Difference between Tamper Evident & Tamper Proof Labels Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, food security has become a necessity for the food & beverage production industry. The F & B industry saw dramatic changes during the pandemic. Whether it is a packaged food product or food delivery, brands are taking the necessary steps to keep the ingredients within the package, safe, fresh & untouched. Particularly important in the food & beverage industry, customers demand a sense of assurance that their food will reach them in a fresh and sanitary manner.
Here we have listed the difference between the two most used and important labels in the food industry.
Tamper Evident Labels Tamper evident labels are typically small label strips placed on a product’s packaging, for “sealing” the container. The main purpose of a tamper-evident label is to reveal if the container has been opened at any time after the packaging process. The tamper-evident label typically doesn't cover the whole package but is simply large enough to secure the lid and to make any tampering noticeable. Tamper evident labels are commonly used for “take away” containers and boxes in the food & beverage industry and are strong enough to seal a container and durable enough to withstand handling until it is ready to be unboxed
for consumption. Tamper evident labels are designed to tear easily when the customer is ready to open the container.
Tamper Proof Labels
Unlike the tiny strips that typically describe tampering evident labels; tamper-proof labels are much larger and protect larger surfaces of the packaging. Tamper-proof labels are typically placed over the lids and caps of bottles, securing the contents inside. These label seals cannot easily be ripped, but need to be cracked open with force or cut off, eliminating the risk of the contents being tampered with before consumption. If the tamper-proof label is compromised or removed, it's clear that the contents are possibly unsafe for consumption. Tamper-proof labels offer a clearer indication that a product has been tampered with; in comparison to tamper-evident labels.
Even though both tamper-evident and tamper-proof labels provide evidence of tampering, they perform in different ways. Businesses packaging beverages or pharmaceutical products commonly choose tamper-proof labels to make sure the integrity of their products. These labels are placed on top of the lids of goods in their entirety and are designed to be difficult to rip, often requiring heat or force to do so. Since the label can't be partially removed, there's clear evidence the container has been opened.
Businesses within the food & beverage industry (specifically the restaurant industry) most frequently use tamper-evident labels on the takeout containers, drinks and pizza boxes.
