ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ADVID Mission
According to its Statutes, the purposes of ADVID are “the study, experimentation, demonstration and dissemination of winegrowing techniques suited to the specific characteristics of the Demarcated Douro Region, with a view to the competitiveness and quality of the wines in domestic and international markets, on its own initiative or in collaboration with state or private, national or foreign organisations or services and also to represent and defend the interests of members with all official or private organisations of a national, regional or international nature”. Its goals also include organising vocational training, technical support for integrated and organic production and the promotion and protection of the environmental and landscape heritage of the DDR. “The results of the actions and studies undertaken shall be made public, for the Douro winegrowers to have access to them through publications, courses, colloquiums and other methods of dissemination that the Executive Board deems appropriate”.
Vision
To be the main platform for dissemination of knowledge/mapping of problems, between the University and Research Organisations and Wine Companies in the Demarcated Douro Region.
DDR Wine
The activities developed to pursue its Mission in the direction of its Vision were what enabled
Cluster
ADVID to submit an application for COMPETE in 2008, for a coherent series of initiatives integrated into an action plan, subsequently recognised as a Collective Efficiency Strategy, named Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster, and enabled ADVID to be acknowledged as its management entity. The Mission of the Cluster is to foster and consolidate the wine-production sector in the Douro Region, through a technologically sustainable strategy applied to all players. And its Vision is that the sector be environmentally, economically and socially sustainable, supported by a culture of network cooperation to reduce threats and maximise opportunities. The mission of ADVID and the mission of ADVID as the Management Entity of the Cluster merge while the Visions complement each other. The activities carried out throughout 2011 and presented in this Report always took into account this Mission and Vision in the two dimensions of ADVID.

Highlights
In 2011, the highlights of relevance to winegrowing in the Douro included: •
The increase in technical support for members, through the number of visits made (387), the number of tests carried out, agricultural parcel identification system support (88) and photointerpretation work on vineyards of our members subject to agri-environmental applications (132 members/2733 agricultural parcels);
•
Knowledge transfer to DDR winegrowers, through workshops/seminars (16) and training/courses (8);
•
Knowledge production disseminated at meetings and in scientific journals (22);
•
Internationalisation measures: the Association is currently collaborating and

working with the main wine-producing countries, including USA, Australia, Germany, France and Spain;
The collaboration of Prof. Gregory Jones (Southern Oregon University, Oregon, USA), in the study of climate change in the DDR, with both the International Herald Tribune and the New York Times having reported that studies being carried out on climate change in the Douro are at the same level as those on the Champagne, Nappa Valley and Bordeaux regions;
Collaboration with the University of California following ADVID’s participation in the “62nd National Conference of ASEV” (American Society for Enology and Viticulture) in Monterey;
BioDiVine Project with Spain and France;
Establishment of the “Alliance in Steep Slope Vineyards” agreement with the Geisenheim Research Centre;
Presentation of ADVID and PORVID to various Australian entities through participation in the “Vine Collection Meeting, Grape and Wine Research and Development Council” and the “6th Australian Wine Industry Environment Conference” and meetings with Barossa Viticulture Technical Group, Australian Wine Research Institute and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation;
•
Intervention and collaboration with Portuguese wine sector policy decision-makers and other Organisations of significant interest to the sector, namely IVV, IVDP, DRAPN, CCDR-n, CNOIV, IFAP, EMD and ViniPortugal.
In line with the strategy defined for the self-financing and sustainability of ADVID, in 2011 provisions of services (WSET, Ripening Analysis, Tannin Portal, Grapevine Moth Survival after Destemming and Crushing) already represented 8% of the Association’s current operating revenue.
Self-Assessment In 2011, in the Flagship Projects identified on the recognition of the Cluster, we developed competences in the areas of communication and dissemination, we strengthened networking, we were a centre for the collection, incubation and transfer of knowledge from the Scientific and Technology Sectors to wine companies and we improved the Technical Support for Members. We acted as a catalyst for the network that brings together all its members (176) and other partners

Variation in workforce qualification levels
An analysis of the indicators and their targets set out in the Business Plan for 2011 shows that deviations occurred in activities concerning research and development projects essentially due to a lack of new public funding arrangements. There was also a negative variation in the number of

members, with less individual members, but the value generated by fees actually rose, due to the increase in the number of corporate and full members. With regard to the competitiveness of the Economic Aggregate, turnover fell 5.4%, the value of exports having fallen around 1.5%. This demonstrates that it was the internal market that was most strongly affected, undoubtedly influenced by the current economic crisis. However, we noted that “Production units modernised”, measured using the number of farms that submitted applications under PRODER Measure 1.1 “Modernisation and Empowerment of Companies” to the NSRF (SME qualification) and RARRV (vineyard restructuring and conversion scheme), greatly exceeded the targets set, for which reason it is hoped that in the near future these investments, combined with investments made through applications submitted under the Promotion outside the Union and other Promotion measures, will significantly increase the competitiveness of the Douro wine sector. The increase in competitiveness of the wine sector requires all the Organisations involved in the development of the economy of the Douro to be in agreement, to adopt, implement and defend a collective strategy, the objective of which is to increase the value generated by exports of quality wines and to ensure that the Wines of the Demarcated Douro Region can be the Ambassadors and Leader Products among Portuguese wines.

5. RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES – FLAGSHIP PROJECTS 5.1.
Impact of Climate Change on Winegrowing in the Demarcated Douro Region. Management of Water Relations.
The flagship project on the Impact of Climate Change is based on various activities supported by different projects, in particular: Climate Change in the DDR; ClimeVineSafe; Modelling changes in wine quality and Water relations of the grapevine, the 2011 activities of which we will now present in brief. 5.1.1.
Climate change in the DDR
In 2011 this project enjoyed the collaboration of Prof. Gregory Jones from the University of Oregon (SOU) for a series of tasks to support spatial analysis of the climate in the DDR and the preparation of projections of future climate scenarios in the DDR. In this context, the following activities were carried out: •
Meeting for discussion on the strategy with members on 01 March.
•
Collection of reference data for the Douro Region; updating and correction of geo-referenced databases for the DDR; preparation of WorldClim data and analysis of the 31-60 data series.
•
Meetings with members and partners involved in the actions in progress.
•
Development and conclusion of the tasks for which Prof. Gregory Jones (Southern Oregon University, Oregon, USA) was hired, concerning the effects of atmospheric circulation on vine development and regional production; support for the development and calibration of a harvest quality ranking; development of products to improve the spatial resolution of climate data for the region and the development and calibration of a zoning model for regional production variability.
•
Preparation of the climate change scenarios for the DDR in accordance with the models proposed by IPCC 2007, for 2020, 2050 and 2080.
•
Participation in the congress “GCGW - Global Conference on Global Warming” (July, Lisbon), with the presentation of the paper “Impacts of Climate Change on Wine Production: A Global Overview and Regional Assessment in the Douro Valley of Portugal”.
•
Organisation of the Workshop “Climate and grapevine water relations: a case study in the Douro” (25 August) during which preliminary results of the studies that have been developed with Prof. Gregory Jones on predicted climate change and its effect on winegrowing in the region were presented. Researchers from UTAD and members also participated and ADVID presented the following papers: “The role of climate conditions – historic, present and future – on the water relations of the grapevine in the DDR” and “Impact of the water regime on cv touriga nacional: Long-term physiology, yield and quality studies”.
•
Submission of the work presented at the GCGW to the International Journal on Global Warming, after editorial revision by the journal.
•
Application of the methodologies developed for analysis and characterisation of the climate conditions of the Portuguese Controlled Appellations for wine. A study on “Spatial analysis of climate in winegrape

growing regions in Portugal” is being published. An extract from this work has been submitted to the IX Congrès International des Terroirs Vitivinicoles (Dijon/Reims). •
Preparation of the final report for the collaboration project with Prof. Gregory Jones “A Climate Assessment for the Douro Wine Region: An Examination of Past, Present and Future Conditions for Wine Production”.
•
With regard to the provisions of the Business Plan for 2011, no new applications were made on this subject to the PRODER Thematic Network (Action 4.2.2), since no application announcements were issued by PRODER this year. Also with regard to these provisions, the cooperation with INRA for modelling soil water was not implemented, due to changes in the preferences of the MA student selected for the task.

ClimeVineSafe - Short-term climate change mitigation strategies for Mediterranean vineyards
The agreement was signed for the project between UTAD, FCT and Partners. A meeting was held to agree upon the tasks to be carried out in 2011, focusing on support for the preparation of regional climate scenarios and support for the implementation of future field tests.
•
At the same time, support was given to the monitoring of grapevine water stress in the DDR.
•
Preparatory pot trials, solutions to reduce temperature and radiation received on the leaf to maximise photosynthesis processes (Actions dependent on UTAD).
•
Preparation in conjunction with the previous project of simulating climate change scenarios for the DDR.
•
Monitoring of grapevine water stress in the DDR in three locations in the DDR and assessment of impacts on the productive and qualitative response of vines. As a result of these actions, the work “Monitoring vine water status in Douro Region: long-term studies in physiological yield and quality of grapevines” was drawn up and submitted to the IX Congrès International des Terroirs Vitivinicoles (Dijon/Reims).
5.1.3.
Modelling the evolution of wine quality in the DDR
To pursue this objective, the 18th Annual vintage tasting was held on 30 and 31 March and 4 and 6 April 2011, at the School of Biotechnology (ESB), Porto, the first dates being for Douro wines and the second dates for Fortified wines, data collection software having been used. In addition to fortified wines, Douro DOC wines were tasted, although this year only red wines, all the samples having been analysed in advance. The main aim was to establish a framework for visual assessment parameters. As has been the case in previous years, the tasting sessions were organised by category (representative quality, maximum quality and varieties). An average of 19 tasters were present at each session. The usual presentation and discussion of the viticultural year took place at the last session, on 6 April 2011. For validation of climate change effects, and based on the main objectives of ADVID’s annual tastings of vintages, FEUP - Faculty of Engineering of Porto University (Prof. José António Sarsfield Cabral and Prof. José Luís Cabral de

Moura Borges) was asked to set up an annual quality ranking on the wine produced. During 2011, several meetings were held with the FEUP working team, particularly for: •
Support for the development of the benchmark ranking for assessment of the grape harvest quality, with the participation of Prof. Gregory Jones, under his contract for collaboration with ADVID.
•
As a result, the following works were drawn up: “Combining Vintage Charts Ratings into a Consensual Quality Ranking”, presented at the 34th OIV Congress, Porto, Portugal; and “A new method to obtain a consensus ranking of a region’s vintages’ quality” submitted to and accepted for publication by Journal of Wine Economics.
5.1.4.
Water relations of the grapevine
The aim of this project is to understand the effect of different water regimes on the viticultural and oenological behaviour of the Touriga Nacional variety. Launched in 2002, its current points of reference are Quinta dos Aciprestes, Quinta do Noval, as well as Quinta da Canameira and Quinta do Grifo in Douro Superior. The spatial extension of grapevine water status monitoring to the Douro Superior is intended to help ascertain the development bases of a provision of services to members, the intervention capacity of ADVID having been reinforced for this purpose through the acquisition of 2 pressure chambers (Scholander). •
Quinta dos Aciprestes (Soutelo do Douro)
This trial has monitored since 2002 the water status of vines subject to three drip irrigation rates (0%, 30% and 60% of cPET - corrected Potential Evapotranspiration). Base leaf water potential was monitored between June and the end of September. Ripening was monitored through brief analysis and phenolic components and at the harvest the behaviour of production parameters for the different modalities was determined. Management of the water status of the vine requires appropriate monitoring tools. •
Quinta do Noval (Pinhão)
On this trial block, set up in a vineyard laid out in one-row micro patamares, two modalities (0%, 30% of cPET) with three repetitions were also studied. The irrigation period was shorter than in the other trial locations, since the monitoring followed by the base water potential suggested a reduced need for irrigation. •
Quinta da Canameira/Grifo (Barca d’Alva)
In order to study the response of the Touriga Nacional variety, in an environment of greater water stress pressure, new observation blocks were set up in the Douro Superior, to monitor the base water potential, ripening and production.
5.2.
Zoning of viticultural potential in the Demarcated Douro Region
14
ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
•
Preparation and development of contacts and meetings with partners and companies working with remote detection to support zoning processes and precision viticulture.
•
Preparation of maps for spatial analysis of the region, with regard to physiographic parameters for classification of blocks. For this purpose, the material used was that prepared under the project on Climate Change in the DDR, particularly with regard to physiographic characteristics and climate zoning.
•
The GIS (geographic information system) software has been acquired and contacts made with institutional partners and members for the implementation of a webSIG (information transfer platform) to support the management of the qualitative potential of areas under vine.
5.3.
Functional biodiversity in viticulture
The flagship project “Functional Biodiversity in Viticulture” is currently leveraged in three projects supported by different financing sources, namely “Ecological infrastructures in conservation biological control of vineyards pests”, “Enhancing vineyard ecosystem services in companies”, and “BioDiVine Functional demonstration of landscape biodiversity” – their main actions in 2011 will be summarised below. These actions converge on the main objective of promoting continued production sustainability of farming systems and creating value through ecosystem services.
5.3.1.
Ecological infrastructures (EI) in conservation biological control of grapevine pests, in the Demarcated Douro Region.
The aim of this work is to contribute to increasing the functional biodiversity of vines in the Demarcated Douro Region, by setting up a suitable network of ecological infrastructures (EI) with the essential objective of encouraging the activity of natural enemies of crop pests, especially those that act on the grapevine moth. The activities took place in wine estates in the sub-region of Cima Corgo, namely Quinta de São Luís (Sogevinus Vinhos, S.A.), Quinta do Seixo (SOGRAPE Vinhos, S.A.) and Quinta das Carvalhas, Aciprestes, Cidrô, Granja (Real Companhia Velha). Of the tasks envisaged, the following were carried out in 2011: •
Characterisation of the main plant communities present in EI and of their associated arthropod fauna
Completion of a botanical survey in May/June on 6 estates, where vegetation species present within vineyards were identified, as were the ecological infrastructures (EI) located in their proximity. Information was collected on the flowering periods of the main species over the course of the programme and on the associated arthropods. A poster was prepared with the information collected and it was presented at the 9th National Integrated Production Meeting held in Viseu.

•
Evaluating the impact of the presence of EI on grapevine moth parasitoids
In 2011, on the estates referred to above, immature stages of the moth (larvae) were collected in each of the 3 generations and parasitism was monitored in a laboratory. Biological material was collected from eight estates in the DDR, one of which was located in Baixo Corgo (Vallado) and the remaining in Cima Corgo (São Luís, Seixo, Carvalhas, Ventozelo, Cidrô, Granja and Aciprestes).
5.3.2. •
Enhancing vineyard ecosystem services in companies
Project approved in the second half of 2011 by PRODER following the application submitted in 2010 to Measure 4.1 Cooperation for Innovation, in a partnership comprising ADVID, UTAD, Real Companhia Velha and Sogevinus Vinhos S.A.
•
A revision was made of the conditions for approval of the project and working meetings began with the different project participants from the corporate and scientific sectors.
•
In order to take advantage of the agricultural year, samples were implemented for determining the parasitism rates of the main pests and for monitoring microflora in the soil.
•
A paper entitled “Entomopathogenic fungi for the control of vineyard pests in the Demarcated Douro Region” was presented at the 3rd National Colloquium on Organic Horticulture, held in Braga.
•
Effect of cultivation practices on the biodiversity of microorganisms beneficial to vine nutrition and health: Under the project “Enhancing vineyard ecosystem services in the Demarcated Douro Region”, isolations were set up for characterising the diversity of microbes beneficial to the grapevine nutrition and health. Initially, it focused mainly on entomopathogenic fungi, which are natural limiting factors of the grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana), with a view to the selection of strains of biotechnological interest. Among the fungi isolated, based on virulence tests, were the species Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill, Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorokin and Aspergillus flavus Link. The entomopathogenic fungus most frequently isolated from different host insects and the soil was Beauveria bassiana, classified based on its morphological characteristics. To assess the genetic diversity of the species existing in the region, soil

sample surveys were intensified in order to relate the different ways of training soil around vines to the diversity and abundance of entomopathogenic fungi.
5.3.3.
BioDiVine – Demonstrating functional biodiversity in viticulture landscapes
ADVID, in cooperation with 6 partners from 3 European countries (France, Spain and Portugal), is part of the project consortium “BioDiVine - Demonstrating functional biodiversity in viticulture landscapes”, supported by the European Programme LIFE+ (Nature and Biodiversity 2009), which was officially launched in September 2010. In 2011, the following actions were carried out, in brief: •
Conclusion of the first year of assessment of the RBA (Rapid Biology Assessment) method for analysis of arthropods on the basis of the different habitats in the viticulture landscape, as well as a cartographic study of the landscape. The output included the writing and publication of an MA thesis entitled “Comparaison de la valeur en biodiversité de différents habitats du vignoble de l’Alto Douro”.
•
Also in the context of this project, a paper entitled “Monitoring arthropod diversity in Douro wine region vineyards” was written and submitted to the IOBC Conference “Landscape management for functional biodiversity”, to be held in May 2012 in Lleida (Spain).
•
Follow-up and project management meeting in Beaune (Burgundy) and participation in a seminar on sustainability in viticulture in Épernay (Champagne).
•
In 2011, the partners also implemented a technical and administrative reorganisation of the project.
•
Participation in the preparation of landscape biodiversity assessment agreements.
•
Preparation of conservation actions to be implemented in the landscape, for the purpose of demonstrating functional biodiversity.
•
The project’s institutional website was concluded: www.biodivine.eu
5.4.
Preservation of the genetic variation of grapevine varieties
5.4.1.
Preservation of the biodiversity of varieties (Douro, Távora and Varosa, Planalto Mirandês, Chaves and Valpaços)
Following the application submitted to and approved by PRODER, after the project leader’s decision to withdraw from the project, and using its own funds, ADVID outlined actions in order not to affect the national and regional interest of the project. After the structuring of an operating model, with the support of IVDP and DRAPN, in 2011 surveys continued in the Douro, Távora and Varosa, Planalto Mirandês, Chaves and Valpaços areas of varieties in vineyards due to be grubbed up. After defining specifications to support the activities to be carried out, the 2011 survey was concluded and its results can be visualised in the following figure.

•
The paper entitled “Effects of rootstock and environment on Portuguese grape varieties in Douro Region” was submitted to the IX Congrès International des Terroirs Vitivinicoles (Dijon/Reims).
5.5.
Grape quality assessment
Meetings and contacts were held with members and Cluster partners for redefining specifications for the development of this project. This led to a listing of the activities to be developed, choice of representative parameters, application process and dissemination of the technology to be implemented. Development of contacts with entities and companies holding prototypes and equipment at the validation stage and preparation of applications in co-promotion with University of Porto (Faculty of Pharmacy - Associated laboratory REQUIMTE) and companies in the sector. Methodology validation work started.
18
ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
As part of the preparatory actions for the project, Cluster members submitted the following applications to Vale IDT (16SI2011), with the cooperation of ADVID, the University of Porto and members: •
“XLWINES - Maximising use of the oenological potential of grapes for the production of outstanding wines”
•
“VinusSanus - boosting the antioxidant capacity of red wine”
5.5.1.
Non-destructive analysis of grape berries – Touriga Franca (Vine – PAT)
Continuing the work carried out in this area, on 29 August 2011 tests were made on around 200 vines, corresponding to an area of 1 ha of vineyards, using spectrum radiometry with the Vine-PAT equipment, developed by the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP) - School of Biotechnology (ESB) and University of Minho (UMinho), Profs César Ferreira and Rui Martins, respectively. This used a vinha ao alto (vertical row vine) block of the Touriga Nacional variety in Quinta dos Aciprestes that has been studied in the context of the hydrological control of the vine. The methodology used is based on UV-VISSWNIR spectroscopy techniques (Vine-PAT) to obtain high quality images of the grape metabolism and to associate principles of precision viticulture, with potential for non-invasive ripening tests for the most of the parameters traditionally tested in laboratories.
5.6. •
Sustainable production in viticulture
Development of the ADVID + Vinideas publicity action plan and collaboration of UTAD, within the scope of the Thematic Information and Dissemination Network supported by PRODER.
•
Provision by ADVID of materials for the VINIDEAS platform and extensive dissemination of activities in the field of sustainable production in viticulture.
•
Setting up of reference blocks in accordance with the model prepared by ADVID, following a structuring of blocks by usage level in accordance with the implementation model discussed with participating members, based on information collected.
•
Collection and processing of information to support research and experimentation activities, as well as support for decision-taking by winegrowers concerning strategies for phytosanitary protection of the grapevine, soil conservation and maintenance of the plant canopy.
5.6.1.
Evolution of downy and powdery mildew in the growth cycle
Based on observations on members’ blocks, downy mildew and powdery mildew were monitored, to support the writing of viticultural year Circulars and to support decision-taking by the ADVID technical team. In 2011, downy mildew was particularly aggressive, due to the development conditions it encountered. Also for powdery mildew conditions were very favourable, and alongside downy mildew required increased advice for members, through

strategy guideline circulars and through technicians fine-tuning the best solutions in the field. Support for the management of these diseases was still complemented by workshops.
5.6.2.
Collection, processing and dissemination of climate information
ADVID operates a network of automated climate stations (ADCON Telemetry), comprising 6 units installed by ADVID and in cooperation with members, located in Régua, Adorigo, Pinhão, Tua, Vesúvio and Vilariça, at elevations of up to 180 m close to the River Douro, providing monitoring of changes in climate conditions throughout the Demarcated Douro Region. The information collected supports ADVID’s experimentation activity and, after being processed, is sent to members each week during the growth cycle, to support decision-taking concerning phytosanitary treatments and ripening assessment. Since 2006, evapotranspiration information has also been available for three locations, to help prepare water balances. In 2011 a new model for the presentation of climate data was introduced and the rate of circulation of weekly data during the growth cycle was increased, particularly extreme occurrences. 12 monthly bulletins were issued and 32 information notes on climate developments during the growth cycle stage.
5.7. •
Rationalisation of hillside vineyards
Structuring and submission to SIAC of the application for the “Rationalisation of hillside vineyards – Mapping mass wasting” project, the main objective of which is the preparation of support maps for the identification of risks and to support investment decisions by companies. The definition of the business plan for this topic envisaged a PRODER application (Cooperation for Innovation), that was not implemented due to a lack of new public funding arrangements launched by PRODER in 2011. However, following contacts with COMPETE (Ministry for Economic Affairs), the possibility was studied of part of the actions provided falling within the scope of the collective actions support systems (SIAC), for the preparation of maps to support erosion management.
•
The paper entitled “Efficiency of steep slope vineyards: Functional Analysis applied to mechanization in Douro Region” was submitted for presentation at the 1st International Workshop on Vineyard Mechanization and Grape and Wine Quality, to be held in Piacenza, Italy.
•
The workshop “Rationalisation of Hillside Vineyards” organised in December to involve the network of members and to raise awareness of the project in progress, with the participation of various researchers specialised in winegrowing soil erosion processes.
•
Information on the project topic was also compiled and processed.

5.8.2 Institutional empowerment network for the promotion of employability in the Douro Under the “Institutional Empowerment Network for the Promotion of Employability – Douro” application
22
ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
submitted to the Measure “Promotion and Institutional Empowerment – Institutional Networks 2010 – Area V**”, endorsed by all the participants in the Douro Employment and Employability Pact, with DREN and IEFP as direct promoters, two workshops were held: 17-03-2011 - Mobilisation workshop, held in Régua, for consultation of the wine sector on the skills the sector seeks in the labour market. 31-05-2011 - Workshop to launch Business Barometers in Lamego, entitled “Share the Path Travelled, the Path to be Travelled and Launch the Business Barometer”. In this case we also participated with an oral presentation entitled “Labour market needs” (preliminary data from questionnaires administered in the wine/retail/tourism sectors).
This project is intended to promote employability in the Douro region through a better adjustment between the qualifications and skills offered by the education and training system and the needs and opportunities of the labour market, through careers guidance for young people and through increased awareness of the assets.
6. FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ACTION PLAN During 2011 we were confronted with constraints of various types on the development of the action plan, related to financing by COMPETE (FEDER) and PRODER (FEADER) and to conflicts of interest with the FEDER/FEADER Agreement and Universities/Industry.
These constraints had an impact on the implementation of the action plan, particularly with regard to the Flagship Projects. The difficulties in ensuring that the actions match the framework of the PRODER programme and its coordination with FEADER required approaches to uncompleted projects to be redesigned.
1. To achieve the objectives of the “Impact of Climate Change” project, three lines of action were defined, one of which is still at the funding stage, while the others are being executed with exclusive funding from ADVID and partially by the SIAC project.
2. For the “Zoning of Winegrowing Potential in the Demarcated Douro Region” project, an action has been defined for an application under PRODER, however there are no predictions for when this will take place.
3. Functional Biodiversity in Viticulture. 3 actions were identified to achieve the aims of the Flagship Project, all of which are in progress; one with funding from LIFE+, and the project of greater economic value, “Enhancing vineyard ecosystem services in companies”, has been approved in the 2nd half of 2011.

4. Preservation of the Biodiversity of Grapevine Varieties. An action was defined, in partnership with IVDP, PORVID, DRAPN and ADVID, which was submitted to and was approved by PRODER, Funding Application 18,661, action 2.3.1., Conservation and Improvement of Genetic Resources, with DRAPN as its Promoter. Only Public Entities can promote this type of action. The whole financial process involves the Public promoter, and it is difficult to operationalise due to all the accounting/financial/administrative restrictions to which Public Administration is subject. During the application and analysis stage, after meetings with the Financial Services of DRAPN, we notified the Management Authority (by e-mail and letter) of the accounting restrictions and the solution for the case, which is to sign contracts with each partner, to no avail. After approval of the AP, DRAPN withdrew due to accounting difficulties/impossibilities, which led to its cancellation by PRODER. The project was launched and the survey of vines in the Demarcated Douro Region has begun in partnership with IVDP, funded by ADVID and IVDP.
5. Grape Quality Assessment. We envisage submitting this to SI IDT and/or SIAC, depending on reformulation of the methodologies to be used in cooperation with companies and the University of Porto.
6. Sustainable Production in Viticulture. An action was defined and approved under Proder Action 4.2.2- Thematic Networks for Information and Dissemination, Funding Application 14,368 and is being implemented.
7. Rationalisation of Hillside Vineyard Layouts. An application was made to SIAC for part of the project.
8. Skills Development – Training and Dissemination. 3 actions were defined - “Continuous Assessment of the Technological State of the Art of the Wine Sector in the Demarcated Douro Region”, applying for financing under ON2 in Feb. 2011, awaiting decision; “Certified Modular Training”, which was implemented and financed by POPH, the final accounts of which are currently being closed; “Institutional Empowerment Network for the Promotion of Employability – Douro” which is in progress and is being funded by ON2. Table 2 presents a progress report for the flagship projects.

ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
Hillside stability is also strongly dependent on climate factors and in a situation of climate change, with an increase in extreme phenomena, it is essential to help rationalise hillside vineyards, in order to reduce the effects of extreme weather, as in the incidents of 2001 and 2010. For this reason, this workshop was held under the “Rationalisation of Hillside Vineyards” flagship project, focusing on studies of specific cases in the Douro Region and analysis of practical situations to encourage debate.

7.3.4. ADVID website - www.advid.pt Following the new procedures and methodologies implemented in 2010 for updating and entering new content on the ADVID website, in 2011 we continued to improve communication with ADVID members, with partners and with an external audience, which was again reflected in an increase in the number of visits to the institutional site, which rose to around 23 000.
8. SUPPORT SERVICES FOR GOOD FARMING PRACTICES BY OPERATORS IN THE DDR 8.1 Management of agri-environmental activities 8.1.1. Technical support for integrated vine production In the context of the development of the Integrated Production and Protection programme, ADVID monitored members’ blocks, collecting information and providing the training necessary for correct application of these Production and Protection methods, supplementing this with the publication of Technical Bulletins, Circulars to accompany the vine growth cycle and the development of diseases and pests, and training. Lists of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides approved in Integrated Protection were also drawn up, with the corresponding technical standards for the use of the various active substances. As the reinforcement of its capacity to provide technical support and to prepare technical documentation to support its activities was a serious objective for ADVID in 2011, we have summarised in the following figures the actions of the main technical support groups.

8.1.2. Photointerpretation services - Agricultural Parcel Identification System In 2011 the IFAP developed an action plan for the Agricultural Parcel Identification System, in order for it to be recognised by the European Community as reliable to ensure that all parcels and their land uses are correctly delimited in the Agricultural Parcel Identification System (application of the community’s rules to all those covered by applications), and also limit any penalties incurred by winegrowers.
46
ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
Thus, all the Agricultural parcels covered by applications under PU2011 were photointerpreted by the confederation services and in turn distributed by the associations in accordance with their catchment area. The criteria for definition of a (base) parcel having been changed, this process led to a reorganisation of the parcel identification system immediately after photointerpretation which will in turn lead to changes in the iE and in MAA (agri-environmental measures) application parcels. The main objective is to ensure that MAA commitments are guaranteed without any penalties. In October, November and December, ADVID technical staff undertook photointerpretation of around 2375 parcels, which took up a great deal of extra working time not envisaged in the Business Plan.
8.1.3. Support for the preparation of applications for Agri-environmental Measures With regard to applications for agri-Environmental measures, the ADVID technical services submitted 137 single applications concerning 180 production units, with a total of 5,856 ha of vineyards applying under Integrated Production and 279 ha under Organic Production, 8,102 sub-blocks having been processed. In addition to these measures, applications were also made for RPU (Single Payment Schemes), MZDs (Continuation of Farming in LessFavoured Areas), ITI-DV (Integrated Territorial Intervention in the Douro Wine Region), Support for Quality Schemes and other measures of less importance in our area of intervention. ADVID also drew up and distributed supporting information on legislation (10 Information Bulletins), provided support for administrative questions raised by IFAP and monitored certification of the measures, through support for the preparation of field documents, technical support and the compilation of technical documents. The following figures present a statistical summary of the files prepared and the potential for channelling aid to members in 2011, around €1.5 million (values estimated on the basis of applications, without considering subsequent adjustments in areas).

8.2.
Other Viticulture Services 8.2.1. Support for Organic Production
In order to launch a system of sustained support for Organic Production in viticulture, in 2011 ADVID strengthened its competences through training and certification on this subject for a member of its technical staff, as well as the compilation and processing of information to support this activity.
8.2.2. Application of base water potential for assessment of irrigation needs In order to promote a service to be offered to members, for management of water relations of the grapevine, using assessment of base water potential, monitoring of the water status of the vine was extended to the Douro Superior area, with the aim of calculating methodological bases for developing services for members. During the preparation of these services, ADVID’s intervention capacity was reinforced by the acquisition of 2 pressure chambers (Scholander).
8.2.3. Potential yield prediction using the pollen method The aim of this project, which started in 1992 and has support from the IVDP, with laboratory and statistical analysis by the Faculty of Sciences at UP, is the application of a methodology for rapid harvest prediction based on analysis of the atmospheric pollen count, observed in three locations in the Region. The 2011 pollen capture took place between 6 May and 7 June, with filters being replaced twice weekly. In the Douro Superior, due to a change in the sampling location, the pollen capture only started on 17 May.
48
ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
The application of the model, after inclusion of the climate data and of qualitative information on phytosanitary pressure, presented for 2011 a yield potential with a clear downward trend compared with 2010. Thus the prediction interval is between 218 and 264 thousand barrels of must, representing a significant reduction (around 25-30%) compared with the yield potential predicted in 2010. The provisional IVDP data, resulting from production declarations, point to a reduction of around 23% in 2011.
8.2.4. Assessment of variety and rootstock behaviour In this activity, data on the ripening and harvest characteristics of the scion/rootstock affinity block planted on Quinta da Cavadinha was monitored and collected. Information available in the DDR on varieties was also collected and processed, with special focus on phenological information to support the study of phenological relationships and their thermal requirements, to help draw up phenological maps to support viticultural management. •
The results were published in “Effects of the rootstocks and environment on behaviour of the cv Tinta Roriz in Douro Wine Region”; a study was also prepared based on the trials at Quinta da Cavadinha entitled “Effects of rootstock and environment on Portuguese Grape varieties in Douro Region” submitted to the IX Congrès International des Terroirs Vitivinicoles (Dijon/Reims – to be presented in 2012).
8.2.5. Control of the grapevine moth using the mating disruption method Protection against the grapevine moth using the mating disruption (MD) method has been studied by ADVID since 2000. Knowledge acquired over the course of a decade ensured the identification of strong points where its effectiveness can be maximised, as well as some restrictions that limit its use. In addition to the diffusion of knowledge acquired (through Technical Note No. 4 and the 2 colloquiums held), members with greater interest in the application of more sustainable means of protection against the grapevine moth asked ADVID for specialised support in this context, particularly in programming the application of dispensers in the field, in the training of technical personnel and agricultural workers of the company and other employees involved and in evaluation of the effectiveness of this means of control during the campaign, through monitoring of the moth damage both in locations subject to MD and in reference blocks (without MD). For this reason in 2011, following on from previous years, ADVID accompanied and provided specialised technical support to certain properties using this form of moth control. The effectiveness of this method was evaluated by comparison of both the captures obtained in pheromone traps placed within the MD area and captures in a trap placed in a control area without dispensers, and damage occurring in both locations. The results obtained were the subject of extensive publicity at the workshops held, in specialised publications and in reviews of the viticultural year.
49
ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
8.2.6. Study of the resistance of grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana) to the destemming and crushing process In connection with the study Monitoring and Control of European Grapevine Moth, Lobesia botrana (2011-2012) underway in California under the orientation of Lucia Varela (UCCA Sonoma) and following the participation of ADVID in the 62nd ASEV (California-USA), where the strategies followed by ADVID to control the moth were presented, a collaboration was set up through the aforementioned study on the resistance of the grapevine moth to destemming and crushing. Measures for prevention and eradication of the pest in the USA require areas where the pest has been identified to be subject to obligatory control measures, which means the levels of presence are not sufficient for a study of this type. For this reason, ADVID in collaboration with the University of California has conducted research by way of provision of services in order to determine whether the moth would survive destemming and crushing processes, which was indeed confirmed, in the conditions in which the study was carried out.
8.2.7. Assessment of the effectiveness of treatments against grapevine powdery mildew during early stages of the growth cycle. A trial was monitored on a block situated in Cima Corgo planted with Tinta Roriz, which is highly sensitive to this disease. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of treatments starting at an earlier stage in the growth cycle. The positioning of the treatments was between budbreak and pre-flowering, at a 14-day rate, to control any primary infections at a stage of low efficiency of powdered sulphur due to low temperatures. Four groups were set up: 1 - Control; 2 - Application of 3 treatments with wettable sulphur before pre-flowering; 3 Start of treatments at the “unfolded leaves” stage and another treatment during pre-flowering; 4 - Just one treatment at pre-flowering with an EBI. At the grape harvest, an assessment was made of the frequency of attack by recording incidence and severity in bunches. On the same block, an assessment was made of the evolution of the diseases of greatest importance in the region, this work being used to define the best positioning of treatments in accordance with meteorological data records. •
Also on this subject and for the purposes of disseminating results, a study entitled “Evaluation of the efficacy of first fungicide application on the control of Erysiphe necator and the ascospores release on Douro Region” was drawn up and submitted to the IOBC/WPRS Working Group “Integrated Protection and Production in Viticulture”, in Lacanau, Bordeaux. Partial results were also presented at workshops on the viticultural year.
8.3.
Oenology
8.3.1.
Ripening control
In addition to the immediate objective of providing members with ripening data on their own blocks, this initiative
50
ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
also has a general aim of creating a database on the behaviour of the main varieties in the different sub-regions of the Douro. Members participating in this initiative were provided with customised reports on the behaviour of their blocks, with regard to routine tests: Weight (g); Volume of liquid (mL); Potential alcohol (%); Total Acidity (mg/L Tartaric Acid) and pH; and Phenolic ripening: Total anthocyanins; Extractable anthocyanins; Total polyphenols (TP); Anthocyanin extractability - AE (%) and Tannin maturation - TM (%). In 2011, 21 members and 2 non-members subscribed to this service, registering for the testing of ripening assessment on nearly 240 vineyard blocks, which took place between 19 July and 23 September 2011, 851 tests having been carried out. In addition, 148 ripening tests were carried out in ADVID trials, totalling 999 routine and phenolic tests processed in the laboratory. Also in the field of ripening control services, in the context of the Annual Review of the Viticultural Year, a summary of the ripening of the reference varieties (Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca) was drawn up. The ripening report for the DDR was not drawn up.
8.3.2.
Tannin Portal (ADVID/AWRI)
The importance of knowledge of tannins in oenology, due to their influence on colour stability, on ageing of wines, on oxidation phenomena and on characteristics such as astringency, led ADVID to launch in July 2011, following contacts made with AWRI (Australian Wine Research Institute - a prestigious research institute with more than 50 years experience in wine science and industry), a tannin analysis service in partnership with AWRI, offering the analyses at a competitive price. In 2011, 4 members subscribed to this service, and around 500 analyses were made of samples received.
9. INSTITUTIONAL RELATIONS In order to strengthen ties and encourage new partnerships with the Cluster, attract new members, monitor and participate in the definition of wine sector policies and promote the Douro Region Wine Cluster network, ADVID developed a series of initiatives in 2011 including: 9.1. Geisenheim Research Centre in Germany From 1 to 3 March, a team comprising José Manso, António Graça, Rosa Amador and Fernando Alves were received in Geisenheim by Prof. Hans Schultz and his team and entered into a partnership agreement, “Alliance in Steep Slope Vineyards”, signed in Geisenheim.

Photos 19 and 20 – ADVID Mission in Geisenheim.
The group presented an overview of ADVID, the Cluster, the work in progress and its concerns shared with German viticulture, particularly “Climate Change”, “Water Regime”, “The Sustainability of Hillside Viticulture”, “Assessment of grape potential”, “Functional Biodiversity” and “Preservation of genetic variability”. Prof. Schultz presented an overview of the organisational structure of GSHM – Forschungsanstalt and the Centre’s functional connections. Marco Hofmann, Beate Berkelmann-Löhnertz, Marco Pfliehinger, Max Freund, Bernd Gruber, Manfred Stoll, Rainer Keicher, Helmut Dietrich, Manfred Großmann, Claus Patz, Klaus Eimert, Joachim Schmid and Oliver Bitz presented the projects in which they are involved: •
Climate Change - Model and Application Development (Marco Hofmann): Regional climate models are used to estimate future climate change scenarios and their influence on total evapotranspiration, through modelling of TTSW and FTSW, respectively (total transpirable soil water and fraction of transpirable soil water). This way water availability is modelled based on regional models, offering among other outputs, the number of days with water stress per year and application of the water availability map for management of soil coverage and risk analysis for different forms of grass cover.
•
Climate Change – past, present and anticipation of problems caused by pests and diseases (Beate Berkelmann-Löhnertz): Models are being developed for downy mildew and botrytis, to anticipate effects of climate change and assessment of equipment with increasingly efficient application of pesticides. In terms of development of the predictive model for downy mildew, particularly important is the use of a methodology to measure the splash effect (splash-meter), using a two-level information gathering device, for incorporation of information into the model algorithm. On botrytis, particularly notable is a study of the phenotypical characterisation of in vitro and in situ strains, to assess virulence in the bunch and resistance to pesticides.
•
Interaction of water, nitrogen and UV radiation (Marco Pfliehinger): These studies seek to relate the interaction between water stress, nitrogen in must and UV radiation with the aroma of the varieties studied. To this end, a test was set up using 240 L containers, controlled water intake and variation in UV radiation, through the use of UV lamps and the application of UV filters, for different exposure times /protection times.
52
ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
•
Sustainability of the Winery – Carbon footprint and water control (Max Freund): Assessment of carbon footprints in wineries, through the Amethyst Project (www.amethyst-project.eu). Based on ISO 14000, FF 16000, PAS 2050, IPCC, WCBSD and OIV, it has been applied in Germany as a basis for estimating carbon footprints in the wine industry. The project has been applied at 200 wineries.
•
Efficient water use. Irrigation control (Bernd Gruber): Use of low frequency irrigation strategies and organisation of irrigation intervals in large-scale trials. Use of different types of sensors to support water monitoring, in particular: micrometric stem/trunk variation; leaf thickness, sap flow and water stress.
•
Remote sensing in the monitoring of Stress (Manfred Stoll): Difficulty in accurate assessment of types of stress occurring at a given moment. Work is being carried out using thermography, spectral reflectance, fluorescence, infrared thermography camera and remote satellite and airborne detection. Comparison of infrared based methods and gas exchange methods. Possibility of use in non-invasive bunch measurements, using Multiplex Force A (www.force-a.eu/an/qualite_raisin.html) for grape quality assessment.
•
Mechanisation of Hillside Vineyards. (Rainer Keicher): Demonstration of the types of mechanisation applied on hillside vineyards in the Rheingau. Reference to work by Schneider 2007 (on working time based on the vineyard type and mechanisation model used), with substantial variations from 300-400 h/ha in the model with the best performance to 3000 h/ha in hillside vineyards, without mechanisation. Prototypes under development were presented, with field tests already carried out for unmanned machinery, driven by radio remote control with GPS support, for treatment and herbicide application tasks.
•
Assessment of grape potential (Helmut Dietrich/Manfred Großmann/Manfred Stoll/Claus Patz): The use of Accent (Bruker) equipment in the microbiology department was mentioned. Reference to technologies for assessment of micro-organisms in wine: microscope; fluorescence scanner; FT-IR and molecular biology. Reference to technologies for assessing the qualitative potential of the grape: photometry, HPLC, GC-MS, GC-GC-MS. ADVID ▪ Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster ▪ Annual Report 2011
ADVID presented a series of topics to be worked on by Geisenheim students who are interested in traineeships in the Douro oriented by the team from that Centre: •
Water relations
•
Grapevine trunk diseases
•
Rationalisation of hillside vineyards
9.2. Collaboration with University of California Cristina Carlos represented ADVID at the 62nd National Conference of ASEV – American Society for Enology and Viticulture, in Monterey, California, where she presented a paper entitled “New approaches for management of European Grapevine Moth, Lobesia Botrana, in the Douro Wine Region”. The contacts made resulted in a provision of services, related to the study of “Monitoring Control of the European Grapevine Moth, Lobesia Botrana” in progress in California, which consisted of verifying whether the moth survived the destemming and crushing process carried out in the 2011 grape harvest.
9.3. South Australian Wine Industry Association Incorporated - Australia At the invitation of South Australian Wine Industry Association Incorporated, the ADVID Board Member, António Graça, visited Australia from 18 to 24 October where he attended the “Vine Collection Meeting, Grape and Wine Research and Development Council (GWRDC)”, the “6th Australian Wine Industry Environment Conference,” at Adelaide Showgrounds, had meetings and visits with the Barossa Viticulture Technical Group and also meetings with the Australian Wine Research Institute and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. As a result of this mission, besides the contacts made, the publicity for ADVID and PORVID, for their objectives and projects, for the wealth of varieties in Portugal and work on preservation of these varieties, an important aspect of the visit was the invitation made by Peter Hayes for PORVID to attend the meeting of the Vinelink association in Paris in 2012 and the suggestion that Rob Bramley, the greatest Australian specialist in precision viticulture, could come to work on the Zoning project in the DDR in collaboration with ADVID.
9.4. Lincoln University – New Zealand Through the contact established between Cristina Carlos and Lincoln University, a partnership agreement was set up with Lincoln University in New Zealand and in May 2012 we will be visited by Stephen Wratten, Professor of Ecology, mentor and head of the Greening Waipara programme in progress in Waipara Valley in New Zealand, http://bioprotection.org.nz/greening-waipara.

9.5. National Institutions Several meetings were held with Institutions of significance to the wine sector, namely the Office of the State Secretary for Rural Development, IVV, IVDP, AEVP, members, partners and regional coordination institutions, DRAPN, CCDR-n and EMD, among others.
State Secretary for Forests and Rural Development – ADVID, through its Chairman José Manso and General Director Rosa Amador met with the State Secretary for Forests and Rural Development and his Head of Cabinet at his office in Lisbon. The main aim of this meeting was to make a positive contribution to solving the problem of “Preservation of the Biodiversity of Grapevine Varieties” to be financed by PRODER under Action 2.3.1 – Conservation and Improvement of Genetic Resources, considering that at the present, all Portuguese regions have financing for vine surveys with the exception of north Portugal.
IVV – Within the framework of the Consultative Council of IVV, of which ADVID is a member through FEVIPOR, we attended two meetings. The issues debated at these two meeting included “Proposal for the Amendment to Ministerial Order 428/2000, of 17 June, which establishes the list of varieties suited to wine production in Portugal”, submitted by IVV and to which ADVID expressed its disagreement, on the following grounds: “ADVID disagrees with the basic principles underlying this draft Ministerial Order, for which reason it cannot agree with this draft. Considering that synonyms derive from the regional use of names for the same variety, the provisions of the draft Ministerial Order require precedence be given to one synonym (and the wines of that region) over the remaining synonyms. The underlying principles reflect an unacceptable discrimination of Regions, of their identity and of their history, for which reason we cannot agree in any way with this draft Ministerial Order”. This matter has not been closed in 2011 and will continue to be discussed in 2012.
IVDP – There was mutual collaboration with this Institution throughout 2011, particularly through the use of the Solar da Régua Auditorium for dissemination and knowledge transfer events promoted by ADVID, the Ampelography Course, the WSET Course, the “The preservation of genetic vine resources” project, specifically the surveying, identification and collection of clones and varieties in the Demarcated Douro Region. We also monitored, with this Institution, the SUVIDUR Project – Sustainability of Hillside Viticulture in the Douro and Duero Regions”. For us to develop the Zoning Project and for there to be a possibility of developing an access and validation platform for the IVDP Cadastre, we organised meetings between IVDP, Members and ESRI, a pilot scheme having been set up between IVDP and the ADVID Member with a vineyard block survey carried out in accordance with IVDP block criteria, which will take place over the course of 2012.
DRAPN – There was also close collaboration with this Institution, particularly with the Ampelography course which has been held at Quinta de Santa Bárbara and with which DRAPN collaborates in the teaching of practical classes.

Joint efforts were also made for the surveying and identification of varieties and clones in the Planalto Mirandês, Valpaços and Chaves regions which, for reasons unrelated to the Institutions, were not achieved in 2011. Also significant was the contribution to the “Tinta Roriz” seminar, as well as information sessions held with our members in the context of ITI Douro Vinhateiro. Mention should also be made of the collaboration in the “Wood Diseases” workshop and the provision of phenological data as well as the provision and validation of meteorological data.
CCDRN – ADVID was part of the Economy and Industry, Environment and Natural Heritage, and Culture and Tourism working groups, which seek to define strategies for the development of the Macro-Region of Southwest Europe. In the framework of the “Promote Cohesion, Decentralise the State, Develop the Regions” initiative, organised by CCDRN, ADVID participated in the seminar “Regionalisation & Constitutional Revision: what Prospects”. It also had meetings with the Director of this Institution in February and September to present a progress report and any restrictions on the development of the Douro Region Wine Cluster. Centres and Clusters – We participated in 4 meetings of Centres and Clusters to analyse and debate expectations and future challenges, one of these meetings having been held at COTEC.
COMPETE – Two situation reports were provided dated 30 June and 31 December. A paper was presented at the Forum “Competitiveness and Internationalisation – Competitiveness Centres and Clusters”, in which we presented our weak points, constraints, strong points, and proposals for improvement for future CES (Collective Efficiency Strategies). We also had 4 meetings with Compete, at its premises in Lisbon, two on an individual level to ask questions about the continuity of the CES, about constraints that affect the Douro Wine Cluster and about the implementation of SIAC. The other two meetings, which were in conjunction with other Centres and Clusters, were firstly to reinforce the internal powers of management entities to support the target economic aggregate in the preparation of SI I&DT applications and secondly to prepare the Dissemination Action “Competitiveness and Internationalisation – Competitiveness Centres and Clusters” held on 20 December in Porto.
PRODER – There were no meetings with this Institution, since no measures were launched that could finance Cluster projects. There were contacts to settle payment orders related to projects in progress and we also challenged the aid awarded for approval of the Funding Application “Enhancing Vineyard Ecosystem Services”, PRODER having met our requests.
IFAP – Contacts with this Institution concerned those associated with the projects funded by PRODER in progress and also the request for a Meeting with the Head of the Rural Development Aid Unit, to attempt to clarify a series of applications by our members to Agri-Environmental Measures dating from 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 20011 and understand the reasons for the differences between the amounts envisaged and those actually

paid. This meeting will take place in May 2012. In connection with the photointerpretation developed by ADVID, we also raised several questions with IFAP, particularly on the concept of the vineyard block in hillside viticulture. Although we do not know about the specific cause and effect, our document was sent in September and in October IFAP altered various concepts, namely the width of taludes.
PORVID – ADVID is a founder and member of the Board of PORVID (Portuguese Association for Grapevine Diversity), being represented by António Graça. In addition to the activities associated with this position, we were also in Australia at the invitation of South Australian Wine Industry Association Incorporated, where we presented PORVID, its objectives and current projects. We also attended a national meeting organised by this Association, held in Pegões, at which Paulo Costa was also present.
CNOIV – Though its Technical Director, Fernando Alves, ADVID participated in the OIV meetings in March and October in Paris, representing Portugal in the ad hoc group “Carbon Dioxide Balance”. In Portugal, we attended the three meetings of the General Council of CNOIV, as well as the extraordinary meeting to debate support for the OIV 2012 Congress held in Porto.
“Um Porto para o Mundo” Association – We joined this association to support the organisation of the OIV Congress in Porto, particularly during technical visits to the Demarcated Douro Region. We attended the two General Meetings held in 2011.
CITAB – We participated through the Board Member António Graça in the Consultative Council of Stakeholders and in the Eco integrity research group through Cristina Carlos.
We also attended the General Meeting of Viniportugal, through FEVIPOR (an association of which we are members of the Board) in which the current Chairman, Jorge Monteiro, took office.
We also attended the Regional Councils of Casa do Douro through our Chairman José Manso and the Consultative Council of the Douro Mission Structure through our General Director Rosa Amador.
In the year 2010 we cancelled our membership of ADH – Historic Douro Association.
9.6. Demo ADVID Initiative To attract new full members, on 17 February a DEMO action was provided at Poças Júnior, which resulted in the new Full Member, “Sociedade Vinícola Terras de Valdigem, S.A”. At the General Meetings of April and November 2011 the following members were admitted:
