The Tobacconist
BOOK REVIEW
1
9 3 7. Adolf Hitler is making his move to militarise Germany and get her ready for war. Franz quickly learns from Otto that to be a good tobacconist one must read newspapers and know one’s cigars. First, reading newspapers requires a full reading of all the newspapers, not just “a quick leaf-through”. They must be read from cover to cover, but if not that, at least the front page, the editorial,

and the commentaries on politics. Otto teaches Franz that “[c]igarettes were to a tobacconist what bread rolls were to a baker”. No one buys cigarettes and bread rolls just for their taste. Cigarettes and bread are bought because the buyer is “either hungry or addicted”. Cigars are different. “Only by selling cigars could a serious tobacconist’s become a perfect tobacconist’s; only the aroma, the scent, the taste and flavour of a proper range of cigars transformed a standard newspaper kiosk with smoking accessories into a temple of mind and senses.” Otto tells Franz, “A bad cigar tastes like horseshit, but a good one tastes like tobacco. A very good cigar, on the other hand, tastes like the world.” Thus Franz begins his apprenticeship and meets many of Otto’s regular customers, including an eccentric woman who was twicemarried. Both her husbands had doctorate degrees but had made “their final journey to the Central Cemetery: their doctorates and titles, however remained, and were proudly borne thereafter by the widow Heinzl”. Hence she referred to herself as Frau Dr Dr Henzl. Another was Hubert Panstingl, a Social Democrat, although the party was banned. Panstingl was popularly known as Red Egon. One day, Franz is introduced to another of Otto’s regular customers, an old man who smells of “soap, onions, cigars, and somehow also, interestingly, of sawdust”. “That was

Professor Sigmund Freud,” Otto tells Franz. “But he can do a lot more than fix rich idiots’ heads . . . he can teach people how to lead a decent life.” One day Franz decides to chat up Professor Freud to find out whether Otto had told the truth. Freud confirmed it. The brief end of that conversation illustrates the wit that pervades the novel:
to seek further advice. Professor Freud tells him that he will write him three prescriptions. The first, for his headache, is to stop thinking about love. The second, for his stomach ache and confusing dreams, is to write down all his dreams as soon as he wakes up. The third, for his heartache, was to “get the girl back — or forget about her”.
‘And how do you go about it all?’ ‘People lie down on my couch and start talking.’ ‘That sounds comfortable.’ ‘The truth is seldom comfortable,’ Freud contradicted him
Franz, eventually finds the Bohemian girl, and in the course of which, he finds out a secret about her. He continues to confide in Professor Freud, who has by this time, taken a liking to Franz. Franz, without fail, offers Professor Freud a well rolled cigar, a Hoyo de Monterrey – “Harvested by brave men on the sunny, fertile banks of the San Juan y Martinez River and tenderly hand-rolled by their beautiful women”.
That sets the stage for a tumultuous time for not only Franz, but also Otto, and Professor Freud. It begins when Franz discloses a restlessness about himself that he cannot manage. Seeing that Franz is a youthful and hearty young man, Professor Freud tells him he has nothing to worry about. He just needs a girlfriend. So one day when Otto has given him his day off, Franz sets off for the amusement park to find himself a girl. He finds, and is immediately enamoured with a Bohemian girl. He invites her to sit with him in the giant Ferris wheel. She declines, but proposes that he takes her to the shooting gallery. They have a wonderful time together but she disappears after that without even leaving her name. Franz spends the next few weeks trying to locate that girl, and in the interim, he goes to Professor Freud’s house
Now the clouds of war roll by. Professor Freud is not just a doctor. He is also a Jew. Otto has lots of Jewish customers. Professor Freud flees Vienna. Red Egon commits suicide. Otto is arrested. Eventually, the Gestapo marches into Vienna in 1938. The last chapter closes seven years later, in 1945, focusing on Otto’s tobacco shop.

Think Simple: How Smart Leaders Defeat Complexity
BOOK REVIEW
I
n our digital age we see the rising tide of a grand paradox. Life seems to be accelerating forward much more rapidly than it did a couple of decades ago. Yet many things seem to be getting either more complex or complicated – the two are not the same. Something that is complicated need not be complex. A jet engine for example, appears complicated to many people but to an engineer who understands it, it is simple. Something is complex when it comprises many elements that combine to produce an uncertain result. Throughout this book, Segall uses the terms “complex” as well as “complicated” as the opposite of simple. His example at the beginning of the book concerns driving. “When you don’t know how to drive a car, it seems complicated,” he says. “But once you know how to drive a car, it’s quite simple.” He does not agree with people who think that “faster, better, cheaper” is an unattainable goal. This book is directed primarily at businesses, institutions, and organisations, but it is also helpful at the personal level. Chapter One is about an organisation’s mission statement, but it applies if we want to have a personal motto. “A complex mission may appease different points of view within the company, but it’s less likely to create focus among employees, and more likely to confuse customers.” He cites two good examples. Apple has: “Mission: Provide relevant, compelling solutions that customers can only get from Apple”. Amazon’s is even better – “One Click Away”.

Ken Segall 2016 Penguin Call No. English 658.4092 SEG - [BIZ]
Segall tells the story of Canada’s Joe Fresh fashion brand. The Weston family wanted Joe Mimran to help the Weston family’s Loblaw supermarkets sell apparel. The Loblaw supermarkets have an annual business of $35m. Joe came up with a unique but simple brand mission. He created the name “Joe Fresh” to resonate with the fresh food in the supermarket. He made quality apparel, and sold them at affordable prices. The same ‘simple’ approach led to the creation and growth of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, which, ironically, started their business development in a garage. Segall believes that simplicity is important to the culture of an organisation. Sometimes it is already part of the culture, but at other times the organisation “must instil simplicity in a culture that has grown complicated over time”. Hence, large, bureaucratic organisations find the going tough because they lack the simplicity to motivate their employees, make decisions, communicate, and interact with customers. He emphasises that simplicity goes together with the idea of excellence. If one is not committed to excellence, he is committed to mediocrity. When everyone tried to unravel the complicated Gordian knot, Alexander the Great solved the puzzle by a single slice of his sword. An organisation cannot develop or nurture a culture of simplicity if it lacks a leader who revels in it. Thus Segall devotes an entire chapter developing this point in his chapter: Simplicity Loves a Leader. The leader must

serve the role as ‘Chief Uncomplicator’. John McGrath, the CEO of an Australian real estate company filters complexity from his business plans. He demands them to be “written as concisely as humanly possible”. McGrath is quoted as saying: “I don’t like any more than a page. It’s all about pulling back to the essential bits. The manifestation of simplicity is removing the layers of complexity, the excuses, and all the unnecessary and unproductive debate.” That’s why he says, “Complexity is easy. Simplicity is harder.” One has to work hard at it. Stubhub founder Jeff Fluhr epitomises leading an organisation in excelling at communication, collaboration, and simplification. He does not tolerate management by committee. But one has to be careful when simplifying, Segall warns, because simplicity alone is not the answer. One has to be mindful of timing. In this regard, he tells the story of J.C. Penny which poached Apple’s Ron Johnson to revitalise its business. Ron proceeded with his simplification format that was so successful at Apple, but failed at J.C. Penny because he rushed his plans, and at the same time he was reluctant to cut the deadwood from the 100-year-old company.
which Pepsi would spend $30m to buy iMacs to give away as prizes. Steve Jobs explained: “We move three thousand iMacs but we don’t get to tell anybody who we are, what we stand for, or why it matters . . . We’re just a gift that you might get if you happen to buy the lucky can of Pepsi.” In the rest of the book, Segall tells us that simplicity is a concept that applies to all kinds of businesses and all types of organisations. It “fits all sizes”. It is about being sleeker, optimising choices, and making choices feel simpler. He reminds us that “less process equals more speed”. Creative people in advertising “refuse to even think about starting work until they’re given a brief that fits into a single page. And no cheating with small font sizes and reduced margins”. Finally, Segall tells us that simplicity is instinctive. It’s easy if you know how.
The Alexandrian
Simplicity also involves being true to the brand and, often, to the core business. Segall cites the examples of brand conscious carmakers like Porsche and BMW. He says deepening the brand is the answer, not cheapening the brand. Steve Jobs killed a sales gimmick attempted by Pepsi. Pepsi persuaded an Apple salesman to convince Jobs to agree to a promotion in

There are many unsolved mysteries about the human body, one of which is how the human brain processes memories. Do you remember your happiest or saddest moments? Are you able to recall what you did on a particular day of your life? This documentary explains how the brain stores memories by comparing memories in our brain to books in a library or files on a computer. Using this analogy, can ‘lost’ memories also be recalled and modified then? Researchers seem to think so, and this documentary includes their findings and experiments with memory recall and modification. This thought-provoking documentary will certainly trigger your interest in the human brain and how it works. Contributed by Chan Pan Fong
