14th Annual Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest Poets Wanted! Enter Now! Special Young Poets Category! The 14th Annual Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest officially begins in April, as part of the celebration of National Poetry Month. The theme for this year’s contest is “The Magic of ‘If . . .’ Through the Power of Poetry.” There are five new categories: “If I Could See The Future,” “If I Could Travel Back In Time,” “If I Had A Robot That Knew Everything,” “If I Believed Anything Was Possible,” “If Money Grew On Trees.” Poets may submit a maximum of three poems, no more than one in each of three of the five contest categories. Poems may be in rhyme, free verse, Haiku or other accepted poetry forms and of any length, up to a maximum of 60 lines. Everyone is encouraged to enter the contest. Poets do not have to live in Lincoln, CA to be eligible. Young Poets, 18-years of age or under, are encouraged to submit poems and will compete in a special “Young Poets” category. Entry Forms and Contest Rules are available in the rack next to the Front Desk at the Lincoln Public Library at Twelve Bridges and can be downloaded from the following website: www.libraryatlincoln.org under “NEWS.” Entry Forms must be received no later than Saturday, July 21, 2018. Winners will read their poems on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at the Voices of Lincoln Special Event to be held from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the Willow Room at the Lincoln Public Library at Twelve Bridges, 485 Twelve Bridges Drive, Lincoln, CA. Winners also will be presented with a commemorative chapbook of the winning poems. 1. POETS WANTED! 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be selected in each contest category. 2. The five (5) contest categories include the following: If I Could See The Future, If I Could Travel Back In Time, If I Had A Robot That Knew Everything, If I Believed Anything Was Possible, If Money Grew On Trees. 3. Poets may submit a maximum of three (3) poems. Select three (3) of the contest categories and submit one poem from each. 4. Poems may be in rhyme, free verse, Haiku, or other accepted poetry forms and of any length, up to a maximum of 60 lines. 5. Poems should be written in English. They should be typewritten and not centered (read left to right). Please use the Arial font 12-point. The title should be listed at the top of the poem and the category should be included at the top right corner of the poem page. The name of the poet should not be indicated on the poem. 6. Young Poets, 18-years of age or under, are encouraged to submit poems and will compete in a special “Young Poets” category. Young poets should follow the same rules as noted above. However, they should include their age, grade, and school on the Entry Form. 7. All poems must be submitted on hard copy to the address listed on the Entry Form below and must be received no later than Saturday, July 21, 2018. 8. Early submissions are appreciated. The Hike & Cycle Scholarship – Deadline March 11, 2018 Nature-Saving Rules Contest PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS You must be currently enrolled in high school, university, or college. Applications from all countries are accepted. You must create an original list of nature-saving rules (according to the requirements listed below). The winners will be required to send us proof of their educational status.
REASONS TO APPLY 1. The first place winner will get $1,000 and the second place, $500. Note: each participant may send in only one submission and win only one award. 2. We use student-generated content to write articles and make infographics on various topics concerning the environment. Your contribution will help raise awareness among people reading our blog posts! 3. The best authors can count on their writing being published on our blog. Naturally, that means our readers will see your name! 4. Winners will receive individual certificates from HikeAndCycle.com.
PARTICIPATION RULES 1. Prepare a list of nature-saving rules on one of the following subjects: The Nature-Saving Rules of Responsible Camping How Hikers Can Make Sure That They Don’t Hurt Wildlife Recommendations for Responsible Behavior Near Bodies of Water You’re free to focus on a specific outdoor activity (climbing, cycling, kayaking, etc.) or write more generally. 1. Make up a creative, catchy title that reflects your ideas. 2. Share the scholarship post on social media using Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. The links to the shared post must be sent along with your application. 3. Send your list and all necessary links to
[email protected]. By sending us your application, you confirm that you understand the rules of participation and that you are willing to accept the decision of the judges.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS 1. Your work must be structured in the form of a list and must be directly connected to one of the three given topics. 2. Your list must: Be written in English Include five to ten rules Be no longer than 400 words Be 100% plagiarism-free (see details at Wikipedia.org) Have a file name of “Nature_Scholarship_First Name_Last Name” Be sent in .doc or .docx format Be submitted within the deadline Note that submission starts on November 1, 2017, and ends at midnight EST on March 11, 2018. 3. Your list must be shared on social media. If you have some unorthodox or groundbreaking ideas, you should definitely give this contest a try! We encourage all participants to show their creative side. Although the preferred number of rules on the list is five to ten, four or even eleven rules may be accepted. But only if the rules are good enough to deserve it!
HOW WE EVALUATE YOUR WORK We have a special panel of skillful writers and editors with significant experience in hiking, camping, and various outdoor activities. These judges will evaluate your work based on these requirements: 1. Usefulness. Make sure that your advice can be practically implemented and is helpful. (40 points) 2. Originality. The more daring and unorthodox your ideas are, the greater your chances of winning! (30 points) 3. Clarity. Your work should get straight to the point without unnecessary digressions. (30 points) CHOOSING THE WINNER ONLINE On April 1, 2018, HikeAndCycle.com will publish the seven most outstanding lists, and from there, our online audience will be the judge. What’s the mechanism for voting? It’s simple: the writer with most shares of his or her post on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ will have higher chances of winning! Our support team will make sure that cheating is not possible. On April 20, 2018, we will count the shares. To determine the final scholarship winners, we will take into consideration the results of online voting as well as the opinion of our esteemed experts.
AWARDS On April 27, 2018, HikeAndCycle.com will publish the list of winners. Once proof of enrollment has been provided, the two winners will receive their awards. App Contest for High School Students in Mark DeSaulnier’s District Monday, July 31st, 2017
Calling all high school coders who live or attend school in California’s 11th Congressional District! Do you enjoy coding? If so, here’s a contest for you to design, create, and submit your own software application for any platform (mobile, web, desktop, etc.). Below is a summary of the Congressional App Challenge Rules: Students may compete as individuals or in teams of up to four. Submissions must be original, and created within one calendar year of the closing of the submission period. Students entering the competition must submit a short video demonstration explaining their app and a completed questionnaire online by 12:00 p.m. EST on November 1, 2017. Zachary’s Art Contest is officially up and running! How Does the Art Contest Work? Deadline: May 31, 2017 Open to all ages! The subject of the artwork should be Zachary’s Chicago Pizza and the artwork should include either our logo and/or name. You may use the medium of your choice, but we
recommend VIBRANT, SATURATED choices like paint, dark pastels or digital art. Colored pencils and crayons tend to get washed out against other pieces in our restaurant. Please remember, some of the art will be hanging up high so utilize the space you are given. Fill it up and make it bold! We are accepting four different sizes for art pieces (26 x 26, 24 x 36, 32 x 32, 36 X 48). Pre-cut paper is available at any Zachary’s location. All winning artwork and any reproductions of the artwork become property of Zachary’s Chicago Pizza and will not be returned.

The Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County is seeking a new Arts Recognition award. This award honors individuals and art organizations whose work has had a significant impact in Contra Costa County. We are seeking an artist from Contra Costa County to design and create an original art piece that can be duplicated. Recognizing that original art does vary from piece to piece, we request that several “awards” can be made that are similar in size and shape. Short Story, Poetry, and Essay Contest! $1000 prizes for each category! Tuesday, April 4th, 2017
Hourglass Literary Magazine presents a short story, poetry, and essay competition. Winning Entry in each category will receive US$1000 as prize money. Deadline: April 30, 2017 ($5000 total cash prizes!) We only accept submissions online via Submittable. Entry fee: $15 USD per submission (except for Best Poem category where up to three submissions are accepted for the same price). Entry fee for authors who want to compete with more than one work in the category for the best essay, best short story is 25 USD for three works.
BEST SHORT STORY
Text for a short story should not exceed 7000 words or be less than 700 words.
BEST POEM
There are no strict limits, provided that poems should not have more than 3500 words. Author, writer competing in the category for the best poem can submit up to three works.

Rocio Perez, High School Award Winner – 2016 Topic: “Do Your Little Bit of Good” Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu once said, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” Everyone, even the young, has the power to change the world around them for the better. There are many members in our communities, young and old, rich and poor, people of all races and religions, who are finding new ways to resist the negative influences of racism and inequality that are all around us.. What ideas do you have on how can you create peace in your community and in the world? What are the small acts you can do to make the world a better place? Using your unique, artistic voice, create a visual and/or literary interpretation that conveys little bits of good.
