Research Council
Mission: To advance and promote research in wilderness medicine in clinical and basic science disciplines. Objectives: -Award research grants to wilderness medical society members in all stages of their career. -Provide a forum for disseminating results and discussing research projects at the Research forum at the WMS Summer Conference -Highlight outstanding contributions to wilderness medical research through oral and poster presentation awards -Improve the quality of wilderness medicine research by setting standard requirements for grants and abstracts -Provide education and resources for wilderness medicine researchers Goals: We are a group of WMS members with experience and interest in wilderness medical research. We promote and encourage wilderness medical research in several ways. One of the most important is through the annual research forum at the WMS Summer Meeting. Here, members and non-members can present and receive feedback on their work in moderated poster and oral forums. The best poster and best oral presentations receive awards based on specified grading criteria and research council members serve as judges. Last year’s research award winners were James Lang, who won $500 for best oral presentation for "Oral L-Tyrosine Supplementation Improved Core Temperature Maintenance to Whole-Body Cold Exposure in Older Adults" and Juan Campodonico who won $100 for best poster presentation for "Voluntary Ventilatory Response v/s Acetazolamide in Acute Mountain Sickness. Preliminary findings of RCT." In addition, both winners got to pick a WMS logo item from the WMS shop. We hope they wear it proudly! We had a great turn out in Breckenridge and we hope to see more of you in 2018 in Midway, Utah. For more information on Research Forum and how to submit abstracts go here. In addition to the WMS Research Forum, the council fosters research with several competitive grant awards to WMS members with outstanding projects in all stages of their careers, from medical and graduate students to seasoned professors. Previously funded projects range from bench science to clinical field studies. WMS grants have resulted in many publications for winners and have greatly contributed to the advancement of our field. A future blog post will highlight some of the important knowledge that has come from WMS funded grants. Blog
