Which Stitch Where? Choosing Needlepoint Stitches I posted this on the Needlepoint Facebook Group yesterday: “I have a question for the group: I'm starting a new project. Stitching a sample for a new shape. It's a needlepoint bag. My question is should I do it all in tent/basketweave? (I like stitching tent/basketweave) or can I do it with some decorative stitches? I'm worried about use/snagging? I've never stitched a bag/purse before. Any suggestions are so appreciated!!! Thank you!!”
I got GREAT suggestions from: all basketweave to don’t go larger than over 3 mesh threads. Armed with all this great information I thought I would play around with some ideas. I pulled up Skitch app http://evernote.com/skitch/
First I had to get the count right. I’ll always choose fooling around with stitches on the computer than on the canvas. I hate ripping out. Somehow I just think better working ideas out this way. And thanks to Robin King’s blog for showing me how! http://needlepointstudyhall.blogspot.com I still thought I wanted to do something with a little texture, interest and speed for the stripes. I looked through my little library of needlepoint stitches on my website. http://www.barbarabergstendesigns.com/new_page_1.htm
The Corduroy Stitch is one of my favorites for a stripe. I really wanted to work it in. The way things were counting out I picked Mosaic Stitch to border the Corduroy Stitch.
The navy stripes were harder to visualize. I thought I would try to mimic the Corduroy Stitch, but the count wouldn’t work. Then I thought divide the navy stripe with the Mosaic Stitch. That gave me 6 on each side. The Corduroy Stitch still wouldn’t work, but Scotch Stitch would work. I’m going to try staggering them.
Here’s the thread pull. The navy looks black in the picture, but it's a really pretty navy. I’ll be stitching this while driving down to school with my daughter. I’ll post progress! If you have any ideas I’d love to hear them!!!
