New Buses on Order
Gear Up
October is School Bus Month. Our great professional school bus drivers and support staff, including the fine mechanics at JDs Trucking, maintain our bus fleet in safe and superb working condition. Clearly, to keep the school buses in great condition requires purchasing of new buses now and again.
On October 19, 2013 GEAR UP is taking juniors and seniors to Eastern Washington University for the Think Eastern event. Students will learn about academic programs, meet students, tour the beautiful campus, and learn about financial aid. If you would like to attend, please see the GEAR UP staff. Parents, if you would like to attend with your student, there is a parent track with information specifically for you! Have your student let us know if you would like to attend or give us a call at the high school at 545-8573, ext. 406.
Currently, our state pays local districts to replace buses on a 13 to 18 year schedule. We keep the older buses as spare route buses after they fall off the replacement schedule provided that (1) each spare bus passes the annual WA State Patrol safety inspection, and (2) that its maintenance cost remains reasonable. Last spring the engine in bus #11, a 1993 Blue Bird, had a catastrophic engine failure; bus # 15, a 1993 International, required extensive repairs. Rather than overhauling these older buses, we sold them for scrap. In addition, the second of our two special education buses went off the state replacement schedule. All of this left eight buses on the state replacement schedule. Last spring our school board approved a replacement formula—(9 route buses + 2 extracurricular buses = 11 replacement schedule buses). This flexible formula may change due to enrollment, route and extracurricular needs. After approving the formula, our board backed the purchase of three new buses from a nonvoted $320,000 bond; this bumped our bus fleet to eleven buses and maximized the state depreciation schedule. One of the new buses is a cross-over bus—it can be used as either a regular route bus or a wheelchair equipped special education bus. The delivery of the new buses is expected toward the end of November. We estimate that the replacement dollars from the state will fully fund these new buses. This means that, in addition to replenishing our fleet, this bold board action saves our local taxpayers from approving a locally supported transportation bond. Sincerely, Lou Gates, Superintendent

Start the Day with No Cost Breakfast Studies show that eating a healthy breakfast is linked to improving performance all day, boosting mood, and making academic performance optimal. Breakfast also provides students with the energy necessary to succeed both in and out of the classroom. Because Nutrition Services recognizes the importance of children starting the day with a nutritious breakfast, Columbia School District in partnership with Sodexo, will be offering breakfast to all students at no charge the week of October 7 – 11, 2013 and March 3 – 7, 2014. Make sure your student starts the day right, with a nutritious breakfast. Breakfast is available at your school. Top Ways Breakfast Helps Students: 1. Helps Kids Watch Their Weight Research shows that eating breakfast every day is an effective means for controlling weight. By encouraging kids to make breakfast a habit now can help them lead healthier lives as adults. 2. Promotes an Active and Alert Lifestyle Breakfast presents an ideal opportunity for a child to consume essential nutrients for health, one of which is iron. Iron is an essential component of proteins involved in transporting oxygen throughout the body, thus helping students concentrate in the classroom. 3. Fosters Friendships Without a doubt, a student’s ability to socialize with peers in a school setting plays a significant role in scholastic achievement. Kids who are well-fueled in the morning have more energy to socialize and engage in morning activities. 4. Teaches Life Lessons When kids get an opportunity to assemble and prepare their own breakfast they are learning critical life skills. By teaching kids things like the proper technique for cracking eggs, the importance of properly washing their hands before preparing or eating meals and how to measure ingredients to make dishes, kids are also learning about a broad range of subjects including nutrition, math and science.
Eating Breakfast Makes a Difference!

Freshman Use Learning to Help Needy In an effort to increase their vocabulary and to help change the world, Ms. Griffiths’ 9th graders are committing any “down time” they may have between assignments to working with freerice.com. Students are using the site as a tool for quizzing their vocabulary skills, and for each correct answer, freerice.com will donate 10 grains of rice to someone in need. So far the freshman class has donated 84,440 grains of rice; that’s 844 meals that have been donated to people who would have otherwise gone without had it not been for the commitment of our amazing students! These amazing freshmen deserve a pat on the back for choosing to take the opportunity to “own” their education while simultaneously doing real good for those less fortunate. Ms. Griffiths, Ms. Melton, and Ms. Humphries have been tracking the progress of each English class, and the class that donates the most rice will earn a “rice party,” where they will enjoy rice cakes, rice crispy treats, and rice candies.
