charge for Saline or Ann Arbor (except 48105 zip code) and reasonable delivery charges for Dexter, Ypsilanti, etc. Every delivery now has a $5 fuel surcharge. Call us and compare prices and check our Calendar Of Savings for sales! If you have an open-bed pickup truck or trailer (or a friend with one that owes you a favor) we will load our bulk materials into your truck or trailer. Sorry, we can’t do our bulk materials by the bushel or bags. Other pre-bagged materials are available too.

OUR FURRY FRIENDS “Where are the cats today?” is a common question of many customers (and especially the kids) when they stop in. Usually you’ll find our cats somewhere in the greenhouse--in baskets, on the counter, running thru with a mouse in their mouths...and they’re always willing to be adored--or fed! We’ve got a nice group of cats, almost all related, and with good nursery names, of course: Tulip and Violet (brother and sister) and Thyme (their cousin), and our two new kitties Gracillimus and Cosmopolitan (Gracie and Cosmo) named after grasses of course! They will learn to be nursery cats--eventually! Our Great Dane,” Holly (Princess of Lodi)” , shown here on vacation in Florida, is now six years old and calmer--at last! She’s all black, with a white design on her chest, and white on her paws. Ask us about her addiction to peanut butter! She enjoys her role as nursery dog. Best of all, she likes other dogs, (most of the time) so if you bring your dog with you, and we’re not too busy, maybe our pups can play!
Our beloved first Great Dane, Concolor, died in March of 2002. He was only 7 years old and we miss him still. Con was loved by everyone and was very popular on and “Bring The Dog A Raw Potato Day.” He was unique and we’ll never forget him. To all our cherished nursery animals, including our original nursery dog, Phoenix, a flock of ducks from the flower show, many beloved kitties and now our precious Concolor, we miss you all and wish you sweet rest at the Rainbow Bridge. 8

B&B does not mean “Bed and Breakfast!” It refers to the root ball of larger shrubs and trees. The roots are dug up in a BALL and wrapped in BURLAP. Leave the burlap on when you plant-just untie any nylon ropes around the base of the plant. Burlap and any biodegradable rope will rot and the wire basket will rust away.

CLUMP is a short way of writing “multistemed trunk” used to describe trees with more than one main trunk. These can include serviceberry, redbud, magnolia, and birch trees.. think “more trunks, more flowers!” CONTAINER GROWN are plants grown from the start in pots rather than in the ground. Same results!

REPLANTING ANN ARBOR Recommended Trees for Street Extensions Lodi Farms is a pre-authorized nursery for city of Ann Arbor street tree replacements. The City of Ann Arbor Foresty Department has a list of acceptable trees, based on the size of the homeowner’s lawn extension and open area between trees. We have taken this list and created our own list based on our tree inventory. We’ve found this helps customers who want to look at the varieties of trees available before making their selection.
Many customers come in feeling very violated that their trees have died thru no fault of their own. Please know that we will do everything we can to make this purchase and installation of your new trees go as smoothly as possible.
The new requirements are that the authorized nursery (us) obtain the permit for site review; call Miss Dig for underground utility locations; and deliver and install the tree. The homeowner (you) is able to receive a federal property tax deduction letter to credit up to $1,000 upon receipt of the paid tree instillation invoice and the authorized Forestry Permit.
We are also giving a 20% discount on the price of up to two (2) trees to be planted on street extensions.
SMALL TREES (25’ mature height; 6’wide extension and 30ft open area between trees) Paperbark Maple Serviceberry Redbud Kwanzan Cherry
If you have questions, please call us or the Forestry Department of Ann Arbor (994-2768). A complete copy of the pdf file from the City of Ann Arbor is available at

How Do I Plant A Tree? Step One: How Deep? Dig the hole no deeper than the rootball and at least 4” to 12” wider than the root ball. As you dig, watch the layers of soil you encounter, noting changes in color or texture. If you have 1” or less “topsoil” (darker color than soil deeper down) plant the tree so that 3”-4” of the root ball is above the ground. When in doubt, plant high! Step Two: How Wide? Use your shovel as a tape measure. Lay the shovel across the top of the root ball; remember the spot on the shovel and measure the hole as you go. Do the same thing for the depth by holding the shovel next to the root ball; noting the top and subtracting 3”-4”. Step Three: In The Hole! If this is a large tree, get help! One person to hold the “head” (top) of the tree while the other person rolls the tree into the hole. When the root ball enters the hole, push up on the head so the root ball doesn’t go into the hole sideways. Don’t forget to untie the top branches of tall trees! Step Four: Straighten and Backfill Tie some ribbon on the best side before it goes into the hole. If you need to rotate, grab the wire or rope on the root ball and turn carefully. Once the tree is straight, use the existing soil to back fill the hole. Fill it up half way. Add water. Then mix topsoil, compost, peat or pine bark with the remaining soil in the upper 4” to 6” of the hole. DO NOT REMOVE THE WIRE BASKET OR BIODEGRADABLE TWINE OR BURLAP FROM THE ROOT BALL! Remove nylon twine from around the trunk. Step Five: Build A Watering Ring Build a ridge 4” to 6” out and around the edge of the root ball, at the same or slightly higher than the tree. Tamp the soil firm and smooth. Step Six: Water Water Water! Water 20-20-2: 20% hose volume, for 20 minutes, two times a week during dry periods. Check out our GATOR BAGS to make it easier!!
YOUR LAWN SPRINKLERS WILL NOT SUPPLY ENOUGH WATER FOR TREES OR SHRUBS! 56
LANDSCAPING SERVICES..QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS! What are you LOOKING FOR in a landscape? What THINGS would you like to see in your landscape? What PLANTS do you enjoy and wish to incorporate? Do you have a THEME or FEELING you want an area to have? Justin: THE “answer guy” for all your landscape construction and design questions!
Any views to block or screen?
If you need to block neighbors, streets, buildings, etc., think about the times of the year when the view bothers you the most, how tall a plant would have to be to block, how long of an area you’d need to plant, and things like that.
What direction does your house face? Do you have lots of wind?
Sun exposure (hours and intensity) and wind exposure (direction and blocking) are very important in plant selection. If the plant you want won’t be happy where you want it, we can always find alternatives that will be happy in your specific conditions.
Any colors to include? Colors to avoid? How do you feel about flowers, berries, fruits, and leaves?
Consider your house, existing plants, and your favorite colors. If you really hate yellow and pink, we’ll do our best to avoid them! Keep in mind that flowers and fruits can bring birds, bees and butterflies, and that every plant will require at least some care!
“I found this plant on HGTV, the internet or in a magazine, and I just HAVE to have it!”
GROAN! Let us know what you like about the plant, and we’ll work hard to find something with similar (or even better!) features that will grow in our area!
57
LANDSCAPING SERVICES..QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS! (page Two!) Do you plan to add or change any existing hardscapes (walkways, patios, walls, etc.?) “I love stones! What kind of materials do you use for your walls and patios?”
Change that straight concrete walk before you install the new japanese maple! Plants and hardscapes need to be incorporated into your overall landscape design, to keep both function and beauty. Stonework is very popular, but when overdone, can give the “Fred Flintstone look” to a landscape. Our stone or boulder walls, rock outcroppings, or flagstone stairs, have a natural, genuine look, and fully integrate into your garden’s other features.
How much are you planning to spend? Do you have a range or a budget?
This is a difficult question, for both you and for us, but very necessary too! Having a budget number to work with helps us choose size of plants, type of materials, size of planting beds, quantity of plants, and so much more. This helps limit the “oh my!” moment in the landscape process.
“Why do you charge for your consultations when other places give them for free?”
A frequently-asked question of many of our customers. When Justin comes to do a consult, you have his promise and ours that he is completely focused on your needs, and any design suggestions are personalized--not from a book, or the same as your neighbors. It is for this level of personal service, time, and expertise, that we charge.
